Come and enjoy an authentic Old Nags Head style vacation. The home is decorated with vintage Outer Banks memorabilia where you can relax with peace and quiet. Whether you're watching the waves of the Atlantic Ocean or the Roanoke Sound you will be inspired by the views. There are few cottages on the Outer Banks like ours where you will find the views we offer and have a pond and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Park as a back yard. The turtles in the pond love to be fed.

The beach access is only 100 feet away leading you to the best stretch of white-sand beach in Nags Head that is far less crowded and quiet. You only have to walk past six houses to reach the ocean. The Google map is out dated by showing Surfside Drive between the beach road and the beach but it was washed away a few years ago. A better photographic image can be found at Bing and click on the Bird's Eye view button. Neither web site is updated to the point it shows the decks and screen porch on the back of the house. Escape the hustle and bustle of the noise you will find north of here.

The top floor is designed for family gatherings with the large Family room flowing into the Dining room and an open Kitchen area. This area has cathedral ceilings with a paddle fan and large windows. A sliding glass door leads out onto a covered porch area facing the ocean providing a nice relaxing atmosphere to people watch or use the built in bench and table to have a meal outside or to play games and socialize. The covered porch leads to a large sun deck that runs along the south side of the house. The south deck has a garden hose for misting yourself on those hot days while you are acquiring that perfect tan. The south deck leads to a large sun deck along the west side of the house that is excellent for entertaining and watching the sun set over the Cape Hatteras National Park and the Roanoke Sound. There are plenty of electrical outlets spaced along the decks also. Relax in our wood deck chairs with umbrella stands and foot rests while watching the wildlife around the pond or in the park.

The Family room has a 40” flat screen TV with DVD player, board games and video library.

The Kitchen area has granite counter tops and has all the modern conveniences of home with a GE Profile Range and Microwave, dishwasher and a refrigerator. There are plenty of cooking utensils and eating wares. We have had a lot of compliments on how well the kitchen is stocked.

The Master Bedroom with a queen bed is located on the top floor and has a sliding glass door leading onto the south deck. There is plenty of storage in the cedar lined closet in the Master bedroom. It also has flat screen TV and a DVD player. The top floor also has a full bath.

The first floor is where you will enter the house from the stairs from the ground floor. The entrance is located on the covered porch facing Old Oregon Inlet Road. This porch has built-in bench seats and is large enough for entertaining and a great place for the kids to play if they want to be away from the grown ups.

There are three bedrooms and a full bath located on the first floor. One bedroom has hardwood floors with two twin beds; the other two bedrooms are alike with a Queen Bed in each. All bedrooms have large cedar-lined closets, flat screen TVs with BlueRay DVD players, paddle fans, alarm clock radios, mirrors, dressers and plenty of windows for natural lighting. The double-stack washer/dryer is conveniently located in a hallway closet under the stairs going to the top floor. At the end of the hallway is another exit door leading out to the back yard and enclosed outside shower.

The Southern Pirate is located on nearly 1/2 acre of landscaped grounds. A short one story house is located north of the lot, an un-developed lot is to the south and our beautiful pond borders the west side. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore Park and the Roanoke Sound is located on the other side of our pond.

The Ground floor has a double concrete drive leading under the house for multiple vehicles. There's also parking for one extra vehicle beside the concrete drive in front of the house. A secure utility room is located under the house for storage of your beach items. An extra refrigerator is located in the utility room. A garden hose is available to wash off your items.

A park-style charcoal grill is located at the base of the stairs. Local law prohibits any grilling on a deck or under the house. An enclosed outside shower with hot and cold water is located at the back of the house. A fish cleaning station for your day's catch from the beach or from your drive out on the beach at Oregon Inlet is located next to the outside shower.

Across the street is a jogging/bicycle/walking trail that extends for 6 miles.

The Beach Access is almost directly across the street from the cottage. Walk across Old Oregon Inlet Road to the small footbridge to the concrete bike path/sidewalk. Take a left and walk north a few feet to Oregon Road. Turn right and you will see the beach directly in front of you. The wide flat white sand beaches of South Nags Head are some of the cleanest beaches on the Outer Banks.

