Bed was very comfortable. Kitchen was fully stocked. The property lacked privacy from the owner. We found the property too isolated.
We read Jai's description of her "mountain/garden getaway" and thought it might be an interesting change from the coast. We were disappointed and would never come back.
We didn't find find Jai to be particularly friendly (perhaps we were spoiled by EVERYONE ELSE on the island with Aloha Spirit). She wasn't especially happy when she saw we had a 2 year-old with us (however, she had no problem collecting the extra $45 a night for him). She never even took the time to walk us through the rental or around the property... she just dropped off some fruit and went on her way. I will say however, that she was nice enough give us access to the rental 2 hours earlier than scheduled. and tried to "make nice" after our initial conflict. Her first words to us were not "Welcome", but "If your kid breaks anything you better be prepared to pay for it". (Of course he didn't break anything, but it was a stressful start to our stay!). We even had a misunderstanding over the washing machine (you would think that paying over $600 for 3 nights would suffice to get laundry privileges!)
The mountain mosquitos are definitely something you should be prepared for, my wife's legs can attest to that. The "ocean view" was not that great and the kitchen had a rough "camping feel" to it.
The owner lives right above the guest house and so at night we could hear her stereo playing and early in the morning we could hear her walking around (along with a chorus of roosters). Also, our balcony gate was broken, so that was a concern with our little one.
The place was by no means horrible (the bed is actually quite nice) and Jai means well. It was interesting to get off the beaten path and see some of the neighborhoods above Kapa'a town. Also, be aware that the amount of rainfall is significantly higher in the hills than on the coast. If you are a child-free couple and don't mind roughing it a little then perhaps you will like it.
Our stay at Jai's Honua Lani Passionfruit Suite was magical. The unit is wonderfully clean with all the comforts of home, including a/c in the bedroom which was needed some nights. Paradise is what you look out to. Her beautiful, lush grounds, full of life and wonderful birdsong was just what these tired, overworked mainlanders needed! Jai is a wonderfully warm person with all kinds of insight on what to do and see while visiting Kauai. Her Passionfruit Suite and Jai herself made our two week stay our best vacation ever. Can't wait to return.
Everything was in complete working order. Cooking was easy with all the tools to create a meal.
If you want manicured grounds stay at the Sheraton, but if you want Kauai in natural setting (minus needing a machete), you need to visit Jai's gardens. Don't miss the lower garden.
Privacy is always given, but Jai is only a call away. This was, by far, the best vacation we have been on. Happy, happy, happy.
We really enjoyed our 7 night stay in Kapahi, Kauai. The bottom rental was very spacious, nicely decorated and very clean. A large porch is right outside your door to enjoy the tropical gardens below. Jai had beach chairs, umbrellas, coolers and a island book of great places to visit and eat; she was also available if you had questions/concerns. I think what really made the trip is that the rental is in a fabulous location. We could be on either side of the coast in 45 minutes. And the town of Kapaa is 5 minutes from the house where there are bike rentals, eateries and gorgeous beaches. So you had all this and then could retreat to the top of the hill where it was peaceful and quiet - and enjoy the chickens and roosters. Merlina, the cat was also a plus!
