Overview

Mill Valley House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

Located steps from the heart of downtown Mill Valley, this home has been featured in more than 100 magazines for its sheer simplicity and low environmental footprint. Rarely will you find such an inspiring space that combines modern design, all the amenities, and a fabulous location!

On the first floor, the dining room leads to a designer kitchen on one-side and opens to an outdoor deck on the other, overlooking Mill Valley with a glimpse of the San Francisco skyline.

The living room features modular furniture which you can arrange based on your activities, as well as an entertainment center which includes an Apple TV with iTunes/iPod connection, surround sound and a multi-room speaker system. Off the living room, a half-bath helps with every day convenience.

Upstairs, three bedrooms share a European-style bathroom with an open shower. The master bedroom has a queen-size bed and walk-in closet, and the two other bedrooms a twin bed each.

We love our home's simplicity, straight forward floor plan and sun-splashed deck and so will you!

In the warmer months, you can open the french doors and the deck becomes an extension of the interior - Great to read a book or entertain. And because it extends into the oak tree in front of the house, it's as if you were staying in a tree house.

Deers, squirrels, hummingbirds, etc. can be easily spotted on the property and yet, it's located just one block away from the downtown.

The property is located within steps of the Outdoor Art Club (events, weddings, film festival), the downtown's boutiques, the Depot Bookstore, restaurants (Italian, Bistro, Sushi, Steak), cafes, ice cream shops, theaters, and the famous Sweetwater Music hall.

You'll be a 10 minutes walk from the redwoods of Old Mill Park (redwood trees, picnic tables, creek, play structure, start of the Dipsea steps/trail, award-winning library) and from Boyle Park (picnic tables, public tennis courts, creek and play structure).

By car, you'll be 5 minutes from the Mill Valley Recreation Center (events, grass field, community pool and classes), 12 minutes from the Golden Gate, 15 minutes from San Francisco, 15 minutes from the majestic Redwoods of Muir Woods, 30 minutes from Stinson Beach, 45 minutes from Point Reyes (beautiful scenery and artisan foods), Sonoma (wine tasting), Berkeley (cultural events), and 1 hour from the Napa Valley wine region.

You could not have hoped to find a better location and we're excited to host you!

About Scott Johnson

We are a family of four, with two boys. Scott works as a management consultant in the field of sustainability, while Bea is the author of the book and blog Zero Waste Home. This is our home - and we only rent on the weekends and during school holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring and Summer breaks).

Scott Johnson purchased this house in 2007

Why Scott Johnson chose The Bay Area

We wanted a home in downtown Mill Valley to be within walking distances of amenities so our kids could grow up to be independent.

What makes this house unique

We love our home's simplicity and location! When we entered it for the first time, we instantly fell in love with its simple floor plan and sun-splashed deck.

In the warmer months, we open the french doors and the deck becomes on extension of our interior. It's great to simply read a book or to entertain. And because it extends into the oak tree in front of the house, it's as if we were living in a tree house. We have deers, squirrels, hummingbirds, etc. visiting the property and yet, we're located just one block away from the downtown.

We are within steps of the Outdoor Art Club (events, weddings, film festival), the downtown's boutiques, the Depot Bookstore, restaurants, cafes, ice cream shops, theaters, the Sweetwater Music hall, and the award-winning library. Scott and the boys, who are on the high school moutain biking team, also enjoy living at the base of Mt. Tam, home of world class mountain biking!

By car, we're 12 minutes from the Golden Gate, 15 minutes from San Francisco, 15 minutes from the majestic Redwoods of Muir Woods, 30 minutes from Stinson Beach, 45 minutes from Point Reyes (beautiful scenery and artisan foods), Sonoma (wine tasting), Berkeley (cultural events), and 1 hour from the Napa Valley wine region.

We could not have hoped for a better location!

Perfect Modern Home - Downtown Mill Valley

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying in this beautiful quintessential California-modern home. High-end appliances, impeccably maintained yard and incredible access to downtown Mill Valley. The nuns from the Catholic Church walking past before Mass was too beautiful for words.

Another Great Stay!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying at this beautiful Mill Valley home and I think we enjoyed it even more than the first time. The house is perfectly sized for our family of four and we love its proximity to downtown Mill Valley. We would highly recommend this house and we look forward to revisiting in the future.

Beautiful home and lovely area to explore

  • 5 of 5

We spent a lovely weekend at this unique home and absolutely loved it. I was worried the Zero Waste would be a challenge to my father in law and brother in law but they got into the zone, and it didn't turn out to be an issue at all. There are a lot of stairs up to and inside the house, so I was concerned about for the 86 yr old, but he made it up and down safely thanks to the very sturdy railings and landings for resting.

Our first night was clear with a full moon, romantic but we all slept lightly as the curtains are very sheer or non-existent. Next night was cloudy so we did better.

The kitchen was our favorite part of the house - the refrigerator/freezer and dishwasher drawers were new to me, but I ended up really liking them. There were a few spices and oils available, but otherwise we brought everything we needed for our own breakfasts and lunches. We ate dinner at the Buckeye Roadhouse - great!

I did a lot of walking - very easy to get to Mill Valley and then beyond to the Dipsea Trail steps. There was a walking map of the area in the house that inspired me to find them. We also went Segueing on Angel Island - a truly unique experience!

Unlike most vrbo houses we have rented, this one did not have any games - we were glad to find a deck of cards stashed in one of our bags.

I felt it was a reasonable price for the quality, location, and uniqueness of this home. I was a bit shocked at the cleaning fee, so be sure to check the total price before you commit. Owner was very responsive to questions before and during our stay.

Beautiful Home / Great Location

  • 5 of 5

We spent four nights in this fantastic home during our move from San Francisco to Miami. It was a great way to close out our time in California. The home is beautiful and ideally located just a block or so from downtown Mill Valley. We would definitely stay here again during future visits to Marin.

Beautiful home!

  • 5 of 5

The perfect home for our little girl's weekend get-away. We absolutely loved the aesthetic and the simple zero-waste lifestyle this family lives by. All of us are professional photographers so this home was an absolutely dream to be in! The most gorgeous light and the area was wonderful as well. I would definitely come back to this home in future!

Lovely home in Mill Valley

  • 5 of 5

My family spent a few days in this bright, airy home while exploring Marin as well as visiting friends in the city. From the house, you can quickly walk to the restaurants, shops, and parks in Mill Valley. There was always an available parking space on the narrow street right in front of the house, with many steps leading up to the front door (pack light!). The kitchen is very well appointed with everything necessary to cook and eat in the home, and there are shopping bags available for trips to the market, a very short walk away. We greatly enjoyed the deck with its bountiful lemon trees and little herb garden. We found the minimalist style of the house quite appealing, although must admit we never figured out how to lounge comfortably on the furniture arrangement in the living room... but the beds were super comfy, and the rain shower in the bathroom was divine! it was thought provoking to live "without a trash can". The owner is available and responsive, we would definitely stay here again.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the feedback! We are glad that you enjoyed your stay at our home in Mill Valley. Regarding the lounge furniture: The couch is modular - so if we have the opportunity to host you again, please free to rearrange the sofa pieces to fit your needs! When the four of us watch a movie, we push the pieces around to make a queen size bed and use the pillows and blanket to get cozy. When we have people over for a drink, we use the middle piece as a coffee table, transfer the mirrored platter onto it for drinks, and scatter the other pieces around it for seats. It was a pleasure having you, we hope to host you again!
