Beautiful!! Loved it!!

I don't usually wright reviews but we had such a great stay here at Honua Lani Gardens I wanted to share.

Our rental was clean and quiet with a perfectly equipped kitchen. We really enjoyed our massage in the hidden jungle bungalow and the gardens were stunning with few mosquitos. Jai was accommodating to our needs but let us enjoy our private space. She was a great host.

We will definitely be returning to honualani gardens as soon as we can.. Such a beautiful property off the beaten path but close to town.

Aloha and Mahalo Jai!

Great, quiet spot with beautiful gardens

I highly recommend the massage. The sound of the birds singing and a gentle breeze blowing through the trees topped it off eve though we visited during the warmest and most humid season, the cabin and the massage hit were comfortable.

Owner's Response: Aloha Jodi, I am so delighted you enjoyed the massage and the location and birds etc. The condo does stay very cool in hot weather. I think it is because the sun is over the top of the house early in the day and the heat does not get through to it. The wood walls and floors also keep it cool. Thank you and I hope you can return soon for another garden massage.

Just OK

Bed was very comfortable. Kitchen was fully stocked. The property lacked privacy from the owner. We found the property too isolated.

Just "alright", wouldn't return

  • 3 of 5

We read Jai's description of her "mountain/garden getaway" and thought it might be an interesting change from the coast. We were disappointed and would never come back.

We didn't find find Jai to be particularly friendly (perhaps we were spoiled by EVERYONE ELSE on the island with Aloha Spirit). She wasn't especially happy when she saw we had a 2 year-old with us (however, she had no problem collecting the extra $45 a night for him). She never even took the time to walk us through the rental or around the property... she just dropped off some fruit and went on her way. I will say however, that she was nice enough give us access to the rental 2 hours earlier than scheduled. and tried to "make nice" after our initial conflict. Her first words to us were not "Welcome", but "If your kid breaks anything you better be prepared to pay for it". (Of course he didn't break anything, but it was a stressful start to our stay!). We even had a misunderstanding over the washing machine (you would think that paying over $600 for 3 nights would suffice to get laundry privileges!)

The mountain mosquitos are definitely something you should be prepared for, my wife's legs can attest to that. The "ocean view" was not that great and the kitchen had a rough "camping feel" to it.

The owner lives right above the guest house and so at night we could hear her stereo playing and early in the morning we could hear her walking around (along with a chorus of roosters). Also, our balcony gate was broken, so that was a concern with our little one.

The place was by no means horrible (the bed is actually quite nice) and Jai means well. It was interesting to get off the beaten path and see some of the neighborhoods above Kapa'a town. Also, be aware that the amount of rainfall is significantly higher in the hills than on the coast. If you are a child-free couple and don't mind roughing it a little then perhaps you will like it.

Owner's Response: I was still picking fruit when Francis arrived early with his family. When I brought the fruit the bedroom screen door for the unit was wide open as was the screen to the living room. I closed the screens and immediately a huge two year old ( the size of a four year old) ran with all his might into the sliding screen door. When he didn't go through he backed up and tried again! Francis told me they loved the unit and the look of the gardens. They were not really keeping an eye on their boy as we talked and he was grabbing stuff and swinging it around the unit. I offered to help baby proof the unit with them. Everything I tried to remove their boy would grab onto and not let go of. I let them unpack and returned to answer more questions and when I did their son was jumping on the bed without a dipper on. As we talked outside he ran out and grabbed the hose and tried to pull it off the wall with all his might. When I asked Francis to sign my rental agreement his whole happy attitude changed. He went ballistic and became hostile. Said he did not want to give me his credit card information. Accused me of being unfriendly and frankly I was shocked and dismayed! I was doing my best to help them settle. I explained that everyone everywhere in the world has to have a credit card on file with the hotel they are staying in. It is policy not something that just he had to do. I never said that if their child breaks something they would have to pay for it. It was certainly a hard start but I did try to reconcile with them as best I could. They seemed to genuinely want to see the gardens so I offered to take them through at their connivence. They appeared to be gone much of the daytime and never texted me for a time to see the gardens and when I saw them and asked if there was anything they needed they said no just to use the washer dryer, which they did. The extra person fee is $15.00 a night not $45.00 and did not nearly cover the five hour cleaning and four loads of washing including the quilt at the end of their stay. I sometimes play some jazz music at dinner time but am a quiet person by nature. I pay for a company that places a natural non toxic mosquito eradication barrier around the house and gardens making for very few mosquitoes here. It is still necessary to keep the screen doors closed. It is my goal to provided a retreat space for people and families from the stress of every day life and a nature experience. I am sorry if you were disappointed.

Heaven on Earth

Our stay at Jai's Honua Lani Passionfruit Suite was magical. The unit is wonderfully clean with all the comforts of home, including a/c in the bedroom which was needed some nights. Paradise is what you look out to. Her beautiful, lush grounds, full of life and wonderful birdsong was just what these tired, overworked mainlanders needed! Jai is a wonderfully warm person with all kinds of insight on what to do and see while visiting Kauai. Her Passionfruit Suite and Jai herself made our two week stay our best vacation ever. Can't wait to return.
