Overview

About the property

Cottage, 3+ Bedrooms, 3.5+ Baths (Sleeps 6)

In the Eastern Townships of Quebec, situated on Lake Memphremagog, the cottage faces southwest with a spectacular view over the lake towards Owl’s Head ski hill. This orientation means that there is sun on the beach and waterfront all day long, a rare advantge on this North-South lake. Most properties get either morning or afternoon sun, but not both. We are most fortunate!

The property was built in the late 1940’s but has grown over the years. The current owner is only the third owner and has had the privilege of this beautiful location since 1978. This is truly a place to make memories. The tranquil setting of the lake, with the water at your doorstep is sure to relax and rejuvenate the soul. Lake Mempremagog is still a pristine, clean lake and our location has a clean gravel lake bottom. We have no seaweed.

Extending 32 miles from Magog Quebec to Newport, Vermont, this is a freshwater, glacial lake. Ideal for the enjoyment of water sports, the property is equipped with many water and boating accessories.

The character and ambiance of the house has been preserved with the original wide pine wall paneling in the kitchen and small living room. The house has the feel of a summer cottage with modern amenities. The kitchen has beautiful granite counters and brand new stainless steel appliances. The recently renovated Master suite includes a new bathroom with deep soaker tub, custom glass shower enclosure and a flat screen television. The Master bedroom also has a wood stove.

The house also has a collection of National Geographic magazines and books about nature. You never know when you might find a flower being pressed between the pages of an old book; waiting for a child to come and re-discover her preserved treasure. There is a rock collection sitting in an old ice cream container that is now into its second generation of “life”. Our granddaughter has begun to add her discoveries to the collection started by her mother.

Swimming, snorkeling, fishing, paddle boating, sailing, canoeing, tubing, and water skiing are all activities possible at this property, but perhaps the most pleasant is watching the sunset while sitting on the dock.

The winter seasons gives us a chance to enjoy three of the best ski hills in the east. Just 15 minutes away from Owl's Head Ski Resort, a wonderful family focused ski hill. With great downhill elevations, but also extensive slopes for children, Owl's Head is where three generations of our family have learned to ski. On the edge of Lake Memphremagog, Owl's Head offers spectacular views. In the opposite direction, 15 minutes away is Orford Ski Resort. Part of a Quebec provincial park this resort offers great downhill as well as cross country and snow showing. A beautiful tranquil setting, Orford has a great chalet so you can extend your ski day into the evening.

If you are inclined to travel just a bit farther; 40 minutes you can cross the border into Vermont and enjoy the incessant snow of Jay Peak. With the biggest vertical drop in the Northeast and the luxury of its location in some bizarre 'it is always snowing' at Jay this ski hill is sure to have challenges for the most expert skiers. This ski hill has the most natural snow in the entire Northeast which allows for one of the longest ski seasons available.

About Suzanne S. Kenny

We have enjoyed this property with our children and now our grandchildren. The oldest three of our five children have started families. We have been blessed to have the experience of this home. The lake gives us the peace of nature and family memories for the generations. It has been and is a retreat for three generations now.

Suzanne S. Kenny purchased this cottage in 1978

Why Suzanne S. Kenny chose Lake Memphremagog

We saw the property from the frozen lake in the middle of winter and bought it without even going inside. The view and location are beautiful and we were very lucky to have bought it when we did. It has grown with our family and is a favorite place of all of us.

What makes this cottage unique

We have made available to guests all the 'toys' of our life on the lake. We have waterfront equipment of all sorts and for all ages. The house has been our place of relaxation and family fun for 3 generations now and we are very happy to share that experience with you. It is a place to make memories.

Well equipped property, beautiful family retreat and incredible view

  • 5 of 5

We had the chance to spend a week at this beautiful property in the Sergant bay of the Memphremagog.

Pros:

- Close to Montréal

- BEAUTIFUL view from many points on the property

- Well equipped, complete, prepared, CLEAN property -- well thought for guests

- Equipped for young families, somewhat childproof

- A lot of toys and entertainment for everyone (toys inside, outside, watertoys)

- Pantry loaded (take a look at it before buying too many things)

- Large dock with very inviting water

- INCREDIBLE fishing, many species

Cons (or Suggestions!):

- Stairs that go from cottage to water level are highly dangerous (mentioned by other reviewer). The stairs that go from the parking to the cottage also would need to be worked on.

- Dock would benefit from a ladder (mentioned by other reviewer)

- Access to dock from land needs some form of a bridge

- BBQ grill needs some love :-)

Note that during our stay there was HEAVY contruction on the neighboors boathouse that started around 6h00 AM. The boathouse is right next to the property (50 feet). This ruined some of our nights -- I did not include this fact in my star rating being of course temporary, but it would have been nice to be informed to shift our sleep schedule accordingly.

If you are interested in fishing, the Memphremagog (especially the deep part of the lake) is an extremely rich and diversified source of fishes, especially the salmonid family. There are a lot of fishes, even from the cottage's dock where you can catch basses, crappies and perches very easily. A lot of fishing gear is available from the cottage, even an aluminum boat + gaz engine if you want to go out (check for wind first). You can easily dock your own boat -- there is around 5 feet of water at the dock's deepest end.

