Overview

About the property

4 bedrooms, 2 full baths, sleeps 10, outdoor shower, upstairs kitchenette

Built as the Queen Elizabeth Guest House in 1940, this quaint, spacious, and historic house has a natural charm. It offers an alternative to the more contemporary houses that are available in the nearby beach locations. The house is equipped with beautiful hard-wood floors, and wonderful light, comfortable sofas, family heirloom furniture, 100% cotton sheets, down comforters, plenty of dining room chairs, well-stocked pantry, kitchen dining nook, and shady side. One of the downstairs bedrooms has a king and the other has a queen size bed. Small upstairs bedroom now has a queen-sized bed. The bunk room has a bunk bed (queen on bottom, single on top), plus a full-sized bed. Kitchenette upstairs. The yard is completely enclosed by a white picket fence, with plenty of space for children and pets to run. A newly built, completely enclosed outdoor shower is great for washing off after the beach. There is a large magnolia tree with a swing in the front yard and lovely landscaping around the house.

Another highlight of our home is that it can easily accommodate 2 families. The main kitchen is downstairs. The upstairs kitchen is simple but includes a small fridge, microwave, toaster oven and coffee maker.

The village of Manteo is delightful, with plenty of activities in town, as well as additional activities throughout the northern Outer Banks. Our house is in a quiet neighborhood within a pleasant, five-minute walk of coffee shops, restaurants, bookstore, movie theater, shopping, Roanoke Island Festival Park, NC Maritime Center, eco-kayaking, and the waterfront docks with a replica of a 16th century English ship. Located in the center of historic Roanoke Island on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, this Nantucket-style village is connected to the NC Aquarium, The Island Farm, the Elizabethan Gardens and Fort Raleigh National Park by a delightful and meandering bike and walking path. The house is a 10-minute drive to the Nags Head beaches, a 20-minute drive to the Wright Brothers' First Flight Site, and convenient to journeys to the famous Corolla, Bodie Island, Hatteras and Ocracoke Island lighthouses.

Historic Downtown Manteo has become a popular location for weddings and family events.

About your Hosts: Anne, Robert and family: Robert Long and Anne Mandeville-Long live in Chapel Hill, NC where Robert is a performing arts building design consultant and Anne operates her Moss Garden Nursery School. Robert spent his first twenty-five summers living in Manteo with his parents, brother and sister, all of whom have been involved with the annual production of The Lost Colony Outdoor Drama. Robert portrayed the infant Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the New World, on her commemorative birthday when he was five months old. In all, Robert spent seventeen summers working with the Lost Colony production.

Robert and Anne blended their young families more than a dozen years ago and have many wonderful memories of visits to Manteo with their combined seven children. The family's two dogs, Maya and Luci, love their visits to Manteo.

Robert and Anne bought the 201 Uppowoc house in 2008 as soon as it came on the market. In addition to the lovely ambiance and the ideal location of the house, the property is adjacent to the back yard of his brother William's vacation home on Sir Walter Street. Having been a regular visitor to Manteo and Roanoke Island for his entire life, Robert knew that having a vacation rental in this picturesque town would be the fulfillment of a dream. Anne, who grew up on the Connecticut coast, has also grown to love Manteo and the Outer Banks.

For more than seventy years, the house at 201 Uppowoc has evoked a sense of calm and simple elegance for its residents and visitors. Located within the Old Town Historic District of Manteo, the house provides an excellent starting point for visits on foot or by bicycle to a variety of wonderful offerings including coffee shops, stores, galleries and restaurants, in addition to the longest-running family-owned movie theatre in North Carolina.

Why Anne Mandeville-Long chose Historic District

Robert and Anne bought the 201 Uppowoc house in 2008 as soon as it came on the market. In addition to the lovely ambiance and the ideal location of the house, the property is adjacent to the back yard of his brother William's vacation home on Sir Walter Street. Having been a regular visitor to Manteo and Roanoke Island for his entire life, Robert knew that having a vacation rental in this picturesque town was the fulfillment of a dream. Anne, who grew up on the Connecticut coast, has also grown to love Manteo and the Outer Banks.

