As prior owner of Acorn Cottage Bed & Breakfast in Asheville, NC, for 12 years, you can rest assured your vacation experience will be superb.

I am currently Executive Director of Tourism and have had a diverse background as a Department Store Buyer , non-profit museum directer and restaurant manager.

Why Sharon Tabor chose Asheville Area

My favorite place is Asheville where I owned Acorn Cottage B&B. I fell in love with the cozy, unique property that has the best of both worlds: the quiet peacful atmosphere of the mountains, but convenient to town.

It's absolutely amazing how close the house is to everything there is to do in the area, but how quiet it is! You actually feel as if you are miles from town - but you aren't!

What makes this bungalow unique

I love sitting on the porch listing to the tree frogs and crickets at night. During the winter I enjoy curling up in the recliner chair in front of the fire with a good book and glass of wine.

For a marvelous mountain view, a short walk up Breckinridge Pkwy near the house reveals the magic of the area.

I love the diversity of cuisine in the Asheville & Weaverville area less than a 10 minute drive from the house.

Great location!

Quiet and peaceful except for a rooster that woke us up early. Very comfortable, but kitchen is not well equipped. Nearby restaurants are very good.

our stay

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Laurel Cabin. It is a really quaint little house and we were very comfortable. We prefer fresh air to air-conditioning and found that we couldn't open most of the windows, and the window air-condition units were very noisy. Also we would have liked a few serving dishes, and hangars, but otherwise the cottage was well equipped

House needs some work

Overall, we had a nice stay. The house was only a few minutes from downtown Asheville. The queen bed in the master was comfortable. Cannot attest to the twin beds in the other room since they were not used. It was nice having a fireplace to turn on quickly. The first night was chilly, but after that we didn't use it.

Here are my issues. The floors are quite uneven and a little disconcerting. The bathroom is set up strangely. A larger person would have issues getting between the sink and the bathtub to get to the toilet. The drains, both the tub and the sink, in the bathroom backup quickly. The curtains throughout the house are too long. While this might sound petty, it does cause an issue when trying to get into the bed on the side closest to the wall. A bit of a tripping hazard between that and the cord from the AC on the floor. The cabinet in the kitchen that is across from the refrigerator is not anchored to the wall, and almost tipped over (partly due to the slanted floors). The landscaping could use some maintenance.

Owner's Response: I am sorry the house did not meet your expectations. 1) We have a new groundskeeper who is still learning parameters. The flower beds have been addressed the past 2 days, otherwise the lawn was mowed. 2) The house was hand-built in 1945 by a forest ranger. The only way to correct the floors is to demolish the house. It is very secure with concrete, steel and solid oak supports. It is a quirky feature that makes the house unique. 3) The window treatments were designed to be tucked under to create a soft effect at the hem. Sometimes the housekeeper forgets to turn them under when in a hurry to turn the house over for the next guest. 4) We tried pedestal sinks in the bathroom to create more space, but they pulled away from the wall due to people leaning on them. Until we find a better solution, a more solid and safe option is a cabinet sink. 5) The appliance center cabinet cannot be attached to the wall without eliminating access to the electrical outlet: not something the housing inspector will approve. One option was to provide an open shelf concept so people don't grab onto the doors, but that solution makes supplies appear messy and unorganized. My carpenter is working on a table concept with basket storage, but has been unable to access the house for construction efforts due to the occupancy. 6) The antique screen door has been repaired multiple times, but sometimes people use their feet to kick open the screen door, which requires constant repair issues. We strive to provide a comfortable, quiet place for people to relax in a wooded, country, mountain atmosphere but convenient to city amenities. We apologize we did not meet your exceptions.

Nice, comfortable, clean. Steps and walk a bit uneven and tricky if coming in at night. Overall we liked it enough to come home and book for next year. Convenient to everything.
