Bennington Trail Retreat
This bright and sunny 3 bedroom brook-side country cottage with 2 bedroom guest house on 13 acres in the Monadnock region sleeps 6-12 comfortably. The house is simply but comfortably furnished with everything you need while away from home. In winter, hike, x-country ski, or snowmobile from the front door. In summer, listen to the babbling brook from the large screened-in wrap-around porches, private deck, or spacious yard, or swim in beautiful Lake Whittemore a short walk away. The house is located at the beginning of the Bennington Trail, giving access to many beautiful hiking trails, several that take you to the summit of Crotched Mountain.
The house is ideally located within 5 miles of skiing or golfing at Crotched Mountain and kayaking or fishing on the Contoocook River, Powdermill Pond, or Otter Lake in Greenfield State Park. Peterborough and its many recreational and cultural attractions is only 20 minutes away, while Mount Monadnock and the city of Keene are both a short 45 minute drive.
The house is equipped with two kayaks, lawn games like croquet, beach toys and chairs, sleds, cross country skis, and games for your use.

We attended a Ski Championship at Crotched Mountain the first weekend in March. A group of racers, support staff (coach and race officials) and families spent the long weekend at the Brookside Cottage. The location was perfect, close to the ski area, yet in a New Hampshire town, not a resort. It was great to have a kitchen for breakfasts and dinners, with some of the others involved in the race joining our crew for dinner. Even though it was March, we were able to grill on the screened porch! We rented both the main and the guest houses and were quite comfortable. The main house feels like an old farm house and the guest house is more modern. Each has its own charm. When not skiing was nice to take walks or run through the woods near the house and enjoy New England forests. We would not hesitate to stay here again!
Great location, beautiful, quiet surroundings and comfortable accommodations. Would highly recommend this rental!
We chose this location as it was close to our son's camp, and we loved it.
The area is beautiful, the house was great, and the screened in porch was perfect for sitting and enjoying the sound of the brook while reading when the day was done.
It was 100°+ for the first couple of days we were there. There is one window a/c in the master bedroom on the first floor. We just kept the doors closed to the upstairs, and our son slept on the couch. It cooled the downstairs enough to be comfortable. We're also from FL, so this was not a big deal for us. May want to consider this if you need central air. The next few nights it was more than cool enough to keep the windows open.
Yes, a few things need to be updated, but everything worked just fine. We were barely in the house anyway, as we went traveling around. Crotched mountain is right down the road, as is a small beach (we really didn't want to go swimming though). I suggest you walk around the towns of Peterborough and Keene, and drive a little further south to visit Cathedral of the Pines. The twin mountains were close enough for a short day trip. Brattleboro, VT is also close by. There is cable and.WI-FI, which is great as cell service is spotty, even on our Verizon phones.
My cons, couldn't really find any. I am used to older houses, so the steep stairs didn't really surprise us, as that's just the way these old homes are. We did have a small issue first day, and the owner was quick to take care of it. We recommended this home to family and friends. We've also decided if our son goes back to camp next year, we'll gladly rent the home again. It was perfect for our four night stay.
This was a nice little house with a big yard and a brook around the house. There were 4 adults and 2 children ( ages 6 and 2). The kids loved running around and catching frogs. We had such a great time we are already planning for next year.
My family recently convened in Hancock, NH for a wedding - and ten of us as well as two children stayed at the Brookside Cottage on a beautiful wooded, quiet street close to town. The main house and guest house were fine for our needs but furnishings could have been a little nicer given the price. The porches and deck are wonderful - spent most of our time outside - nice big backyard. The guest house is more comfortable than the main house - very spacious and better furnished - but it sure could use a basic kitchen. If you stay in Bennington - plan ahead - store close early and the grocery store is ten miles away in Antrim.
Just as described !! Rural but not remote. Clean, comfortable, cozy house. Close enough to other villages and towns to enjoy day trips. Great skiing nearby. Fully stocked kitchen. Great owners.
