Shooting Star Cabin 5 is a handsome, hospitable house of weathered wood and stone, set within the Shooting Star community in front of a breathtaking backdrop of mountains. Living and sleeping wings bracket a stone terrace with grand views of Sleeping Indian, the golf course and the valley. Designed with affection and great tastefulness by its owner, the house is full of character; fine art and rich fabrics bring bursts of fresh bright color to a restful palette of warm wood and cool grey stone.
The great room holds the living, dining and kitchen areas, filled with light from windows on three sides. Two big windows flank the wood-burning fireplace, which is fronted by a stone ledge wide enough to sit on; double couches and soft leather seating face the fire. Above the hearth hangs a carved wooden cow skull, a whimsical, “vegan” nod to traditional cowboy décor. The kitchen stands at the other end of the room, with the dining table between; while to either side, doors open to the terrace, the grill, the lawn and the stream, and the windows brim with mountains.
As in the great room, the first floor master bedroom wing is elegant, simple, and supremely comfortable, anchored by a stone fireplace – which, being gas, ignites at the press of a button. The bedroom overflows with crystalline mountain light. The king bed is spread with a simple white coverlet and piled with brilliant, jewel-toned cushions. A hall leads to large walk-in closet and a traditional, wood-paneled bathroom with double sinks, a soaking tub and a separate glass shower with a bench.
At the top of the stairs, a roomy landing serves as a library and an office – a perfect, peaceful spot in which to review notes, read or relax with a mug of hot chocolate, looking up through the mullioned windows to the very top of the ski mountain. Two bedrooms extend from this landing. One, dressed in soft fabrics and deep, vibrant color, has a big king bed, a TV, and a long view of the slopes. Just off the room is a private bath with two sinks, a glass shower and a separate water closet. The second bedroom is set at the very center of the house, reached via a “bridge” from the library landing. This is a sweet, lovely room in airy pastels, with twin brass beds standing beneath a wide mullioned window. There is a private bathroom with double sinks, a shower/tub combination and creamy wood paneling.
Above the garage is Shooting Star Cabin 5’s fourth and final bedroom, an open suite as big as a private apartment. A queen bed stands under the eaves beside a little gas stove. Bookshelves line the walls and soft carpeting the floors. The suite, ideal for teens, a nanny or visiting friends, has a coffee bar/kitchenette, a breakfast table and a loveseat (which unfolds into a twin bed) facing a wide flat screen TV. Windows look out to the slopes, close enough to touch.
Shooting Star Cabin 5 stands, like all Shooting Star homes, just off the famed golf course; a stream sweeps in a generous curve around Cabin 5’s back yard. Outside on the quiet terrace, a big hot tub built into a stone surround stands beside a round picnic table and the grill; a waist-high stone wall underscores the feeling of seclusion and privacy. From the terrace a long, poetic panorama unfolds: the eye glides across the stream, the golf course, the valley, all the way to the encircling peaks, and from there, up to the sky.