We provide bed linens, towels and one roll of toilet paper when you arrive. Please bring your own beach towels.

About Eric Chandler

I started vacationing in Nags Head in 1980 at 13 years old and my mother and I bought our first cottage in 1994 in Kill Devil Hills. Whalebone Junction and the Oregon Inlet area has always been my favorite area so I was fortunate enough to be able to buy this home in 2011. I named the cottage 'The Southern Pirate' and it is located halfway between my two favorite spots. I decided to call it 'The Southern Pirate' for numerous reasons. Southern because my 9th Great Grandfather, John Chandler, arrived at Jamestown on June 10, 1610 aboard the ship Hercules and my family has been proud Southerners ever since. Secondly, because the home is located in South Nags Head. Pirate came from the Outer Banks reputation of harboring pirates. The map is out dated, Surfside Drive was washed away years ago and there's only six houses between us and the beach.

Eric Chandler purchased this house in 2011

Why Eric Chandler chose Nags Head

It's quiet and out of the way from the hustle and bustle. The beach seems flatter and the sand appears to be like white sugar. Look us up on Facebook under The Southern Pirate

What makes this house unique

The views of the Cape Hatteras National Park, Roanoke Sound, Atlantic Ocean and the wildlife around the pond and nearly 1/2 acre yard is always changing. The area is quiet and relaxing with the best white-sand beaches.

Had a great vacation!

  • 5 of 5

Thank-you for so thoughtfully thinking about everything a family might need to have a great vacation. I liked that there were multiple decks for relaxing and watching the world go by. The kitchen had everything we needed, and we like to cook, so were happy that all appliances and gadgets were in great working condition. Being able to access the beach so quickly was wonderful and a large grocery store was a quick trip away. I would recommend this home to anyone that wants a great week at the beach and that likes a quiet and relaxing time.

Owner's Response: First off, Thank you for staying at The Southern Pirate and we're glad you had a wonderful time. The decks are at the top of my list of what I love about this house, so many to relax on and sometimes the kids can have their own if they don't want to hang around the adults. Secondly, Thank you for the review and for using VRBO. I hope your family can come back again.

So relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time to Nags Head and we really were not sure what to expect! And, wow, were we totally impressed with the house, the backyard sanctuary, the proximity to the beach and all the amenities that were available to us. The house had everything you "could" have forgotten. We brought a giant wagon for our kids and for our beach things, but saw that in the bottom shed - there is a beach wagon with giant wheels for carting your things. That is just one of the many items that are there for your use. The kids loved the outdoor shower everyday after the beach too! Overall, we would totally stay here again and hopefully make it longer than a week!

Awesome Experience - Very Clean, Well Stocked, and Great Location for Families and Fishermen alike

  • 5 of 5

We have a group of guys that have been fishing offshore out of Oregon-Inlet for years. Without going into details, this is the first year we have actually had to rent a house via VRBO and what a great experience it was. We rented Eric Chandlers Southern Pirate @ MilePost 20 in South Nags Head and was extremely impressed with the quality, amenities, and location of this house. Eric was incredible to work with and has done an incredible job stocking the house for visitors comfort. The kitchen is well stocked with everything one could possibly want, he even has 2 waffle makers. For beach goers, the location is incredible in South Nags Head and the house is 3 minute walk across the street made easier by the fact that house is stocked with Beach Cart for transport and 2 nice Rio backpack beach chairs. This house is perfect for both families and Fishermen. Oregon-inlet Fishing center is 5 minutes away. For families with children, hours of built-in entertainment for kids feeding the turtles in the pond behind the house. In addition to screen-ed deck on 2nd floor, there is full wrap around deck on the 3rd floor that covers three full sides of the house with plenty of nice outdoor chairs for comfort. For those surf fishing or fishing in the sound, the house comes with a great fish cleaning station on the bottom floor with multiple water hoses for convenience of cleaning fish, coolers, or hosing off beach gear. We were also impressed with the fact that all the furniture in the house seems to be new and the fishing/nautical theme décor is very well done. In summary, I can't say enough good things about this house and the location for beach-goers or fishermen. I have already booked my stay for next year.

