About Stephanie

We are a retired Navy family that still love the sea and all the adventures life can hold. Members of our family are still active Military, and we honor those who serve. We are pleased to share our home with those who share our interests in enjoying life.

Stephanie purchased this house in 2009

Why Stephanie chose Fidalgo Island

This is one of the most beautiful places in the Northwest. It is peaceful, serene, and majestic. The waters surrounding the islands invite you to explore each new day, the peaceful sunsets over them give you time to reflect, and the sunrises invite you to do it all over again.

What makes this house unique

Staying at the Quarterdeck House allows you to visit the Islands by day, and relax by night. The surrounding towns, state parks, and local communities offer such a wide variety of things to do it's hard know what to do first. Which is why our guests come back year after year. We invite you to explore and return again too.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for the wonderful stay in your beautiful home! I loved kayaking around Allen Island, it was really challenging, but I enjoyed every second and the views of the mountains were breathtaking. Lucy loved being able to go to the beach every day - I think she could spend all day in the water. Thank you again, and I hope we can come back next year.

Wonderful family time!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed here for 5 nights. The house is very, very clean and the owners were a pleasure to deal with. We will definitely stay here again.

Quiet and Sparkling Clean

  • 5 of 5

I will add my voice to the chorus of positive reviews. Our family of three stayed in Stephanie and Mel's delightful 3-bedroom house in Anacortes for five days. This place is so clean and well-maintained it could set the standard for all VRBO rentals, and the owners are very helpful and responded quickly to any questions we had. We had a great time in this lovely town, going whale-watching with Island Adventures (lots of orcas and seals), visiting the friendly downtown area, strolling along the Guemes Channel Trail, hiking in Washington Park (its entrance is a pleasant 17-minute walk from the house), and visiting Deception Pass State Park. I would've loved to to have visited one of the islands but we just didn't make it; we'll have to come back! The last evening at the house, a mother and baby deer visited the backyard, and we picked apples from the owner's apple tree. Memorable and restful visit.

Impressively decorated, maintained and comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

The house is spectacularly decorated, and ABUNDANTLY supplied with all manner of appliances, conveniences, even a collection of toys. It sports a fine

view of the harbor and Burrows Channel, and the sunsets are magnificent from the back deck. Not just clean, but pristine. Owners are easily available for questions, though instructions on appliance, TV, awning, etc use are comprehensive. A totally marvelous way to visit Anacortes!

Smile! You're on candid camera!

Our stay at the Quarterback House was pleasant and comfortable but marred by an unpleasant confrontation with the owners and an uneasy feeling that we were being watched. This home (and others in the area apparently) book your stay according to how many people are staying in the house - not a flat rate like we are used to. At the time of booking it was not certain whether or not I would make it on this trip, so I was not included as a guest at the time of booking. Fortunately I was able to join my family at the last minute and stay with them at the house. At 8am on the third day of our stay, the owners of the house, showed up at the door (having driven 3 hours to get there!) to inform us that they had surveillance footage of an "extra" person (me!!) entering the house and that we were liable for a $600 fine for hiding the fact the we were harboring an extra guest!! Furthermore, one of the surveillance cameras on the property had stopped working and we were also accused of sabotaging the camera!

I am not one to take to negative feedback out of spite or anything else. I'm not that guy. But this experience was unheard of and uncalled for. We were there to have fun and relax but unfortunately, we left the house with uneasy feelings.

The owners had clearly worked hard to make the property nice, clean and comfortable but we felt as though they were not fully able to let go of it to renters.

Even though check out time is listed at 11am, they texted us days before our check out time to ask what time we would be leaving. After I was "discovered" as an extra/unwanted guest, they incessantly texted us regarding the impending fees/fines that awaited us - things normally handled at the end of your visit.

Lastly, we felt as though we were being watched. There are cameras around the property and at first glance, they give a feeling of safety and security. They prevent and deter burglary and crime etc. You really don't think much about them. But they are terrible when you are on vacation and the owners are using them to watch you.

Out of fairness, I rated this house 2 stars because it was exceptionally well kept, clean and located in a beautiful area. I docked 3 stars because of the voyeuristic, paranoid and frankly, bizarre nature of the owners. 50% of our vacation was enjoyable (it really was!), the other 50% was spent fending off the texts and visits from the owners. It really was ridiculous.

If you value your privacy, I recommend looking elsewhere.

Owner's Response: The review above was written by the unpaid guest and not the rental agreement guarantor. Every future guest is sent a copy of our rental agreement as soon as they make an inquiry to stay. This signed agreement must be returned prior to any payment for a reservation. The agreement reads: “Security Camera Disclosure: To protect our property there are security cameras installed at The Quarterdeck House that monitor the external entrances at the front of the house.” “The only individuals considered to be authorized overnight guests must be listed by name and age in the space provided below. Guests not listed that stay overnight are subject to a $100 per night per person surcharge and forfeiture of your security deposit.” We state you can add or remove guests. The last page of the contract reiterates: “Unauthorized overnight guests will be cause to forfeit your security deposit.” “I understand there are security cameras external to the house to validate contract compliance.” “You are responsible for your guests and that they also know and abide by these rules.” “My signature below indicates I have read, understand, and will comply with the agreement as described on this and the previous pages.” Just after sending our renter notification of the unpaid guest, a security camera quit working. All attempts to contact them went unanswered. We had no option except to visit our home in person. On our meeting with Willem, which he chose to be the only one present, he admitted he knew one week prior to arrival that the guest was coming. We showed him a copy of his contract which he verified did not list the extra guest nor did he attempt to notify us. He refused to accept the copy of his contract. The reason given for not responding to the previous day’s calls, text and email, was “We don’t answer our cell phone when on vacation”. In meeting with Willem V, we were not invited into our own home. The unpaid guest was not present and it was not confrontational. If he had answered the cell phone the previous day or accepted and shown the contract to his Son-in-law and explained the agreement to his guests as required, everyone would have been saved the inconvenience he created. The majority of our guest are thoughtful, respectful, and thankful for the quality of service we offer, and for a clean and secure home. Many return to us year after year. If a guest feels uncomfortable with the agreement prior to signing they are welcome to seek other lodging, no harm-no foul.

Just as promised

  • 5 of 5

The house is bright, clean, spacious, comfortable and meticulously maintained. Quiet and peaceful location, very relaxing, and the perfect launch point for sightseeing trips around the area. We took the ferry to Friday Harbor one afternoon, drove over Deception Pass Bridge on our way to the Boeing Future of Flight Center and Tour another day, and took a quick day trip to Vancouver BC, too. My mom walked the loop at Washington Park nearly every morning. We found some great spots in Anacortes to dine out on the days we didn't cook.

The house worked perfectly for us, a great place to just relax, and was nice to come home to after those busy days of sightseeing. Great linens and towels, comfortable beds, you had everything we could possibly need. Thank-you for a very nice stay.