I would like to finish my review by thanking the owner (Suzanne) who was extremely helpful in making sure our stay would be enjoyed by our party. We would definitely recommend this place and are considering renting again next year.

Owner's Response: Hello Christian, Thank you for the review. It is always pleasing to hear that guest enjoyed their stay. We really try to make sure that your visit is as comfortable and effortless as possible. You are correct that the site requires some dexterity. We are on a hill and there are stairs everywhere! We really try to stay on top of the stairs (no pun intended ;) but the winters are harsh. We will be working on them this summer. Though just a warning, it would be nice to have a smooth transition from the dock to the stone stairs, not to have to go down to the ground and then back up to the stone steps, but the variation of the water height can be so great that we have never had success with this and frankly we have just given up. We just have to accept the up and down. I am sorry! You are correct, that the work next door has been very annoying. We were not warned that it was going to occur. Wade discovered it one Saturday when he arrived to arrange for the next guests. When he asked the neighbor about it he was told that it was to be completed the following Monday. I am afraid that you may not have been the only guest to suffer this disruption as despite the promise, they have been shifting the end date. I wish that we had any control over this, but we don't. However, after this, there is nothing else for him to renovate. Next summer will be totally tranquil. Neighbors! What can you do?! Thank you again and have a pleasant winter. Please know we would be very happy to welcome you again. Regards, Suzanne

wonderful family vacation setting

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this lake house. the views were incredible across the lake to the mountains. We saw loons, gray herons, bald eagles while using our kayaks! We paddled their canoe out in the lake near dusk several evenings. We watched a few nice sunsets (and rainbows) best seen from the water. we had plenty of room in the house for our family of 6. A very clean home, comfortable furniture, plenty of bathrooms, and helpful to have all the towels provided. Fun to watch storms rolling in across the water from the safety of the living room. A somewhat strong wood stove smoke smell initially, but this became less noticeable over time. Beautiful landscaping in the yard with terracing. This part of the lake is relatively quiet in terms of motorized craft (although it was early in the season) and it was only a 20 minute drive to Magog which had a good size grocery store and several restaurants and galleries to explore. Galley size kitchen a little tight for food prep/cooking, but a nice gas stove and plenty of dining and refrigerator space, pots/pans/plates/silverware... We would definitely return here

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay. It is such a tranquil location and the lake is magic. I do agree, the kitchen is small, but I usually cook alone (its hard to get anyone to come inside from the lake to help ;) and I love being able to reach everything easily and efficiently, but you are are correct, it is not a kitchen for the addition of a couple of sous chefs. Though in the summer I do have a sous chef at the BBQ! Please think of us for your next vacation. We very much appreciated your consideration for the property. Regards Suzanne

A beautiful spot on a quality lake. Sweeping views and good swimming!

  • 4 of 5

This rental is great for two families because each can have its own space. The master bedroom on the walkout basement level is modern and comfortable, and the upstairs level has rustic cottage charm. The beach has a gradual water entry for little kids, and adults can jump off the dock (however there is no ladder for climbing back up). Use of a motorboat and canoe are nice bonuses. The only negative is that the outdoor stairways are challenging and can be a hazard for kids. The cottage's location is great, with a general store nearby and all the shops of Magog only 25 mins away. Overall, highly recommended!

Owner's Response: Hello, Thank you very much for your review. I will encourage my husband to put the ladder back on the dock. We didn't think anyone was using it ;) You are correct, the stairs are steep, but I used to have my children walk up the hill around the house instead. It takes a bit longer, but when my children had short legs they found the hill easier than some of the big steps. And then they got big! Now they send their children that way. We hope that you will visit us again. Have a great winter. Thanks again, Suzanne

Great Waterfront Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at the waterfront cottage in Austin! The property is well maintained and has many updates. The owners were very welcoming and quick to answer questions. The scenery is beautiful with views of the lake and mountains. The property has many amenities both inside the cottage and for the water, and is located close to Magog where there are many restaurants and opportunities for shopping. There is also a well stocked variety store located just minutes from the cottage. We would highly recommend staying there and hope to return for another visit in the future!

Great location, excellent views!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed a week at the house with our 2 year old twins and their grandparents. The property was exactly as described. I definately recommend the property. It was great for our family gathering. There are two family rooms that offer alot of seating for families to gather and a seperate dining room. There are also two refrigerators which was a help. It was a very comfortable stay. We enjoyed having access to and use of the canoe and motor boat,a significant plus. We enjoyed walking on the quiet road and enjoyed the privacy of the home. There is a beautiful and stable deck to sit on and enjoy the view as well as a nice lawn with beautiful flower beds. The lake was very quiet during the week and very peaceful. As a mother of twin toddlers, the most important feature about the house was that it had child gates especially on the outside deck. We would very happily stay at the house again and hope to soon. The only things I can think of that may be helpful for others to know is that there are several stairs from where you park your car to the door and I recommend bringing a flat sheet for each bed as only a fitted sheet was provided.

Great Summer Getaway on the Water

  • 5 of 5

Cottage was as described (fully equipped). Got to spend lots of time on the water and then relaxed while being able to watch the Olympics. Stayed with two teenage boys who adored having the wifi in the cottage. It is rare to have such quality accomodation at such a reasonable price. Highly recommended.
