Why Jan Dertzbaugh chose Luray
Sweetwater was love at first sight! We originally purchased it as a private retreat, but found that being able to show others the Virginia Outdoors and what a relaxing time was all about was extremely gratifying and decided to start sharing it with others . Life here moves at the speed of the river - very slowly! The river at Sweetwater washes away all the stresses associated with life in and around the National Capital region and rejuvenates the mind, body and soul as only the peace and solitude of the outdoors can.
What makes this Cottage unique
Love sitting out along the river bank on a cool spring morning listening to the songs of the Baltimore Orioles or the owls hooting on a warm summer night while sleeping on the screened in porch. The peace and tranquility of floating down the river on a warm summers day while laying on an air mattress with my face submerged under water with mask and snorkel watching the river bottom and all the associated critters pass by. Or the joy of a “gourmet” smore cooked to perfection over a campfire while playing 4, 5, 6, and 12 stringed instruments and singing (or howling) with friends and family is one of life's greatest pleasures. Being rewarded with a nice bass as a result of a not so perfect cast. Finally, marveling at all of the wonders that surround you at Sweetwater and appreciating the beauty of God's creativity!

A slice of heaven
We absolutely loved our stay here! The property was perfect. The cabin was a great size and my daughter loved the swing!! We could let our dog roam around and get wet in the river. We had no cell phone service- which we truly enjoyed :). The internet was great though. There was also a ton of movies to watch. We loved every minute of our stay :)
Great property. Amazing location. Everything the wife and I were hoping for on this trip. The only negative that could be said was the fish were uncooperative, and that is nobody's fault but the fish. But even not catching was still relaxing, because the location was so perfect. 12/10, will stay again.
Perfect River Get Away!
The property is clean, spacious and the kitchen has everything you can think of! We cooked, baked, nuked, toasted, gas grilled and wood grilled finding everything we needed! There are many pantry items available incase you forget any. The house was clean and the outsides well taken care of. The decor of a fishing /hunting cabin is cozy and appropriate :) We lounged by the water and on the huge porch. Ceiling fans in the porch is perfect when the heat starts going up. There are kayaks, canoes and floaties available. The water at the end of May was already warm enough to enjoy. There are stairs into the river and footwear is a good idea when walking in and through the river with its many boulder size rocks etcs. We had fun fishing although my curse still remains that anyone with me cant catch fish :) we did however see people around us catching!!! We plan on coming back soon :-)
A slice of Heaven Sweetwater did not disappoint
We had a wonder trip got to see lots of the local sites but really just enjoyed hanging around the house listening to the water and nature.
Even better than advertised
The cabin really does have everything for you to enjoy this quiet piece of the Earth. We spent a lot of time in the back yard and around the grounds playing with the dogs, wading in the river while fishing, and sitting by the river just listening to the water. Pleasantly surprised with how remote the setting feels. There is also an outside shower which made it easy to clean the dogs before going back into the house. Easy day trips to any hikes/activities in the area, including Shenandoah National Park. 20 min to Luray if you need anything in town.
Beautiful location; beautiful, well-appointed home; beautiful scenery. Calm and quite, comfortable, cozy. Convenient for trips to Blue-Ridge Parkway and activities therein, and, of course, to Luray Caverns
Lester & Andrea (and Linus, the pooch).
