Green Bananas is a charming Victorian beach front cottage that accommodates one or two couples or a family of up to five. It is located on the southeast side of Lubbers Quarters, a moderately inhabited island in Abaco, Bahamas.
Lubbers Quarters, a relatively undiscovered beauty is a private island tucked between Great Abaco, Elbow and Tilloo Cayes (pronounced 'keys') It Abounds with historic lore from Blackbeard's buried treasure to tales of gnome-like 'Yahoos' who comb the beach looking for green bananas. (Ask any island child.) There are several trails on Lubbers, as well as caves, wild orchids, hummingbirds, small beaches and interesting people.
Lubbers, in the Bay of Abaco, is surrounded by quaint islands, likened to a pastel version of Martha's Vineyard. Nearby you will find fishing and boat building villages, the famous Hope Town candystriped lighthouse, artist colonies and the world renowned Sandy Cay Seapark.

I am a Bahamian and live on the mainland of Abaco... Green Bananas is my beach cottage... Where my kids and I spend holidays and weekends.. and now would like to share with you..
The Owner purchased this cottage in 2004
Green Bananas is the most unique cottage in the Abacos. Its rustic yet has the finest comforts.. It is directly on the beach but also has a private dock.. You will live on the front porch.. The outside shower is private and delicious... The running lane of boats is just off of the dock so you can sit all day and seagaze. Lay in bed and watch the gorgeous sunrises. Go fishing, crawfishing, conching, cruising, and then come home to Green Bananas and grill your Catch - on the dock...
Most island homes are either on the beach or have a dock... But not both... Green Bananas is the incredible gem... gorgeous white sand beach... long, simple dock...
After staying for a week, we had a great trip that definitely exceeded our expectations. The house was super cozy and rustic that was ultimately a great place to stay. My only recomendations is for the owner to instal better shower heads (which were quite poor) and to instal a water filter to make the tap water drinkable.
My wife and I spent 6 wonderful nights at GB. We have stayed at other Caribbean islands, and this was by far the best. The cottage was well stocked with everything needed to cook, plenty of linens, and the beach - the best! Plenty of nearby beaches, snorkeling, and other islands for sightseeing. Oh yeah - and Vernon's key lime pie!!! We will definitely be coming back to GB! The owner was very helpful and accommodating, and offered several helpful ideas.
My family has stayed a few times at Green Bananas. If you are looking for a great cottage with a tropical feel, this is the place. GB is in an excellent location and has a very nice beach and dock for swimming, fishing and relaxing. GB is the definition of a great Abaco vacation!
I just read the previous review and am not sure what else I can add... (they stole all of my rave reviews;)) We LOVED staying at Green Bananas. From the moment we docked the boat until the moment we sadly loaded up our oat for the return trip we never thought "I wish the house had...." anything!
This was our second trip to Lubbers Quarters and our first stay at Green Bananas. Our first trip was ten years ago with a group of adults and we stayed at the top of the hill in another wonderful home and had a great week; but when we began to plan our return trip with our thirteen year old daughter in tow we knew immediately that we were interested in staying at Green Bananas on the beach.
The house is beautiful and very well kept. The kitchen is stocked and there are a number of games and books if you need a quick break from the sun or it happens to rain. This house is perfect for a family of 3-4. There are plenty of towels and extra bedding if it gets chilly at night. We were aware ahead of time that there were no laundry facilities and packed accordingly.
The soft sand beach in front of the cottage was perfect for when we decided to stay close to home although I would recommend planning several day trips to explore the other islands and beaches in close proximity to Lubbers! Elbow Cay, Guana Cay, Little Harbor, Marsh Harbor & Man o' War Cay are all a quick boat ride away and each boast their own unique and FUN attractions. We also found several great snorkeling spots within ten minutes of our dock. (I think our daughter spent more time in the water most days than out!)
The owner was great and very responsive to any questions we had while planning our trip and the island caretaker was responsive and helpful. We had a great week and will definitely be back!
Green Bananas is an amazing escape and we will always remember our recent stay. Our family of four researched cottages throughout Abaco for months before selecting Green Bananas. The time we invested paid off. We were looking for something directly on a beach (so the kids could play within sight and easy reach), something with a dock (for both keeping our boat and for fishing off of when it was windy) and something quaint and memorable (after all we wanted to feel like we were on a small out island). Green Bananas delivered on all counts.
The cottage is directly on a small protected white sand beach. Our girls literally lived on the beach. We saw conch and starfish in the water right in front of the house. They enjoyed playing in the water, jumping off the dock and swinging in the hammock. The dock was perfect for safely housing our boat and for catching fish. We caught snapper off the end and even hooked a couple of sharks.
The house itself is absolutely awesome. It is one of the cutest cottages in the entire area. It has a big back porch with both adirondack chairs for relaxing and a higher set of chairs and bar for enjoying a drink or eating. Inside, there is a master bedroom downstairs and a loft upstairs. Our girls loved climbing the ladder to the loft. The decor is adorable- think Tommy Bahama meets an old wooden ship. We loved all the windows and fresh air which kept the house amazingly cool even in late June.
We live in a very nice waterfront home in South Florida and usually stay at pretty high-end hotels. However, on our trip to paradise we were not looking for an estate or the Ritz. Green Bananas is immaculate and has a great quaint feel--we really felt like we lived in the islands for a week. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed. There is both an inside bathroom and an outdoor shower and sink (we all loved showering outside in the fresh air!). There were lots of books and games.
We loved being disconnected from our busy and demanding lives (although the house does have fast WIFI which we tried not to use). Lubbers is a great island for families. There are a couple of very good restaurants and lots of trails and beaches for exploring.
Lastly, we appreciated the amazing attention from the owner of the home. From the moment we expressed an interest in booking through the week after we left, she answered all of our questions and ensured we had a great stay. We are already talking about going back!
