3 Story Oceanside House Available for your perfect Outer Banks Vacation.
This Salvo property has been a home and place for friends and renters to enjoy since 2005. A saltbox design with exposed beams and vaulted ceilings throughout, the home features new hardwood flooring and a tastefully decorated interior. Large sliding glass doors and windows provide plenty of natural light and ventilation: when open, they allow the refreshing ocean air and uniquely dramatic light of the Outer Banks to permeate the house. Previous visitors to the property say this aspect, coupled with the home’s airy design, create an energy that is both relaxing and inspiring.
Located in the oceanside community of 'Hatteras Colony,” the residence is on a cul-de-sac with no through traffic. The quiet neighborhood location is perfect for walking, biking, and bird watching, and the substantial backyard is the ideal place to throw a frisbee, play some ball, or catch fireflies. Three elevated decks and a screened-in porch invite après-beach conversation and cocktails, a quiet morning with a new book, or an evening barbeque. The home also boasts modest ocean views from its upper level. Deeded access to both the beach and sound makes getting to the water easy; as does the nearby boat ramp, access to which is also included in the rental. So too is an on-site storage locker, perfect for securing outdoor and sporting gear.
Inside, you’ll find common rooms appointed with leather furniture and traditional Hatteras décor, including goods made by local artisans.
Simple and bright, the bedrooms feature organic cotton sheets and plush comforters for those spring or fall nights when you need extra warmth. Our spacious kitchen is stocked with china and cookware perfect for making a casual breakfast, weekend brunch or candlelit dinner. A spiral staircase leads guests to the loft.
Ensuring a memorable and fun-filled stay is of the utmost importance to us. And so included in your rental rate is also a personal concierge service designed to help you plan and get the most out of your vacation. For an additional fee, we can also arrange grocery delivery or items such as a rollaway bed or sea kayaks, surfboards, paddleboards or other sporting related items.
We know you’ll be delighted with the accommodations and location, and we look forward to making your stay in the Outer Banks exceptional.

My name is Colin Gowland. I was born in Canada and spent most of my life there, traveling for sports interests when I could. In 2002, I moved to the Outer Banks to pursue a career in kiteboarding. While there, my wife and I purchased the house and resided there until 2007, when we relocated to Puerto Rico. I now reside in Maine, where I work in the yachting industry. I enjoy sailing as well as most watersports; I also love music-- both playing and listening. I'm very fond of the OBX and return whenever I can. The landscape there brings me a lot of peace and seemingly, the more I look, the more I find. This is a magical spot: one of my absolute favorites, and I sincerely hope you enjoy your time there. It's truly priceless!
The Owner purchased this house in 2005
This home was initially my residence. We chose the Outer Banks because of its long, pleasant seasons and its unique geography: the combination of the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound create seemingly unlimited opportunities for recreation. After spending a good amount of time there, I discovered that there was much more than kiteboarding, surfing, windsurfing, beach walking, sunsets, sunrises, friends, laughs, biking and cocktails. There's also fishing!
Low traffic, safe neighborhood for walking and biking, beach and sound access, screened-in porch, multiple decks, kiteboarding, surfing, windsurfing, sailing, sports equipment storage, ice cream, cocktails, fishing, sunsets, sunrises, running, laughing, eating, being merry, suntans, sunburns, lemonade, sea shells, seashores, lighthouses, life saving station history, reading, relaxing, writing, sleeping, loving.