What makes this house unique

Our house is located at the intersection of Uppowoc and Agona streets in Old Town Manteo. We love the proximity of the house to all the amenities available within easy walking distance. We love evening strolls on the waterfront boardwalks with our dogs, and morning visits to the Coffee Shop. Also within walking distance are the long-time family-owned Pioneer movie theatre and all the offerings available at Roanoke Island Festival Park.

The house is spacious yet cozy, with plenty of light, wood floors and a special breakfast nook. Uppowoc House is unique in itself as it offers an alternative to the typical rental properties available throughout the Outer Banks. Visitors have described the upstairs as a 'bonus' with its bunk room and kitchenette. And in the warmer months, the outdoor shower is a treat after a visit to the beach. The side porch is a lovely place to sit and enjoy the locals strolling by; walking dogs, kids on skateboards, riding bikes and you might even see a pirate or two taking groups on tours of historic Manteo!

Guestbook comments from the manager

We, a familiy of four people, 2 adults and 2 girls, spent a perfect holiday at this wonderful house. We found a very clean place, perfectly equiped with all utensils a traveller needs to feel at home, the description of the house including photos was perfect, we received a wonderful manual to use about the house and the surroundings.

We spent many hours relaxing at the house, went to the Saturday Farmer's Market, paddleboard tours, Kayaking with the recommended company to Alligator Nature Reserve, visited the big dunes and the Wright-Museum at Kitty Hawk, went swimming on the beaches nearby finding great conditions, watched sunsets near the old bridge, had great times at North Carolina Aquarium and Island Farm Museum.

It would have been easy to find more actvities for another 2 weeks!

We really would like to come back, there would be no other choice than this vacation home!

A wonderful home...

  • 5 of 5

As described, this wonderful home in Manteo was a pleasure to stay in. We arrived to an immaculate house, beautifully decorated and a great layout for our group of my husband and I and 4 young adults. We could walk to town each morning for coffee... explore the lovely town of Manteo and come back to read on the porch.

While we were there for a wedding, we would love to come back for another visit. (And when there were technical difficulties in my accessing information in my VRBO account, Anne was wonderful in e mailing me all info needed ASAP as well as making a follow up call to make sure all was OK. Thanks again Anne!)

Best of the Best. Everything you dreamed of

  • 5 of 5

It was my Daughters Wedding at 108 Budleigh. It was a short walk. Hair and makeup in the dining room. Room for 8 girls. Kitchen perfect. Room outside to enjoy Manteo. Upstairs bedrooms perfect for the young. Everything was perfect. I can't wait to spend time next time on the tree swing. So clean. It is truly a Home Away from Home. I would give it 10 stars location. Space. Clean. No clutter.Great Bedding. Kitchen well stocked with all tools you would need. Thanks for sharing your property.

Wonderfully pleasant

  • 5 of 5

Myself & my husband and our grown son & daughter and their families stayed for a long weekend (5 adults and 4 children). There was plenty of space. We were immediately comfortable and loved this house. It is clean and well equipped. It is also convenient to anything you want to in Manteo. I highly recommend this house to anyone.

Charming, quiet neighborhood, clean, vintage, comfortable, great location

  • 5 of 5

The home was easy to find, and entry directions were very clear. This is a charming four bedroom house in a very quiet neighborhood. The quaint downtown area and shopping provided us with an afternoon of entertainment. A few blocks away from the sound. Very walkable. Also, Not too far away from the Outer Banks beachs (About 15 minute drive to beach). We would visit again.

Beautiful Home

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I stayed here for a wedding in Nags Head. It is the perfect location! Very close to shopping, coffee, and restaurants. The home is beautiful, and very comfortably fits 10 people. The outdoor shower is pretty cool too! I would definitely recommend this house for families or groups.

A little slice of heaven

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four had a fabulous stay. The beds and sheets are comfy and the house had everything we needed. The backyard, swing and side porch were great for lazy mornings and afternoon breaks from the beach. We absolutely loved being able to walk to town every night for dinner, ice cream and to the enjoy the playground. On Tuesday nights in the summer, you can take a free sailboat ride at the marina in town. It was a highlight for sure. Many thanks and we'll be back!
