Framed by towering Georgia pines and marshes The Bluebird overlooks Horse Pen Creek and the Back River. The owners live in the main living quarters on the ground floor, which began as two army barracks, which were moved from historic Fort Screven in the 1940’s.
Former owner, George McDonald, an original girl scout who served under Juliette Gordon Low, purchased the cottage in the 1970’s. George was a spirited woman, a retired teacher who was very community focused. She was instrumental in getting Tybee’s named changed back from “Savannah Beach” to “Tybee”, as well as being a primary leader in initiating the restoration of the Tybee Lighthouse. George added the second floor, which now serves as The Bluebird Suite, for her sister, Caroline. George and Caroline enjoyed living in their marsh cottage until the late 1990’s. The current owner, your hostess, Shirley, hopes to provide a wonderful experience for travelers who appreciate helpfulness but also value their privacy.
Your cozy suite (with private entrance) is spacious and includes a living area with satellite TV, wi-fi access, a variety of books; and a refrigerator, coffee maker, & microwave. Bedroom includes a king sized bed, private shower, closet & and a sitting area.
A variety of birdhouses, garden art, and wind chimes add whimsical touches as you experience breathtaking sunsets overlooking the marsh, Horse Pen Creek, & the Back River. The location is central to the Back River fishing pier, the Tybee Pier and Pavilion, the beach, a variety of restaurants, art museums and shops. Bring your bike or rent one for an enjoyable way to sight see around our small island.
The view is sensational and can be enjoyed from each room. At high tide the marsh is covered with water and in addition to enjoying watching boaters, or kayaks passing by, it’s relaxing to watch the fish jumping or the occasional serendipitous glimpse of dolphins frolicking in the waters.

Beautiful sunsets. Shirley was a delightful host.
We have stayed at the Bluebird for a number of years and have had a wonderful time each year! We love the way the sun lights up the rooms, and the blue/yellow decorating theme makes you feel relaxed. We're birders, and all we have to do is look out the window to see beautiful birds around the marsh. Although there is a narrow road between the house and the marsh, you feel like you're right on the marsh with all the changes the tides and light bring. The sunsets are amazing - we watch the sun go down from the porch and then, within about a half hour, the gorgeous reds, oranges, and purples light up the horizon. It's a wonderful neighborhood for walking - along the marsh or down to the ocean. The rooms are cozy and comfortable, and the whole experience just makes us feel like smiling!
This home holds so many childhood memories for me. My Great Aunt Bucky (George McDonald) and Great Aunt Caroline were incredible women. We would go crabbing and come home and Aunt Bucky would cook them for us. We played for hours in the yard and use to love watching the birds with all the birdhouses Aunt Bucky had out. You can't help but love this home because it was filled with love for years. I miss my two Great Aunts but they definitely shaped me into the woman I am today.
We've stayed at quite a few places here on Tybee and this hands down has to be one of the best! The location is absolutely perfect. It's close to the beach but also tucked away on the back side of the island where it's super quiet. The home was very well maintained and clean. Shirley greeted us as soon as we arrived and was incredibly kind! I would without a doubt stay here at the Bluebird again!
Wonderful place, absolutely loved it! Owner so nice and friendly, she provided everything you could think of for your enjoyment and comfort, even bug spray and binoculars on the porch. We could not have been more happy with a place to stay! Within walking distance of many things. I could have just stayed and lived here. Would love to go back!!
My husband and I discovered Tybee Island for ourselves several years ago. We've had opportunities to stay on the north end of the island along the Savannah River, on the south end close to the pier, and even beachfront central of the island. However, the Bluebird afforded us the most relaxing place of all. Situated facing the back marsh the Bluebird is clean, comfortable, and accommodating. Shirley is a very gracious hostess and clearly understands the vacationer's desire for privacy and a hassle free stay. We look forward to many more visits to the Bluebird.
