Located 45 miles south of Kailua-Kona and 60 miles from Hilo, we offer the wonderful experience of 'Old Hawaii' with its serenity, quiet, and charm. In addition, we are ideally located to allow you to explore both sides of the Big Island. A five minute trip up to the highway takes you to the growing town of Ocean View, with its grocery and hardware stores, restaurants, gas stations, farmers market, and an active community center with library and computer center.

Nearby must-see attractions include the black sand beach at Punalu'u, the green-sand beach and cliffs at South Point, Volcano National Park, and Kula Kai caverns. For the hikers, don't miss walking about 2 ½ miles down to the beach and lagoon at Pohue Bay where you will likely have it to yourselves (especially on a week day). A quick trip to the quaint town of Na'alehu lets you avail yourselves of organically grown local produce, local style restaurants with live music, and a fabulous bakery. Journeying a bit further takes you through lush rain forest to the Kapoho Tidepools with its outstanding snorkeling and abundant sea life.

On the Kona side, you can take time to kayak with the dolphins in Kealakekua Bay and enjoy one of the best snorkeling spots in the state! Of course, you can always head up to Kona or Hilo and enjoy the many sights and experiences they offer and still have plenty of time to return home for dinner on the lanai at sunset.

Hale Maluhia, or ' House of Peace', is at 600' elevation and 2 miles from the coast, providing panoramic ocean views and perfect temperatures and humidity year round. Its unique location at the southern end of the island allows you to experience both fantastic sunsets and sunrises! Because of our low elevation and the cooling trade winds, we are rarely affected by the vog that can affect the Kona Coast. But we are still on the sunny side, where we don't have the rain and the bugs of the Hilo side

Hale Maluhia is 1300 sq. ft. and features an open floor plan with a living area, dining area, breakfast bar, kitchen, and large bath. The entire unit is located on ground level, providing easy access without the need to negotiate stairs. We provide high speed internet. There are two large glass sliding doors providing abundant light and air which open onto the pool and patio area.

With a king size bed, 2 twin beds, and 32' flat screen TV with Directv, it is a great place to relax at the end of a long day of sightseeing and swimming. Four ceiling fans supplement the tradewinds and provide a restful cooling breeze.

The kitchen is open, with a breakfast bar for informal dining. It is well equipped and has oak cabinets. It is ready for you to make your favorite island dishes or just pop something in the microwave for a quick snack. We have tried to provide everything you might need to feel completely at home. If you do need something special, it is usually readily available at the local market.

The pool and spa area is spacious and enclosed by lava rock walls. The 20' x 40' pool is covered to allow for solar heating and is surrounded by tiered concrete decking. A propane fired 5' x 7' spa sits adjacent to the pool for soothing away your tensions at the end of the day. Please note that the guests are responsible for replacing the propane used during their stay. Lounge chairs and a table set allow for relaxation and seating and a gas barbecue is available for outdoor dining. Please note that this area is shared with the owner and his wife living upstairs.

To foster the spirit of quiet and solitude, please be courteous and observe 'quiet hours' before 8:00 AM and after 9:00 PM.

About The Owner

My wife and I used to live in California and love the sun and the sea. We fell in love with the Big Island during our many vacations to Hawaii, and were fortunate enough to purchase this property for our retirement home. We are avid ballroom dancers and crafters and plan on building a dance and art studio on the property.

Why The Owner chose Ocean View

We love the rural charm of 'Old Hawaii' and serenity of the south end of the island. It is on the 'sunny side' of the island and offers a panoramic view of the ocean 2 miles away. We enjoy watching the whale migration in season from our lanai. We also wanted to be in an area relatively free of the 'vog' that can affect the higher elevations and coastal areas to the north. We enjoy having services and amenities close by to avoid the need for frequent trips in to Kona or Hilo. We love the home and hope you will enjoy it as much as we do!

What makes this apartment unique

At 'Hale Maluhia' you can experience the peace and refreshment of 'getting away from it all' while still 'having it all'. Your vacation can be as active or relaxed as you wish. You can explore the richness of the Big Island or relax with a book on the lanai or by the pool. Kids will enjoy the opportunity to swim and splash about and adults can enjoy a relaxing soak in the spa at the end of the day. It provides a great base for exploring the delights of the east side of the Island without the long drive back to Kona. Make sure you take the opportunity to enjoy the spectacular, star filled night skies and look for shooting stars. The star-gazing is truly world-class!!

