Great Spot for an NYC 1st Timer

It sure was tough to decide on which place we should rent when my husband and I were planning our 1st trip to NYC in late Sept 2014. With a multitude of options, and not a great feel for the "lay of the land" in NYC, we finally decided that this place seemed to check all of our boxes. At a rate of $250 USD/night, this was a tough bill to swallow - but when comparing this apartment to the hotel options in the area, it quickly became apparent that this was the way to go in terms of value.

LOCATION: This apartment is perfect for the folks that want to be close to the action but quickly able to escape to a quiet unit away from it all. Close to subway, close to a gazillion restaurants/bars including the Seinfeld Soup Nazi and Carnegie Deli, close to theatres, close to grocery stores, close to Times Square, close to the harbour for cruises, close to Jon Stewart and Dave Letterman's studios - we truly felt like we were in the best spot we could be for walkability and selection. While I still recommend grabbing a Metro pass to go further out to places like the Brooklyn Flea, and to allow you to save your "walking feet" for the beauty of the Met, Natural History Museum and Central Park, one could certainly use "2 feet and a heartbeat" to move around to many of the attractions that are not far from this spot. I would stay in this same spot again for the ease of getting around.

We did find that the shower was a bit unbecoming due to some discoloration that seemed consistent with black mold, the unit was otherwise clean and well equipped. We found a second set of bath towels in a closet - much needed at the 3 day mark. Bed was comfy. Wi fi worked. TV was great - loved watching the Daily Show and Letterman later in the evening after attending the tapings! Doormen were very helpful when it came to questions about getting around. The owner was also very helpful when I was in contact with him through the booking process and once we got there, ( he was quickly sure that I got the WiFi password I needed and was kind to accommodate a request to stay late in the day due to a late flight out as the apartment was not booked on the day of our departure). Our deposit was returned very promptly after we left which was greatly appreciated.

NYC TIPS: DO ELEVEN MADISON PARK and DO "SLEEP NO MORE" - best day of our trip

DO have FUN - we filled 6 days easily.

I noticed this is a LGTBQ friendly neighbourhoood

Excellent Mid-Town Condo

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this apartment. First of all, absolutely great location. Just 2-3 blocks from the A-C-E subway line and Columbus Circle and the Park are just a few blocks away. We walked to all of the shows on 42nd to 46th Street. Great restaurants up and down 8th and 9th Avenues. The apartment is easy in and easy out, with no elevator or stair issues. Second, the inside of the apartment is great. Everything you could need and more. Full, high-end kitchen with all appliances and utensils. Bedroom is separate from the living room which is great if one of you wants to stay up and watch the big screen. Bedroom faces an extremely quiet court yard, and we slept late and peacefully!! We will definitely try to book this apartment on our next trip to NYC.

Hell's Kitchen Apartment Has Lots of Affordable Restaurants and Convenient Location

This property is a leased apartment, not an owned property. I had a rental agreement for 3 weeks in October, 2014.

When I arrived on a cold day the apartment was unheated, dirty and the bathroom had mold on the bath/shower enclosure and was missing 3 out of 9 bulbs and the remaining bulbs were miss matched. The apartment is cluttered with surplus electronic equipment. It also smelled of air deodorizer. It is not well lighted in any of the rooms and kitchen. Only after the lights were replaced in the bathroom was the bathroom well lighted. The blind in the bedroom was broken. I contacted the "owner" who came over and told him it was unacceptable. He told me that if I did not accept the apartment I would have to forfeit the rent for one week under the contract I had signed with him through VRBO.

The "owner" replaced all the light bulbs in the bathroom, got a space heater, provided appropriate cleaning supplies and after 4 days got someone to clean the apartment after 4 days of living in the dirty apartment and bought new towels for the bathroom and bed linens to replace the brown and old bed linens.

There is no comfortable reading chair. There is a large leather covered couch.

While the small kitchen has new appliances and has been updated, the lighting is dim and the counter space is cluttered with appliances while nice are not especially useful. There is no toaster, but there is a panini press and a large counter oven when a perfectly fine range and oven is furnished by the apartment owner.

The apartment is generally quiet as it faces a courtyard and has nice light in the living room from two large windows.

There are many good affordable ethnic restaurants in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood near the apartment. The doorman and modernized lobby provide a sense of security. The property is convenient to the subway and walking distance from Columbus Circle, the theater district and Central Park.

When the coffee maker leaked the "owner" brought over his personal coffee maker. He really tried hard the make amends for the apartment and his property management deficiencies. It is hoped that he will be responsive to the needs of the future clients and not just take advantage of the demand for short term housing in New York City marketplace.

I would not recommend this property given the many options presented on VRBO. I would request a current time dated photograph of any future rentals under VRBO.

Owner's Response: Dear John You arrived to the apartment on Oct 4th, New York law states that heating should be provided after Oct 15th. Not even for a luxury building like this one, is it possible to provide heat before that date. I showed up right away and solved (not after 4 days) the problems you mentioned, and I told you that I cannot change NY law, and I was willing to refund your payment (minus one week, that is what the contract says about cancellation, especially considering that you were complaining about something I can’t change). Regardless, you decided to stay. Of the 3 weeks you stayed, you took the time to send me extensive emails every day complaining about new things. You complained about the decoration,(exactly the same that you can see on the pics) the color of the towels, the color of the sheets, etc. and you even mentioned in an extremely racist way that in this country you do things in a different way than mine. Every day I went to solve all your requests, and every day I asked you if there was anything else that you needed, so that you could start enjoying this magnificent city. Every day you said that you were finally satisfied with the apartment, but as soon as I left, you again spent many hours writing extremely long emails, and trying to find new problems. I will keep putting all my effort in providing my future tenants an extremely comfortable and well located vacation home. Luckily, this is just an extremely particular review from an extremely particular tenant. All the best

Good Location!

We had a great stay in this apartment while working at the Javits Center. There was a ton of delicious food right around the corner, markets, and anything you could possibly want/need!

The apartment was clean, equipped, and the doorman was very friendly. We would def. stay here in the future!!!!!

Tip for the owner- Get some new pillows!! The pillows in the apartment were very flat and uncomfortable. Also shower curtain could use an update!

THE place to stay in Midtown!

We chose this apartment because of the excellent reviews and proximity to our son's apartment. Everything is as stated in the description. This is a wonderful, unbelievably quiet apartment that is well-maintained in a doorman building. Everything you could want is included. The owner was helpful both before and during our stay. The location is ideal-walking distance to everything midtown, including Central Park, MOMA, Intrepid, shopping, and more. You could eat in fabulous restaurants for a whole month within a 5 block radius and never repeat! (Mee Noodles, Kodama, Georgios Country Grill, and Eatery-always Eatery- are favorites.) The subways are a few blocks away as are several markets for food. All in all, we had a fabulous stay and will definitely return!