Owner's Response: Thanks Dan for the awesome review and the reservation for next year. It was nice meeting you and glad that you had a great vacation on the Outer Banks. From the pictures you sent me your fishing trips were well worth it and for everyone who reads this the best Gulf Stream fishing is during the end of March to the beginning of June if you're looking for Tuna and Mahi Mahi. Looking for to working with you again next Spring, Thanks Dan.

Great spot! Fully stocked.

  • 4 of 5

My family and I stayed in this rental this past week and had a great time! There was plenty of room, beds were nice and clean (and comfortable), Eric left plenty of towels and wash rags (also clean) for our stay. The kitchen was very well stocked! The table was huge and seated us all very well. The outdoor deck was spacious and so fun! You wouldnt believe the amount of seating along the deck. The kids loved running from level to level, enjoying both the backyard view (which was awesome with the turtle pond) and the front view where you can see a small piece of the ocean and watch the waves. The beach itself was to die for. Just gorgeous. We couldn't get over how private it was. We were the only family out there aside from a passing neighbor with their dog once in a while. It was quiet and calm. (Mind you, we stayed in March) We didn't have any real issues with the property. We had a couple of unwanted guests (wasps) enter the home on occasion but there is wasp spray under the kitchen sink that did the job just fine. It was overall clean (could use a deep cleaning probably) but in no way did we feel uncomfortable in the home or that it was neglected at all. The house is extremely easy to get to, and the parking was great! Room for 2 cars. There was plenty of beach equipment located just under the house in the storage unit beside the covered parking. We used the provided wagon to wheel our belongings back and forth from the beach which is only one block away down on a private dead end street. It was nice to have 3 of the bedrooms downstairs as well, for more privacy. (The master is upstairs along with the kitchen/living room and dining area.) There are 4 doors (2 on each level) leading to different parts of the deck so we could easily slip in and out without waking the children. The only issue we really had with the home was the noise walking upstairs. You have to tip toe or you sound like a herd of elephants to the downstairs sleepers, lol. But again, it wasn't even really an issue. In one of the downstairs bedrooms, I had convinced myself something was living in the closet and scraping the door at night until we looked out the window and saw it was just a branch from a tree scraping the outside of the home in the wind. Ha! So funny. Just warning the next guests. ;) There are lots of steps so I wouldn't recommend this for the elderly at all. Thanks for the hospitality!!

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying at The Southern Pirate and glad you enjoyed your vacation. The beaches are great, almost unspoiled and so quiet. About the wasps, the Winter nest had just been removed and the majority of the unwanted guests had been removed and the only issue I could think of needing cleaning may have been the windows. It's almost impossible to keep them clean in January, February and March due to the continuous Noréaster storms and high winds that blow the salt air from the beach. Thanks again for visiting the Outer Banks.

Everything and More

  • 5 of 5

We would not be able to say enough about the overwhelmingly positive experience we've had throughout our dealings with the Southern Pirate and Eric Chandler. There is nothing I can add that had not already been mentioned here, so I'll only echo that the property is indeed clean, tastefully decorated, well - maintained, its kitchen well serviced, the location perfect, and its owner an absolute pleasure to work with.

My family, including my sister, nieces, children, grandson, and 89 year - old grandmother recouped some much needed together time over Thanksgiving. We won't forget these last 5 days and hope it won't be our last trip. Thank you for helping us create some wonderful memories.

Tuna trip

  • 5 of 5

The house was perfect for our crew. We came down to fish out of the Oregon inlet. The rental was very close to the marina. The house was clean and very spacious. The house provided all the amenities that we needed. The freezer and refrigerator room was great for our catch. The patio and deck space was great at night to relax and tell lies. I would highly recommend this rental.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying at The Southern Pirate. The house is only three miles from Oregon Inlet so it's a short drive to either fish or see the day's catch come in around 4pm. Glad you had a great time and it sounds like you had a successful fishing trip. Thank you again and hope to have you back.
