“A Treetop Fantasy” Time Magazine

“Blackthorne floats among the treetops like a great ship” AAA's VIA magazine

Would you like your vacation or corporate retreat to be in a one-of-a-kind, totally unique home resembling a giant elegant tree house that Sunset magazine called “A carpenter’s fantasy”?

[Please Note: I just bought the beautiful 1-bedroom cabin next door. For guests that want to have 7 bedrooms and 7 baths, you can simply add $235 a night (plus tax and cleaning) to your bill and rent that cabin as well. Two pictures of the cabin are included on this page, or go to Home Away 3831658 or VRBO 3831658ha to see many pictures.]

The Blackthorne (formerly the Blackthorne Inn) is a 6 bedroom 5.5 bath totally private 3200 square foot home resembling a giant, elegant tree house with 3500 square feet of decking adjacent to a national park (The Point Reyes National Seashore) yet centrally located only 1.4 miles from the town of Point Reyes with its fine dining and shops, 2.5 miles from the village of Inverness, minutes from world class ocean beaches and Tomales Bay State Park swimming beaches, less than a mile from the Park’s headquarters with endless hiking trails and less than one hour from San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge and the Napa/Sonoma wine country.

“The Blackthorne, about an hour north of San Francisco, looks as if it were built by mad King Ludwig working in wood.” The Dallas Morning News

General Description: This 4-story home sits on a private 3 acres that feels like a thousand acres as you are surrounded by national park in total privacy. The Blackthorne rises to the level of the treetops with the help of a 4-story handmade cedar spiral staircase. The atrium built with floor-to-ceiling glass doors from San Francisco’s former train station connects to the living room with its 20 foot ceiling, 6 skylights, castle-like turrets, and walk-in stone fireplace.

First, Second and Third Floors: The first floor has two large bedrooms, one with its own additional sitting room, each with private entrances and decks. There is one full bath on this floor. The second floor has the living room, large dining area, kitchen, atrium, half bath and massive decking and separate laundry room with 1 washer and 2 dryers. The third floor has two very unique gabled bedrooms complete with skylights and stained glass, each with its own private bathroom and deck.

4th Floor and separate 1-bedroom suite: The octagonal shaped bedroom on the 4th floor has floor to ceiling glass on 7 of its 8 sides and treetop panoramic views on all sides. This room connects to a one-of-a-kind footbridge that leads to a private deck with bathroom and hot tub and both indoor and outdoor showers. In addition, there is a separate one-bedroom suite next to the 5-car parking area with queen bed, small living room, private bath and Satellite TV included with your rental.

“This is an architectural achievement. The operative word here is ‘elegant,’ for while whimsical in design, offers every imaginable comfort and feature”

Diane Siskin, Chattanooga New-Free Press

For your enjoyment The home comes with 4 televisions with 170 channels, DSL high speed wireless internet, 150 first run high definition movies (DVD's), over 100 CD's for music as well as 4 ipod players, five telephones with unlimited local and long distance calling (in the U.S.),a gas Bar BQ Grill, a sparkling hot tub and baby grand piano. In addition, guests are provided with 4 tennis racquets, tennis balls and a key to a private tennis court 3 minutes away for unlimited tennis.

If you want a one-of-a-kind experience that you, your family and friends will remember, talk about and return to, visit this unique place and see why the New York Times reader’s poll gave The Blackthorne its 5 star highest rating.

Although children love the Blackthorne, the home may not be suitable for young children as there are many stairs and balconies.

“Which brings us to treehouses. At their simplest they are for kids, at their most complex, for Tarzan and Jane. Or they were until The Blackthorne.”

Robert Ragaini, The Boston Sunday Globe

About Belinda Meadows

My name is Robert Galliani. I am a 3rd generation San Franciscan. My wife of 23 years and I have three children ages 20, 22 and 24. We happily and very fortunately live in a beautiful place called Marin County California where our lives are intertwined and revolve around our children. We bought The Blackthorne and continually improve it. We invite people to rent it nightly and weekly to experience this unique, one-of-a-kind, hand made home, which we will keep in our family for generations.

