We have just spent over a month at Mary Ann's 'Garden Hideaway' as a base for exploring Santa Monica and the Los Angeles area. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there. The apartment is small but well-designed to include all the facilities we needed; plenty of closet space, a well-equipped kitchen, a good bathroom and a bedroom with a large and very comfortable bed. The location is quiet and the second-floor windows overlook a well-stocked garden.
We didn't hire a car but found a very extensive bus network took us everywhere we wanted to go. Seniors could go anywhere on the 'Big Blue Bus' network for just 50 cents a ride whilst the red Metro buses only charged Seniors 25 cents a ride 'off-peak' and 55 cents a ride during rush hours. Bus rides took us to Malibu, Redondo Beach, Downtown L.A., the San Fernando Valley as well as Beverly Hills and Hollywood Blvd. We also recorded some 230 miles on our pedometer!
We enjoyed a great winter holiday and found the Mary Ann's Garden Hideaway a very agreeable place to stay at, for which we thank her.
2 days after arriving in this piece of paradise, I decided to make a deposit to come back , not for one month but for 2 next Winter. I didn't hesitate to submit my first deposit. The neibourhood is safe and close to the beach, downtown , churches ,supermarkets , bus lines and the new train . No car necessary. The studio condo is well appointed extremely clean. The garden is a great place to just relax and read. I was personally greeted by Mary Ann her self who lives in a beautiful home on the the property. She is right on your doorstep soon as you make a request. Retired senior from Canada.
This is the second time I've stayed at the Garden Hide Away for a month. The location is perfect with Montana Street half a block away with shops, restaurants and of course Whole foods. I didn't have a car and traveled by bus and metro. Public transportation is at the end of the street and so convenient. The property itself is lovely with a beautiful gardens and chairs and tables you can use. The unit is very cute and clean with all amenities you could need-a French flair to the decor. The owner Mary Ann is great-very helpful, can answer any questions and has wonderful suggestions. My stays there have been perfect and I'm looking forward to my third visit back.
Excellent location. We had no car and had no problem using public transport. The pictures show the studio correctly although the kitchen especially is very old. They also do not show that, in the middle studio that we occupied, you had to keep the shutters closed as the neighbors passed by the windows and door on a narrow balcony to the stairs. Also, we slept with eyemasks all month as the lights lit up the garden all night and the light filtered through the shutters.
The shower head is too low for a woman or man of approximately 1.80 meters.
We had a very enjoyable time and all'of this did not spoil our holiday.
The suite is ideal for a comfortable stay in Santa Monica. A block to the Montana Village - but tucked away in a garden courtyard seemingly miles from the noise, crowds and traffic of LA. I can't imagine a better location or more appealing apartment. This is everything you need for a quality vacation in Santa Monica. Check the Aero Theatre for retrospective movie nights - you might meet a star or two from the golden years of Hollywood...or Ben Affleck.

This was my first stay in this rental property, and I had a terrific experience. For the past 5 years, I have stayed in a different Home Away property in Santa Monica a few blocks away (at Montana and 14th) and I was honestly a little hesitant to try a new place. I am really glad I did. Even though this rental is a bit smaller than what I'm used to, it didn't matter in the least. The unit is tucked away (along with a few others) in a separate building in the backyard of a beautiful home on 17th Street in the heart of what is arguably the best neighborhood in Santa Monica. The studio is clean, nicely decorated, and has everything you need. There are supermarkets, restaurants, and all kinds of shops within easy walking distance -- and if you like to walk as much as I do, then you can enjoy a nice long stroll to the ocean/beach. The only minor downside is the parking: anyone can park on this block of 17th Street -- no parking permits are required -- which means it can be challenging, at certain times, to find a spot nearby. That being said, I stayed in this unit for five weeks and I only experienced this problem a handful of times. (I had to park a few blocks away a couple of times, and I had to drive around the area for 15 minutes before I found an open parking spot on two other occasions.) Other than this one issue, though, everything about this property is perfection. It really felt like a "home away from home," and I really hope I have the chance to return soon.
