Come and enjoy an authentic Old Nags Head style vacation. The home is decorated with vintage Outer Banks memorabilia where you can relax with peace and quiet. Whether you're watching the waves of the Atlantic Ocean or the Roanoke Sound you will be inspired by the views. There are few cottages on the Outer Banks like ours where you will find the views we offer and have a pond and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore Park as a back yard. The turtles in the pond love to be fed.

The beach access is only 100 feet away leading you to the best stretch of white-sand beach in Nags Head that is far less crowded and quiet. You only have to walk past six houses to reach the ocean. The Google map is out dated by showing Surfside Drive between the beach road and the beach but it was washed away a few years ago. A better photographic image can be found at Bing and click on the Bird's Eye view button. Neither web site is updated to the point it shows the decks and screen porch on the back of the house. Escape the hustle and bustle of the noise you will find north of here.

The top floor is designed for family gatherings with the large Family room flowing into the Dining room and an open Kitchen area. This area has cathedral ceilings with a paddle fan and large windows. A sliding glass door leads out onto a covered porch area facing the ocean providing a nice relaxing atmosphere to people watch or use the built in bench and table to have a meal outside or to play games and socialize. The covered porch leads to a large sun deck that runs along the south side of the house. The south deck has a garden hose for misting yourself on those hot days while you are acquiring that perfect tan. The south deck leads to a large sun deck along the west side of the house that is excellent for entertaining and watching the sun set over the Cape Hatteras National Park and the Roanoke Sound. There are plenty of electrical outlets spaced along the decks also. Relax in our wood deck chairs with umbrella stands and foot rests while watching the wildlife around the pond or in the park.

The Family room has a 40” flat screen TV with DVD player, board games and video library.

The Kitchen area has granite counter tops and has all the modern conveniences of home with a GE Profile Range and Microwave, dishwasher and a refrigerator. There are plenty of cooking utensils and eating wares. We have had a lot of compliments on how well the kitchen is stocked.

The Master Bedroom with a queen bed is located on the top floor and has a sliding glass door leading onto the south deck. There is plenty of storage in the cedar lined closet in the Master bedroom. It also has flat screen TV and a DVD player. The top floor also has a full bath.

The first floor is where you will enter the house from the stairs from the ground floor. The entrance is located on the covered porch facing Old Oregon Inlet Road. This porch has built-in bench seats and is large enough for entertaining and a great place for the kids to play if they want to be away from the grown ups.

There are three bedrooms and a full bath located on the first floor. One bedroom has hardwood floors with two twin beds; the other two bedrooms are alike with a Queen Bed in each. All bedrooms have large cedar-lined closets, flat screen TVs with BlueRay DVD players, paddle fans, alarm clock radios, mirrors, dressers and plenty of windows for natural lighting. The double-stack washer/dryer is conveniently located in a hallway closet under the stairs going to the top floor. At the end of the hallway is another exit door leading out to the back yard and enclosed outside shower.

The Southern Pirate is located on nearly 1/2 acre of landscaped grounds. A short one story house is located north of the lot, an un-developed lot is to the south and our beautiful pond borders the west side. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore Park and the Roanoke Sound is located on the other side of our pond.

The Ground floor has a double concrete drive leading under the house for multiple vehicles. There's also parking for one extra vehicle beside the concrete drive in front of the house. A secure utility room is located under the house for storage of your beach items. An extra refrigerator is located in the utility room. A garden hose is available to wash off your items.

A park-style charcoal grill is located at the base of the stairs. Local law prohibits any grilling on a deck or under the house. An enclosed outside shower with hot and cold water is located at the back of the house. A fish cleaning station for your day's catch from the beach or from your drive out on the beach at Oregon Inlet is located next to the outside shower.

Across the street is a jogging/bicycle/walking trail that extends for 6 miles.

The Beach Access is almost directly across the street from the cottage. Walk across Old Oregon Inlet Road to the small footbridge to the concrete bike path/sidewalk. Take a left and walk north a few feet to Oregon Road. Turn right and you will see the beach directly in front of you. The wide flat white sand beaches of South Nags Head are some of the cleanest beaches on the Outer Banks.

We provide bed linens, towels and one roll of toilet paper when you arrive. Please bring your own beach towels.