Unique, Quiet, Secluded, Scenic, Comfortable Vacation Rental

This is not your typical Hawaiian setting. But, if you are up for a unique and interesting place to stay, this is for you. After a 2-hour drive from Kona, we arrived in Ocean View and stopped at the Malama Mkt. for food and other supplies. We were pleasantly surprised that this market had everything we needed for our 5-night stay. We drove about 4 miles down towards the ocean through the rocky lava landscape and found our rental. This one-bedroom unit is on the ground level below the main house. Besides the bedroom, there is a small kitchen, bathroom and comfortable living area. It was nice to have a pool to ourselves. The people of Ocean View are friendly, and everyone we encountered warmly welcomed us to the area. Our activities included: a hike down to the ocean (hot, no shade, pack water), a bike ride out to the lave flow, a fun time at Uncle Roberts, an interesting visit to a local coffee farm, and a delightful experience at the free community Christmas celebration in the park. If you are looking for a different Hawaii experience, we suggest you give this a try.

An amazing oasis

We had been on the big island a few times before, and were now looking for a place near the south side to explore that area. If you enjoy something special, in an area befitting one of the most active volcanic places in the world, this is the place to stay! It is like an oasis in a moon-like landscape, with a completely open view of the ocean. The apartment is spacious, with all facilities, and the owners (Bob and Sue) who live upstairs are very quiet, stay out of the way, but are there for you if you need anything or have questions about the surroundings. The private pool is all to yourself. We would go back in a heartbeat!

Beautiful Retreat From The Crowds

It is never hard to find large masses of people enjoying all of the amazing sights and sounds of Hawaii. What can be difficult is being able to find peace and quiet after a day of touristing about. This rental was perfect for doing just that. If your idea of a vacation is to relax and enjoy awesome views, possess a beautiful private pool, and have all of the modern conveniences still at hand then this home can't be beat. Being able to hike down to a beach that you can pretend is all your own whenever you wish is a huge bonus that I don't know you can find in too many other places in Hawaii.

I feel a certain independence of spirit is required for staying here as the owner lives off-site and the caretaker is invisible if you don't need him. My wife and I needed some time to ourselves and I can safely say we had that in droves. There are better places to stay if you need continual stimuli (there is full internet and tv here if you need it) but if you love laying in bed listening to not much at all or having breakfast outside while gazing over the ocean at infinity then you have found your place.

Everything was clean, orderly and looking like the home we should all have. We left here not only having seen what we wanted to see but also very rested and really not wanting to leave. Perfect.

Quiet, Beautiful location away from it all

We arrived at the house after midnight after a flight delay and Bob was kind enough to stay awake and make sure that we got into the property before he went to sleep. The property itself is great and sits on an old lava flow, which makes it look like you've landed on Mars, it is really something to see. The location is great for checking out the south and east sides of the island, and we took advantage by going into Volcano Park twice and exploring the Hilo area on another day. There is a semi-private beach at Pohue Bay which you can hike to from the house on a rough trail. It is beautiful, but be aware that the hike back to the house is about 3 miles at an uphill grade and can get very warm in the afternoon, so take water and sturdy shoes if you attempt that hike (it is well worth the effort). People should be aware that if you are looking for resort type amenities and restaurants, you will not find that here, but if you are looking for a place that is quiet, remote and has good access to the south shore, then this is the place to be. We didn't have a chance to use the pool or hot tub during our visit since we were constantly out exploring the Island, but both looked very nice. Thanks again for everything, and we can't wait to return to the Big Island.

Very pleased with our stay

The property was as described and was a pleasure to stay at.

There was a small issue that we could not gain access to the property when we arrived, due to an internally locked door, but that was quickly resolved by the owners in-town house manager.

The surrounding lava landscape is interesting and the old Hawaiian walking trail to the beach is a must do. On the trail you will see interesting pukas and lava balls etc. The walking trail starts off Poko Drive and is marked with white coral bits on lave high points.
