Perched on a bluff at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, Grandma’s Beach Cottage offers unobstructed white water views that cannot be improved upon. She sure knew how to pick em’ - this house could not be better placed! It is located inside the private gated entrance to Irish Beach’s exclusive beach access and looks right down the beach to the western most point of the lower 48 – the Point Arena Lighthouse. Grandma was very unpretentious and so is her house; she built the first home in Irish Beach with 3 bedrooms, 1 full bathroom, constructed of solid core redwood (no paneling here!) with lots of windows to soak up the view and a fully equipped kitchen. Grandma didn’t want us kids sitting around a TV when there was exploring to be done outside, nor was she going to be inside doing laundry. You will not find a TV or laundry facility in this house! She didn’t really know how to use a computer, but yes our house is equipped with wifi. I think Grandma must have been a romantic, because her house sure puts you in the mood. With a glass of wine in front of the fire and the constant sound of the crashing waves, honey by my side, well... I just can’t think of anything better! If you love long walks on the beach, and natures wondrous scenery I think you too will love Grandma’s Beach Cottage.

My fondest childhood memories were created at Grandma's beach cottage at Irish Beach where imagination and creativity are allowed to run wild.
My parents built this house when I was a young child and there was not another house in sight. I am so grateful to my mother for leaving this very special beach cottage for our family to continue to enjoy for years to come. We invite you to share our piece of paradise.
Inspiration, healing & rejuvenation, complete relaxation, connection to mother earth just for starters. Easy access to the beach cannot be overstated, why drive when you can walk?
One of the best vacation spot I have ever been. The location is beautiful, the view from the cottage is amazing, the property is neat and lean, ample space for a family, comfy beds, fully equipped kitchen and a semi-private beach, I couldn't ask for more. There is a nice restaurant and an all-in-one store pretty close by, also we visited the state park and the lighthouse, all within 10-15 minutes driving distance from the property. But what we enjoyed the most was relaxing in the living room, and seeing and hearing the waves tirelessly crashing in the shore. I'll definitely visit again, and will recommend to anyone looking for a nice relaxing vacation.
Well, I lived in Manchester back in the early 70's as a kid and have been coming to Mendo, and specifically Irish Beach for years. I had the pleasure of introducing my Florida gal pal (Ladies Long Weekend) to my favorite place - the Mendo Coast. Jennifer, our host, was AMAZING as we had to coordinate dates, flights, etc. What a fantastic host - always right there with our questions, etc.
We arrived, and it was winter, but as I shared with my friend, new to Nor Cal Coast: Winter storms or Sunshine - ya can't beat a cottage with a fireplace on the bluff in Irish Beach.
The view, proximity to the beach, the very comfortable beds (2 of the 3 bedrooms have glorious ocean views), the living room (glass and views!) and wrap around deck - again - best views! The mighty Pacific there to lull you and entertain you (waves crashing against the rocks off the private beach? The BEST!). Hours spent just watching that ocean, and chatting away, which was what we wanted: Relaxation and amazing connection to the Pacific Ocean.
The deck in GREAT as, no matter the weather, you can always find a place that is a sanctuary if stormy (for winter visitors) - and nothing wrong with a storm - very exciting.
Coming in winter means lush, green landscapes, sweater/fleece weather, but nothing to hold you back.
We also had beautiful sunset, clear view of Pt. Arena Lighthouse - (very special), clear night with the best stars, and an almost full moon rise.
So close to everything I wanted to show my friend; from Pt. Arena up to quaint Mendocino town...we really wished we had booked more days.
Went horseback riding via Ross Family Ranch, and that took us right to our beach:)
The house is very livable, comfy and welcoming and well appointed (great kitchen - we cooked!). Yes, you have to bring a few things (your own towels, sheets) and do a little cleaning - but to keep the price economical, so worth it!
What can I say - We'll be back, and I've been busy sharing with my friends this treasure as if you want to be in Mendo, ya gotta be on the Bluff...be on the Beach:)
Thanks for all you helpfulness, Jennifer, in making my return trip so great, and introducing Judy to how AMAZING the Mendo Coast is - VERY special! And thank you, Grandma - we could feel your love and the years of happiness in this sweet home.
We just spent part of our vacation at this wonderful house. This was one of the most amazing places I have ever been. The view was breath taking!!! We had such a great time hanging out and exploring the beach. We are from Florida so this beach was so different. Everyone loved it! I can't wait until we can visit again.
My family stayed here during a completely remarkable lucky streak of amazing weather! We have never been able to stay at a place with such incredible views. I really cannot say enough about the magnificence of these vistas! The cabin is modest which makes it affordable, but you really and truly have everything you need to have an amazing time. One of the coolest parts of this place is that it is so close to the steep drive down to the beach. Just about all of the other homes on Irish Beach have a bit a of trek...not Grandma's cottage! There are incredibly cool long term forts down on the beach as well. The tide pools are marvelous and the owner even include a fantastic lamenated booklet in the cottage to help you identify the critters you will find there. Communicating with Jennifer was a dream.
The ooooonly thing that holds back a five star rating are the mattresses in the cabin. They are perhaps older and not comfortable. I am a light sleeper so it was kind of a big deal for me. I tried all three of them out and none were good. My husband and son slept just fine. I will bring a few roles of temperpedic bedding next time, because I truly love this home.
Hubby & I thoroughly enjoyed a week pretty much unplugged, although the wifi was great to do a daily check on emails & the landline phone was there if we needed it, so as secluded as we felt at the cottage, we still had access to the outside world if/when needed.
The cottage is cozy, complete with everything we needed, so much that we spent a good portion of our week without leaving, sitting on the deck listening to the ocean and the song birds and the absence of the crazy world we left behind. The cottage is well stocked with board games plus we had our guitars, congas & cameras and never once felt bored or restless.
We appreciated the previous guests efforts to leave us a spotless home & we worked to do the same for those who would come after us including washing the windows which really opens the view. Speaking of a open view, Grandma's bench was a perfect peaceful lookout and deer would pass by in the early evenings and a coyote too!
Daily long walks on the beach, deep breathing fresh ocean air, enjoying driftwood forts and beach combing while appreciating so many different colors of gray with bursts of sunshine and blue blue seas. Driving the loop we stopped and listened to the songs of all the birds, watching them while enjoying the spring blooms and the waterfall. Venturing out to visit Fort Bragg (Film Festival), and Pt Arena, Gualala, etc, and leisurely drives through back roads rounded out our trip. The local market was fully stocked with everything & had excellent produce & meat/fish that we enjoyed BBQ'd pretty much every night.
The owners were great to work with from beginning to end, making sure we had everything we needed to get the most from this magnificent experience. Thank you Jennifer for sharing this special place with us all.
We will be back.
We stated at Grandma's Cottage in November, and had an amazing time! The view is incredible and falling asleep to the waves crashing was complete relaxation. This little home is a gem and we are so looking forward to returning! Thank you for sharing your little slice of heaven with us!
