About Kathie Murphy

My husband is a retired surgeon and I trained dressage horses and ran our breeding and boarding barn. We have a 100 acre ranch outside Ashland where we board dogs, raise sheep and run cattle. We bought the land in Crescent City, cleared it then built this as second home. The development of the gardens have been a joy for us.

Why Kathie Murphy chose North Coast California

Crescent city has so many things to see and do. It is also close enough for us to go back and forth. The climate is very different from Ashland and is a welcome change from inland weather.

What makes this house unique

It has given us a place to get all our family together in one place.

Happy visitors, loved cottage

  • 5 of 5

Yes, the road is bad But the distance is short and the peaceful, private setting is worth a few bumps. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this lovely cottage. We found it extremely clean and fresh smelling. Loved the yard and all the flowers. Had family over and made lasagna and a cake - the kitchen is stocked with everything needed for homemade cooking. Would thoroughly recommend this rental!

Beautiful, peaceful space. And big!

  • 4 of 5

Two colleagues and I stayed here on a business trip and absolutely loved the house. Beautiful inside and out. It had everything we needed and more. Loved the peaceful setting and layout. And that sun room overlooking the back garden--wow! All the amenities we wanted--from coffee and tea to decent, if slow, wifi. Only drawback was the big, spine-shaking potholes covering every inch of the dirt/gravel road on the way in--it has been a long, rainy winter and the little rental car bottomed out several times even though we drove in at 5 MPH. I still plan to come back with my family when we can.

too Old and musty for the price

  • 3 of 5

Just getting there in a car would have been scary to some as the gravel road is full of huge pot holes. Luckily we both had trucks. When we got there, it took a day to heat the place up and the musty smell never fulling went away. Every piece of cloth furniture is full of stains so we appreciated the leather pieces. The one HDTV in the place isn't even being used with an HDMI cable to the satellite dish but the yard was wonderful even in the middle of a huge storm. My little dogs were safe and happy. I suggest, to the owners and manager, that this place needs a good going over. Make professional notes, have clean furniture, clean out drawers, hair dryer in the bathroom over an iron. Stream line the heating problem, it's pretty confusing. The place is cute but needs some love inside.

Owner's Response: The house is 8 years old built with a lot of love. All furniture is leather except the 2 oak couches in sunroom. Yes Napa is bad, the winter has been very wet and the residents must maintain it. However the grading in these conditions does not last more than a day or two. There has never been any water intrusion in the house, this however is a very wet climate. Our rates have remained the same for the 5 years we have been doing vacation rental.Thank you ,all comments are listened to. Lovely secluded home

  • 4 of 5

We spent the entire month of February, 2017 at this location. The home is very comfortable and secluded with beautiful gardens. The owners have obviously spent much time working the grounds. The home was also well equipped with with spices, cooking ware, paper towels, toilet paper, etc. This really saved a lot of time and expense. The location is only a few miles away from redwood forests which can be easily explored from the house. Great hiking trails in the forests as well. The redwood forests were our favorite item on the vacation. Also, the pacific ocean is only a mile away so spending time on the beaches are great too. Very enjoyable stay.

Nice grounds surrounding a beautiful cottage, so close to ocean you could hear it

  • 4 of 5

Lovely space for a getaway, close to hikes, the ocean and crescent city though secluded enough for privacy. Only qualm was the only working fireplace was far away from the rest of the house in the spacious sun room. On a cold rainy day and night, it would be ideal to have a working fireplace in the living room. Beautiful place however, I'd stay here again.