First impressions are the most important. We pulled into the drive to see a broken plastic deck chair, toys and holes children had dug under the stairs/deck. The grill was at the end of the drive. Don’t move it or it will fall apart. Enter the house on the bedroom level. The rooms aren’t set up or look like the pictures. The dresser in one bedroom is missing a handle. The other dresser looks homemade and the drawers don’t work well. There aren’t any handles. Each bedroom has a tv, 1 new and 1 old. There aren’t any cable outlets in the rooms. One bedroom sliding door doesn’t open or close/seal properly. It rained heavily the first two nights there. Water came in the bathroom’s exhaust vent on this level. We had to put a pail under it to catch the water. The exhaust fan doesn’t work. Rains made the yard usable. The yard was flooded the entire week there. Moving to the living area floor you have to climb a spiral staircase. It is pretty but narrow and steep. It’s had to walk down. If not careful you will bump your head. There isn’t a curtain on the west side sliding door. The neighbors have a clear view. On this level water came down the bathroom wall from the rains. Dining room chairs are not the same as in the pictures and are mismatched. One chair had a broken spindle. Refrigerator is missing the freezer handle, crisper trays won’t stay in place and the ice maker doesn’t shut off. The stove exhaust hood is not securely in place and the fan doesn’t work. Porch screens have holes in them. Climb the same narrow spiral staircase to the third floor bedroom. There is a window AC unit that will not cool this area. It was in the 90’s when we were there. This area did not get cool enough to use as a bedroom. Screen door was ripped. The entire house is fitted with electric base board heaters. Most of the covers are off or hanging off. This is a potential safety issue.
Saltbox is a great home a short walk to the beach. It is divided into 3 levels allowing for privacy when you want it but with ample living space on the middle floor.to congregate together. The area is charming, safe and caters to vacationers but is very low key and not commercial. The beaches in the area are great. The contact was very helpful. THe company he uses to manage the property were available and responsive to our questions too. They provide a list of what will be available so we came well prepared. Saltbox is one of the smaller homes in the area but we found it very comfortable for 5 adults. I would definitely stay here again!!
This was our first visit to OBX and the Saltbox was a prime location. We enjoyed the 3rd floor deck each morning and the the west side provided glimpses of the sunsets on the sound. I would wake each morning to catch the sunrise and out to the dock on the sound for the sunset. I got some phenomenal photos! The house was perfect for our family of 3, the woodwork throughout the house is charming. The only minor thing I had was the AC unit filters were in desperate need of cleaning. So I cleaned them all well so they ran more efficiently. I was missing a "dust pan" as I was a bit obsessive to keep the beautiful wood floors clean. We fell in love with Salvo and hope to return again! Thank you Colin for sharing your lovely place with us!
This was our first time to OBX and it was a great experience. The Saltbox was perfect for my families needs; 2 adults, toddler and dog. Plenty of space, quiet street and close to everything. Only a short walk to both the beach and sound. We would definitely book Saltbox again the next time we visit the area.
This house worked out fairly well for us due to the layout for two couples and us having a kid. It is just a few houses back from a beach path. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen was fully stocked. However, if you have trouble with stairs or have small children, this might not be your best option. From the photos online, I thought there were only spiral stairs going from the second floor to the third floor, but they actually go all the way down to the first floor. I was terrified watching my three year old climb these. In fact, she fell off the stairs close to the bottom though (thank God). Also, the stairs on the outside of the house going from the first floor to the second floor, were also scary due to big gaps in-between each step and seemingly to be rather old. The outdoor shower left something to be desired in comparison to others in the neighborhood. The price was good for the area though and overall the house was nice.
This was our first visit to the OBX and the Saltbox was the ideal place to stay. The house is bright, comfortable and inviting, with lots of balconies to sit and enjoy the views. It was well appointed and the location was perfect. It was a five minute walk to the beach and a very short drive to the Sound. The beaches here are inspiring, uncrowded, soft sand and warm water (though occasionally a rough surf). The central proximity of the Saltbox allowed us to make easy day trips to Hatteras, Ocracoke, Nags Head, etc. The kitchen was well stocked with cookware and we also used the outdoor grill though we also ventured out to a few local restaurants (Top Dog Cafe was our favorite). We also loved using the outdoor shower. Lots of friendly people in the neighborhood which is dotted with beautiful homes. We had to call the concierge service for the Saltbox after we arrived because we couldn't get the TV to turn on, and they came very quickly and resolved the problem straight away. Everyone here is very friendly and helpful. We brought our own groceries with us (remember to bring things like salt, pepper, cooking oil, etc.) but if you need to get a few things, there are some shops in the immediate area. We bought two beach chairs at a local shop and because we were flying home, we left them at the house for future guests. If you need additional beach supplies, there are loads of shops everywhere where you can buy things pretty cheaply. Overall, a delightful introduction to the OBX. We loved the Saltbox and will definitely book it again when we return to the area.
