We absolutely love Hawaii and our special home in Waimanalo. We appreciate how blessed we are to be here and we want to share the gift of this beautiful community with others. We dreamed of one day returning to make Waimanalo Beach our permanent home after serving over 20 years in the Armed Forces. This dream became a reality because of our Hanai ('adopted') Grandparents (both Pearl Harbor survivors) and their family - it is through their love, support and generosity we are living our dream today. Our Grandparents had deep family roots in Hawaii stretching back to the 1880s and we look forward to sharing their story as a living legacy of the love and Ohana that anchors the true spirit of this place we call home
Tamy or Rick purchased this studio in 2004
While dating, we stayed in a rental just down the road and it was our dream to come back and open our own rental. After a lot of sweat, tears, hard work and determination we were able to make our dream into a reality!
Our rental is located 150 yards from one of the most pristine five mile stretches of beach on the island. Rarely crowded, it will feel like your own private beach.
Recently remodeled, our rental was designed by a 'Green' certified architect. The layout and design of our home captures both the sun rays and ocean breezes for the best natural lighting and cooling effects. Ceiling fans help to provide extra air flow so there is not a need for air conditioning. Soft colors add a warm and inviting feel to each room. The yard is a garden oasis. You will enjoy a variety of local trees, flowers and greenery. When blooming, the scent of Jasmine will fill your room.
Each suite provides all the comforts of home with a private hotel style bath. An attached den (common area) offers a place for quiet leisure activities.
Two extremely friendly outside dogs (Koa and George) will be happy to welcome you when you arrive and visit you everyday during your stay.
Rick and Tamy's lovely place far exceeded our expectations. The room we had was small but quite well appointed, very clean and very comfortable. There is a "common room" in which you can relax, read, play games, watch tv, have tea and coffee. Outside each suite is a lovely porch. We had our breakfast there each day. There is an outdoor shower (nice after the beach), beach chairs and umbrellas, boogie boards, surf boards, snorkels and flippers and just about any water "toy" you can think of. The grounds were beautifully landscaped and private...and the beach was one of the most beautiful and uncrowded beaches we saw on Oahu..and just across the street! Being in Waimanalo was convenient for touring by car all parts of the island and yet was away from the traffic and congestion (and the overinflated prices) of Honolulu and Waikiki. Our hostess, Carleen, a good friend of Rick and Tamy's (they were away at the time), was lovely and a most delightful and helpful guide to the area. Unbeknownst to us, there was a first class snorkeling area quite close to our Waimanalo "home" called Hamauna Bay and we took advantage of some really wonderful snorkeling without having to travel far. Our stay at Rick and Tamy's was the most relaxing part of our 17 day stay in the four islands we visited, and we most definitely would stay there again if the opportunity to return to Hawaii presents itself in the future.
Here's the short version: stay in one of Rick and Tammy's suites if you want a peaceful stay in paradise; if you like beautiful grounds and lovely hosts; if you want to be right by a picturesque and secluded, sandy beach; and if you want convenient access by car to Oahu and its sights.
My boyfriend and I wanted to experience Oahu, but we weren't wild about staying in Waikiki with tens of thousands of other visitors in an experience designed around tourism. We wanted the real thing--ocean breezes, sand between our toes, books and beverages in hand and the whole ocean seemingly to ourselves. At the same time, we hoped for a good launch pad to keep the whole island within reach so we could discover its treasures.
The Pineapple Suite delivered this in spades. Not only is the Suite pretty, private, secure and stocked with basic toiletries and a minifridge, but the grounds are meticulously kept and beautiful. Rick and Tammy (plus George and Koa the dogs and Tigger the cat) are warm and somehow manage to be available whenever you want company while allowing plenty of space when you don't.
Situated in Waimanalo, Rick and Tammy's place is everything we could have hoped for. The neighborhood is peaceful, and the beach is just across the street. Waimanalo Beach itself is gorgeous and still something of a secret unknown to visitors. During the working hours of the week the odds are that you'll see up to three people total along the entire expanse of the beach.
The town itself is quaint and relaxed. We felt safe walking along the streets day and night. We ate at three of the four main restaurants and recommend all of them: Ono Steaks and Shrimp Shack (truly ono--delicious; don't forget for dessert the sugary donuts called malasadas), 'Ai Love Nalo (fantastic vegan cuisine) and Serg's Mexican Kitchen (get the chorizo tacos). Kailua is a larger town to the north that has a number of great restaurants and small shops.
Waimanalo is just thirty minutes by car from the Honolulu Airport. Halona Blowhole is an impressive sight only ten minutes southeast, and the legendary snorkeling of Hanauma Bay is only ten minutes beyond that. The north shore surf and mythical Banzai Pipeline are an hour north through central Oahu or three hours north along the shore. Adventure awaits all along the way: kayak to an offshore island, see the stunning Laie Point, eat at the shrimp trucks of Kahuku or taste island life at the Polynesian Cultural Center.
An easy five stars.
I and my husband spent nearly 2 months in Waikii Hawaii. Last 11 nights we stayed with Rick and Tamy in their 'Pineapple Rm'. They were very nice. Tamy was very considerate, there were bandages and a mini sewing pack kept in the toilet.
The room was cozy and tidy and cute with some pineapples theme but a bit small. There's no writing desk, we requested a small foldable table put right next to one side of the bed. It worked perfectly!
It was convenient to go to the Waimanalo beach but it was windy for the whole period. Thus there were cross waves along the beach. It's great for surfing but not for us as we just want to swim around.
The lanai was great and we had our meals there. The disadvantage was that I got bitten by mos all the time. I needed to spray repellent before sitting there.
The room was hot as it sat in the Westside and behind the house. We had to leave the doors open in the common room and our room in order to get the breeze which led to no privacy. But we need to close the doors when sleeping which was hot though there's a ceiling fan. It's uncomfortable as the wind blew on your face when lying down.
I think the other bigger room is more comfortable than the Pineapple one.
THe place is perfect for an active couple or small active family. Beach access could only be better if literally on the beach itself. Beautiful grounds around the property. Rick and Tamy are extremely welcoming as are there dogs! Had a private parking spot off the street and very secure. Had a great time while in the area for a wedding. Was simply perfect for my needs.
Rick and Tammy are great hosts and they have an awesome piece of property. We reserved both suites for four adults before going on a cruise around the islands. We didn't want to leave. The most beautiful beach you will see in all of Hawaii is right across the street! No crowds, turquoise waters, blue sky are all right here and you're not in Waikiki. It's a great location for touring the island too. The rooms are clean and well maintained. The gardens are gorgeous with several water features throughout. All the amenities you need are right there! You won't want to leave the front porch. We usually skipped Oahu but no more. We will be back. Thank you Rick and Tammy for sharing your piece of paradise!
