Old-Timer Cabin is located in the historic mining town of Garfield, CO (also known as Monarch). High in the Rockies at an elevation of 9500 feet, six miles east of the Continental Divide. Surrounded by the San Isabel National Forest. Views of timbered slopes by day and star filled nights make this an Alpine setting you won't forget. Garfield originated as a mining town in the early 1800's. In the latter part of the century a fire swept through town leaving only 3 original buildings, The School House, a log cabin and the Courthouse/Jail which is now known as the Old Timer Cabin. Scattered throughout the area you will find foundations of original mining cabins from 200 years ago!

We enjoyed the cabin for one night as it is in an area where you can walk to a stream and it has easy access to highway 50. The kitchen was well stocked with pans and the grill on the back porch worked well. We enjoyed sitting in the large gathering room after dinner.
The down side was the outdoor porches were very small so sitting together outside was tight. The bathroom is old but the kitchen had modern refrigerator, range and microwave. There is a flat screen tv which we didn't use. The bedrooms have a total of 5 beds, but the largest beds are "full size" so difficult to comfortably sleep two adults. One of the beds had a comfortable, newer mattress, but it was also only a full.
We left after the first night. It was just not comfortable enough to sleep two nights for us. Our group had two people in their 50's and two in their 80's. If you are looking for an inexpensive cabin, with a need to sleep at least five people who are not particular about the quality of beds, or perhaps younger than us, you would be fine.
The overall experience was exactly what we were hoping for! The cabin was well kept, good layout, and perfectly located between mountains and town. Would recommend and look forward to renting again.
We really enjoyed this cozy historic cabin. It was a perfect get-a-way for our big family's Monarch ski vacation (just 5 miles from the ski hill.) At times, the temperature outside was frigid but the cabin was warm. There is plenty of seating for dining and in the living room. This cabin is not new or fancy but it has personality. We enjoyed looking at the logs that make up the walls and guessing at the dates each addition and update was added... like the cute, tiny bathroom. The beds were comfortable and the three bedrooms let the little kids go to bed early and the big kids and adults play fun games in the living room. A snow blower on a tractor cleared the fresh snow off the driveway and we had no trouble even with just a 2 wheel-drive van. The care-takers of the cabin were friendly and easy to reach and answered our one question quickly. The views outside the cabin are picturesque.