Belinda Meadows purchased this house in 2010

Why Belinda Meadows chose The Bay Area

In 1975 a friend of mine who was a Princeton educated engineer and his wife bought a spectacular acre of land next to the Point Reyes National Seashore halfway between the village of Inverness CA and the town of Point Reyes CA. (1 hour from San Francisco). With the help of master craftsmen, he built a spectacular 4-story wood crafted 'castle' resembling a giant tree house that his wife named 'Blackthorne' after the main character in James Clavell's novel SHOGUN. From 1982 to October 2010 they ran it as a very successful and famous B&B. We bought it because the location is heaven on earth. The house is placed adjacent to a a national park surrounded and minutes from some of the best beaches in the world as well as the quaint town of Point Reyes with its fine restaurants and shops and the village of Inverness. 100,000 acres of national park covered with hiking trails is at our doorstep while Tomales Bay is 8 houses down the street and the city of San Francisco is a one hour drive away.

IT was the perfect house for my family of 8

  • 5 of 5

Everyone from ages 6 to 70 loved the house. The steps were interesting and people should know about them. The living room is incredible as is the bedding on the bedrooms. The kitchen looked better than it did in the pictures on the web site. We would have appreciated plastic containers with lids to store food and some plastic or foil would also have been nice.

My crew loved the hot tub and the outdoor shower. They have the biggest refrigerator I have ever seen and we really used that space. The grounds and decks are lovely with beautiful flowers and plantings. We appreciated the games, DVD's and CD's. A very special vacation.

A wonderful place for a family occassion

  • 5 of 5

the setting, the facility , the well equipped kitchen, the choices of places to sit both in and out, and the many fun and different rooms all make this a wonderful place to stay with a group. There are plenty of things to do in the area in terms of the activities and food.

The information along these lines is provided.

All generations loved this place, although the setting on a hillside might not be great for the under 6 set.

A dehumidifier in the lower areas would be a good idea as they feel and can smell a bit damp.

We are already figuring out when we can return.

The Best of Memories

  • 5 of 5

I first stayed at the Blackthorne in the mid 80's. Later, with my then girlfriend Linda, we stayed there several times, always in the Eagles Nest if available since then it was run as a B&B. In 2006 we decided to get married and after not finding the type of venue we wanted for a 100 person wedding, we both eagerly agreed to find out if we could use it for our wedding. We could and did and our 15 person wedding party had a marvelous time, June 24, 2007. Linda and I decided that we would return with 8 of the closest wedding party friends at each 5 year anniversary. So in June of 2012, ten of us celebrated our 10th anniversary. By then it was a VRBO, decidedly better as we could prepare our own meals. Good wine, good food, good friends, it couldn't have been better to be in the setting at the Blackthorne - idyllic!!!

We returned for the 10th anniversary party last weekend, but sadly without Linda, who passed away from lung cancer on October 17, 2016. Before I lost her she said that she had three goals before she died and the last was to make the 10 year anniversary. It was a bittersweet weekend, but surrounded by my closest friends and the warm environs of the Blackthorne, it was a fitting tribute to her memory and all of our memories of her. I doubt if I'll ever return for that particular weekend in the future, but I will see the magical, spectacular, and singularly beautiful Blackthorne again, I'm sure.

An enchanting forest getaway!

  • 5 of 5

I just shared a lovely weekend at the Blackthorne with a group of friends. The house is so unique and delightful! We really appreciated that there were nice, spacious communal places to hang out, as well as a lot of privacy for each room (most have their own bathroom and a balcony). The kitchen was well stocked, and we were able to make several large delicious meals. We went on hikes during the day and spent our evenings by the fire in the well-appointed living room. Overall we really enjoyed the entire weekend and I absolutely would love to come here again.

The Blackthrone is unique - a wonderful one of a kind property.

  • 5 of 5

The Blackthrone Inn offers a great escape. Surrounded by trees with no neighbors in view it is reminiscent of a European hunting lodge. The kitchen is well equipped. The property is well maintained. There are little touches everywhere that are a delight for guests. The video available on their website offers a good introduction, but it's only a start.

Gorgeous, unique house

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing relaxing weekend at The Blackthorne. For a group of 7 of us gals, it worked perfectly..everyone loved having their own space, and the house is beautiful and comfortable. Communication with the owners was smooth and they graciously answered questions ahead of time and during our stay. The setting is stunning and you are close to all Point Reyes has to offer. We're already talking about re-booking for next year!
