About Henriette McMichen
Volunteering as a physician and a teacher's aid brought us to the Island of St. Lucia 10 years ago. We fell in love with the Island and its people and decided to purchase our home. We still volunteer one month a year in the local hospital, surrounding clinics and the Soufriere Infant School. We have become very involved and attached to the local community.
Henriette McMichen purchased this Villa in 2005
Why Henriette McMichen chose Jalousle
The view, the tropical gardens and the house with its location were exactly what we were looking for.
What makes this Villa unique
We love waking up every morning and facing the magnificent view of the Petit Piton and Caribbean Sea. We enjoy the terrace, barbe-queing and eating local fruits on the property when in season. We also enjoy walking and swimming.

Absolutely stunning and idyllic
My boyfriend and I stayed at Hermatage cottage for 10 days in November and we honestly had one of the most amazing holidays we’ve had there. I don’t think any pictures or words can quite describe the beauty of this place. We loved the indoor/outdoor style of the house, so you really feel a sense of being at one with nature which is so rare to have these days. Everyday sitting and eating breakfast on the terrace was fascinating, just watching all the birds and various other creatures go about their business. I would also say that another really wonderful aspect to this place is the privacy, you have a pool, stunning views, beautiful villa all to yourself, with no onlookers or noise. The location is prime as well, you literally have everything you could need/want less than a 15 min drive away. We visited various beaches and restaurants round the area: Sugar Beach was our absolute favourite beach and Orlando’s in Soufriere was our favourite restaurant, with incredibly high quality local cuisine. And finally, the staff on site were wonderful, Ferrard, Ray and Magdalene were all very lovely and always there to lend a hand if you needed them. We would highly recommend staying here if you want a piece of paradise.
So glad you had such a wonderful time and enjoyed your stay at Hermitage Cottage. We will definitely let Magdalene, Ferrad and Ray know how much you appreciated them.
Have a lovely Christmas!
Perfect in every way
This place exceeded all expectations. The view was stunning, the huge open living spaces full of wonderful places to sit, the bed incredibly comfortable, the kitchen perfect and fully stocked for cooking, the location excellent for exploring, and the noises of the flora and fauna music to the ears. The place is well kept and help is available if you want it, but equally it is okay to let them know you prefer privacy. This place could not have been more perfect for our holiday.
Amazing views from the patio. Immaculate grounds with beautiful vegetation. This is real Caribbean island living. You are elevated in the rain forest lack of air conditioning was not an issue. Very humid so you are somewhat "moist" all the time. For the price this is a great place to stay, but it is rustic. Ferrard was very cool. Brought us fruit grown on the plantation. Magdalena was off the first three days due to Easter and most businesses were closed so we had to eat at expensive resorts to avoid starvation. Her coming at 9/930 is too early. Forced us to get ready and leave the cottage. Bottom line Hermitage cottage is great! Henriette was very responsive and helpful. Could easily charge twice the price. If you have spoiled children or are accustomed to resort vacationing you may want to think twice.
Now St. Lucia: We have been to Turks and Caicos, Cayman, St. Johns (USVI), Multiple places in mexico, Bahamas... St. Lucia was different than all the rest. It depends on what you are looking for. If you love nature, exploring, and the outdoors opposed to lounging on a white sandy beach St. Lucia is great. The beaches are not great. They tell you they are all "public" but the only way to access them is through a resort. They make this difficult unless you want to pay money, then you are restricted to where you can hang. Sugar beach was a big disappointment. The snorkeling is well inferior to the other places I mentioned. Anse Chastenat is supposed to be amazing? Jelly fish everywhere (told they barely sting...) kids wouldn't even consider it. Coral mostly dead. This is not where you want to go if you are an avid snorkeler. I recommend St. johns or cayman. We chartered a sail boat which was fun. Did zipline. Day trip to Castries.
Another thing...Soufriere is not unlike a third world impoverished town. I travel to rural Kenya for humanitarian purposes yearly and I saw little difference. Who are these people in the reviews praising Soufriere? The Erolines grocery was a joke. Make sure you hit Masseys on the way from airport. We felt somewhat unwelcomed in St. Lucia compared to other tropical Caribbean islands. Just our opinion. Not unsafe...just unwelcomed. Once again this is an AUTHENTIC Caribbean experience. If that is what you are after then definitely stay in Hermitage Cottage. Absolutely gorgeous!!!
5 stars is for the cottage and unbelievable price. I would rate St. Lucia 3/5 for reasons mentioned. Its all about what you are looking for....
Thank you for taking the time of writing such an informative review. We are so glad that you enjoyed your experience at Hermitage Cottage which is very dear to us. I am aware that we do undercharge compared to other villas and the reason for this is that we would rather have the house occupied in order to maintain staff and upkeep of the house. On the other hand I am sorry that your experience with St.lucia was not as positive as your experiences on other Caribbean islands, but hopefully you will still have happy memories of your time spent on the Island. Thank you for staying with us.
A little bit of Heaven February 2018
Hermitage cottage is probably the best villa we have ever stayed at. It is set high in the hills with spectacular views of the Petit Piton and surrounding area including the sea. The sun sets right in front of you in a spectacular display signalling the start of the evening entertainment of various animal noises. During the day we were surrounded by many varieties of bird life including finches and humming birds which the family loved to encourage to perform for us making various bird noises. I must also mention the staff, Magdalena, Ray and Ferrard, at the cottage who looked after us very well often brining fruit and coconuts for us to enjoy. Thanks for letting us stay at your beautiful home. Tony, Siobhan and Georgina.
Thank you. So glad you enjoyed your stay and appreciated the view and surroundings. I always repeat myself but it does make us so happy to hear that our guests enjoyed their stay in our little paradise. Yes we are indeed very fortunate with our staff who are very caring. Thank you again.!
Wow!! What a view!!
The property was absolutely lovely in every respect - absolutely ideal and, of course, a view to die for!! We had a great time and we will especially remember evenings on the balcony with the fabulous views and the sounds from the night time chorus.
Thank you! So glad you enjoyed your stay at Hermitage Cottage, I must agree the view is pretty magical!
All the best, Henriette
We had a wonderful time. Lovely place with all we needed - including a well equipped kitchen. Stunning view from the patio to fully relaxed.
Even through hurricane Maria (we just had the tropical storm) we were safe and comfortable!
