Overview

Stratford House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-5)

Architects: Shim-Sutcliffe.

The house is in the centre of a charming Victorian/Edwardian city, overlooking Lake Victoria and the Stratford parklands for the best view in town.

INTRODUCTION:

Tadao Ando was the inspiration for the architecture. The aesthetic is modernist through and through; and materials are poured-in-place concrete, steel, wood (mainly cedar and Douglas fir), cement board, and glass. Completion was in 2001.

The beautifully-appointed living room has a wood-burning fireplace; throughout the house are the finest examples of modernist furniture and lighting. In the master bedroom, you get the first light of the day; and the view from the living room offers the perfect sunsets.

ACCOMMODATION:

There are two bedrooms, each with an en suite bathroom, and there is a powder room on the main level. Each bedroom has a queen-sized bed, which sleeps two. There is a large, semi-industrial kitchen; a dining room that seats up to nine, and a living room that comfortably seats eight.

At the back of the house there is a water-lily pond, and a small, romantic garden. The house is across the street from an extensive park system.

There is parking for two cars. Breakfast service is included, and daily housekeeping is provided. Room service is available from Rundles when the restaurant is open for business. Picnic baskets are available for guests, with advance notice.

The house does not have an elevator, and therefore is not suitable for anyone who cannot climb stairs.

LOCAL AREA:

Stratford, Ontario is on a human scale, which makes it a walkers’ paradise. The House is in the centre of town, and everything is nearby.

Visitors to Stratford attend the Stratford Festival, North America’s largest classical repertory theatre. To see what will be on stage in 2016, please visit:

Review of Rundles Restaurant:

'On the bank of the River Avon, Rundles is an idyllic spot for pre-theatre dining in Stratford. The room, all grey cement and pale wood, feels like a Mies van der Rohe–designed spa. Chef Neil Baxter, who’s been head chef since 1981, has a flair for the dramatic, in a good way. The tender poached lobster with salmon roe, cubed cucumber, yuzu jelly and dill oil sparkles like a mosaic of multicoloured sea glass and tastes bright and clean. Flawless panfried rib-eye showcases classic training and finesse. At the end of the meal, the server suggests “the famous lemon tart.” The brûléed concoction, studded with toasted pistachios and sided with smooth orange sorbet, lives up to its recommendation.' About James Morris

Details, details, details.

James Morris purchased this house in 2000

Why James Morris chose Ontario

Stratford is on a very human scale, which makes it a walkers’ paradise. Rundles Morris House is right in the centre of town, and everything is within easy walking distance. If you are looking for a quiet getaway, Stratford is one of the best small towns in Canada to retreat to. What makes it unique is that, although it is a quiet country town, it has culinary and theatrical offerings one would expect to find in only much larger places. Stratford is located less than two hours’ drive from Toronto, and three hours from both Detroit or Buffalo. Also, with international airports located all around us, one can easily fly to almost anywhere in the world.

We like the peace and quiet, and the beauty of the town itself. Moreover, Stratford has some of the sophistication of a city without the inevitable rat-race that accompanies it. Gastronomy in Stratford and area is unparalleled. There are many farmers and producers of note located just outside the city limits. Stratford, as a food destination, ranks as one of the best in Canada.

What makes this house unique

The Rundles Morris House comes with a private chef and housekeeper, and personalized concierge service. You can leave your car parked during your stay, and walk everywhere in Stratford. Sleep at night with little or no noise. One of the best restaurants in Canada is located next door, Rundles Restaurant (opened in 1977).

Guestbook comments from the owner

Is this the most eccentric weird place I’ve ever stayed in? Yes. Is the food fabulous and the welcome its equal? Yes. Would I come here again? I’ll leave my phone number. Thanks!

Home is incredible.

  • 5 of 5

Everything about our stay at Rundles Morris House was exquisite. The home is incredible. It's all of the thoughtful details that make it so luxurious (the soaps, the linens, the wood for the fire). It was the perfect weekend - we felt so spoiled. Thank you, thank you!

Fabulous stay

  • 5 of 5

Wonderful accommodation, fabulous restaurant and perfect location. If you can imagine having a spacious and well-appointed house (amazing kitchen, great entertainment area, 2 fantastic bedrooms) next door to a restaurant with a superb menu and excellent wine list all in a perfect setting of Stratford to enjoy theatre, local shops and a very enjoyable walk along the river. Plenty of little touches that make this a very special ‘getaway’. A real treat!

'This small Ontario city is home to the Stratford Shakespeare Festival (North America’s largest classical repertory theatre). However, design lovers will want to visit for the Rundles Morris House. A contemporary residence, designed by Shim-Sutcliffe Architects, it’s a sublime combination of materials, in this case concrete, cedar and Douglas fir. The property is spread over four levels, with a central atrium drenching the house in natural light.' [Wallpaper* City Guide Toronto.]