About Eric Chandler

I started vacationing in Nags Head in 1980 at 13 years old and my mother and I bought our first cottage in 1994 in Kill Devil Hills. Whalebone Junction and the Oregon Inlet area has always been my favorite area so I was fortunate enough to be able to buy this home in 2011. I named the cottage 'The Southern Pirate' and it is located halfway between my two favorite spots. I decided to call it 'The Southern Pirate' for numerous reasons. Southern because my 9th Great Grandfather, John Chandler, arrived at Jamestown on June 10, 1610 aboard the ship Hercules and my family has been proud Southerners ever since. Secondly, because the home is located in South Nags Head. Pirate came from the Outer Banks reputation of harboring pirates. The map is out dated, Surfside Drive was washed away years ago and there's only six houses between us and the beach.

Eric Chandler purchased this house in 2011

Why Eric Chandler chose Nags Head

It's quiet and out of the way from the hustle and bustle. The beach seems flatter and the sand appears to be like white sugar. Look us up on Facebook under The Southern Pirate

What makes this house unique

The views of the Cape Hatteras National Park, Roanoke Sound, Atlantic Ocean and the wildlife around the pond and nearly 1/2 acre yard is always changing. The area is quiet and relaxing with the best white-sand beaches.

A great place for our family of 8

  • 5 of 5

The location is fantastic, with the reserve behind giving a sense of seclusion, very little traffic, and the short walk to the beach ideal. Turtle feeding was fun, as others have commented. The kitchen was well-equipped and enabled us to cook and grill as we pleased. We enjoyed the multitude of decks and views, and the large table that easily accommodated us. It enabled us to kick back and relax and enjoy the sun, surf, and sand!

A great week in June

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to the Outer Banks and we found the Southern Pirate on VRBO, knowing little about the different areas and towns. We could not have been more happy with our stay and the house. Eric's communication was fantastic. Along with having all of the info on the HomeAway app, he had sent us a message several weeks in advance with the details of our stay.

One of the highlights of the house is the location. The house is about 2 miles south of Nag's Head. A perfect spot in my mind. We drove several miles north and south and would not have picked a different spot. The restaurants, shops, etc. are all north in Nag's Head, Kill Devil Hill, and Kitty Hawk. They are convenient, but enough of a distance that this area was quiet and felt more secluded. There are houses around you, but it was very quiet during our stay. As advertised, the beach is a short, three minute walk.

Overall, the house was clean and more than spacious enough for our family of seven. The outdoor shower was great for coming back from the beach. The kids had a great time at the turtle pond. We just took our dinner scraps down each night and the turtles appeared and were eager to feast! The TV's in the bedrooms were a hit (our kids don't have that back home.) The decks are wonderful as you could see the Ocean and the Sound from the top deck.

Thank you for a great week of memories for our family!

Owner's Response: Thank you James for staying at The Southern Pirate and choosing the Outer Banks for your family vacation. I hope your family can come back again to make more memories. The peace and quiet of the South Nags Head area makes me not want to leave when I'm on the Outer Banks. Thanks again for staying with us.

My family really enjoyed our stay in the house. The house was everything we hoped it would be and more. With a nice easy walk to the beach it was perfect.

Great experience

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed at the Southern Pirate for the week and loved it! The home was in a quiet area within minutes of beach access. Upon arrival we found the house to be very clean and well kept. Also, it was well stocked with supplies needed for the week. The kids loved the turtle pond in the back yard!

Owner's Response: Glad you had a great time and enjoyed the turtles. The pond has been recently stocked with fish and we are hoping to see a positive result in a few years after they grow up. Thank you for staying at The Southern Pirate!!

Terrific location in OBX Nags Head area, good price, decor needs updating

  • 4 of 5

This sweet home is in a terrific, close to everything, but still peaceful and serene location. Nice kitchen amenities and dining area. Furnishings, baths, and artwork/accessories are dated. More towels (since we flew to the Outer Banks and could not pack towels) and paper products in the baths would have been nice. Great table on front porch with bit of an ocean view, loved this!

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying at The Southern Pirate. Not sure what happened with the paper products for the bathroom, the cleaning staff should have left a full roll of toilet paper in each bathroom. Hope you come back to the Outer Banks again!!

Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

What a great vacation!!! It started with my oldest getting out of his car and proclaiming "Dad, look at this incredible fishing cleaning table!" My boys have their beach priorities! Walking in did not feel like we were walking into a vacation home, it felt like our home! From the fishing decorations to the lay out, to the well stocked kitchen...I could go on and on. From the very first contact Mr. Chandler was expeditious in communicating with me. We loved the off street area for the kids to hover-board, to the ease of getting to the beach. The porches were so nice to relax on and listen to the ocean. We love to fish and cook our catch. I found everything that I needed to prepare and cook our meals. We absolutely loved the place and are very grateful for the opportunity to stay here. My only regret is that there aren't many days left on this years availability calendar. We will definitely make future plans here!
