House, 4 Bedrooms, 2.5+ Baths, (Sleeps 10)

Las Olas won TOP VACATION RENTAL AWARD FOR 2012 and 2013'

Upper Captiva also known as North Captiva Island is the best-kept secret in Florida. Only four miles long and half a mile wide, North Captiva is a Caribbean-style barrier island accessible only by a short boat ride. There are no cars and no paved roads (transportation is only by electric golf cart on palm tree covered sandy roads!)

Development has been carefully planned and the environment protected to insure that everyone will be able to enjoy one of the few remaining natural wonders of Florida.

The Island abounds with outdoor beauty. Over 700 acres of natural habitat have been preserved for the protection of endangered wildlife.

There are so many things to do and see here on Upper Captiva Island.

The wildlife sanctuary and wilderness park is great for hiking and bicycling.

Migratory and nesting birds such as osprey, herons, egrets wood storks, bald and sea eagles, pelicans and over 500 other species can been seen at different times of the year. Gopher tortoises and sea turtles roam this island Wonderland freely.

Manatees, dolphins and sea otters are regular sights from the islands shores!

The fishing is exceptional and includes snook, tarpon, red fish, flounder, sea trout, snapper and many other varieties are caught in these waters. Numerous activities are available on this unspoiled island for visitors such as beach combing, bird watching, fishing, swimming, shelling, dolphin watching, nature walks, boating, reading, photographing wild life, stargazing, kayaking, and best of all doing absolutely nothing but relaxing in your own private Island Paradise.

North Captiva is an island that is Boat access only. There is a ferry 'ISLAND GIRL CHARTERS' that departs from Pine Land Marina on Pine Island Florida. The ferry makes the 5 mile journey 6 times per day. Leaving every odd Hour from the mainland at 7, 9,11,1,3, 5 pm. For more information visit there website.

HISTORY OF THE ISLAND

Located on Florida’s Southwest Gulf Cost of Mexico is the Paradise Island of Upper Captiva Island.

Upper Captiva Island is also called North Captiva Island and is located north of Captiva Island and south Cayo Costa Island.

Calusa Indians first inhabited Captiva Island over 6,000 years ago up until the conquistadors arrived and nearly wiped out the tribes.

Ponce De Leon sailed these waters in the early 1500’s and famous pirates frequented the Island such as Jose’ Gaspar. The Island earned its name from the women held “captive” by the pirates for ransom.

Some believe a pirate treasure is buried on these islands, just waiting to be discovered.

A hurricane in 1921 severed Captiva Island into two separate landmasses, thus creating the island that we now know as “Upper or North Captiva Island” There are no Bridges or roads to captiva. Access is only by boat or small aircraft. (Click “Getting Here” for information on getting to North Captiva Island.)

This lush secluded barrier island is famous for it’s breath taking sunsets and pristine white sandy beaches that offer true unspoiled natural beauty. A tropical island playground awaits you at upper Captiva Island, “Come enjoy the ultimate Island Experience!”

About Steve

Having been a professional Yacht Captain in the Carribbean for many years I have visited every island in the Carribbean. Discovering North Captiva I realized North Captiva offered the best of all worlds and was where I wanted to be. Having grown up in Atlanta Georgia, I learned to appreciate the scenic beauty and the privacy that North Captiva has to offer.

Yachting is all about pride of ownership. Having owned and operated numerous luxury charter yachts I know that clients appreciate the attention to detail and the pride of ownership that guest will experience when renting my home 'LAS OLAS'.

Steve purchased this house in 2010

Why Steve chose Florida

North Captiva offers seclusion and privacy yet only 5 miles off shore. While the rest of the world is over whelmed with the problems of daily life, North Captiva is a sanctuary from the stresses of daily Life. Everyone on island is so warm and friendly. Quite often friendships are made by simply stopping in the golf cart to chat with neighbors on island. North Captiva represents a simpler time when life was about enjoying the scenic beauty that nature has to offer. Las Olas is located near the state park nature preserve on the higher elevation side of the island.

What makes this house unique

The beautiful views of the gulf and bay from the home. The sunsets and sunrises that can be experienced from the house are wonderful. The 10 foot ceilings and the large over sized bedrooms. The marble floors through out. The huge great room and kitchen with the vaulted ceilings are great for entertaining. Taking my dog for a morning walk on the beach and beach combing. The private heated Pool! The large screened in Lanai off the living room. The 5 story observation deck which affords 360 degree views and is a great way to enjoy the end of a perfect day on North Captiva.

Beautiful home and wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to North Captiva Island and our first stay at Las Olas. There were 4 adults and 4 kids ages 9-14 in our group and the house was perfect for us. Plenty of space.

The property description is accurate and this is a beautiful home that is so well maintained. The house is kept up to date and is very clean both inside and out. Really impressive.

Steve, the property owner, is extremely fast and helpful with answering all of your questions prior to your stay and the property managers do a great job of escorting you through the house upon arrival. Everything (light switches, cabinets, etc.) is labeled so you don't waste your time figuring out how to turn on the lights and ceiling fans or finding anything you need in the kitchen.

The beds are comfortable, the linens are great and we didn't waste any luggage space by packing beach towels - there are many for guest use. There is plenty of dish soap, paper towels, dishwasher detergent, toilet paper, garbage bags, laundry detergent and fabric softener sheets and even spare tanks of propane for the grill. We didn't run out of anything!

We had some rain during our stay but everyone was able to stay entertained by relaxing in front of the TV watching the Olympics, playing pool and ping pong or reading on the AMAZING screened in deck. The screened in deck was one of our favorite spaces where we enjoyed eating dinner, reading and relaxing free from the mosquitoes! The furniture out there is great.

Las Olas is near the best stretch of beach on the island and taking the kayaks out to the sand bar is a must. Takes a minute by golf cart or 5 minutes by foot to get to the beach. There are also plenty of beach chairs and a few umbrellas.

We hope to return to the island next year and we would certainly stay at Las Olas again.

Thank you Steve for sharing your wonderful home! We had an amazing vacation!

Five Star Stay in Every Regard

  • 5 of 5

When I rented The Las Olas property, I was unaware at first that it was located on an Island accessible only by Ferry. Steve the owner assured me that both his home and North Cativa Island were magical and he was so right! We loved every minute of our stay and wished we have reserved to stay longer.

The house is beautifully decorated, well equipped and has amazing views of both the gulf and bay. We watched the sunrise every morning from the top observation deck and many sunsets too.

We loved eating on the third floor deck, sleeping in the hammock, playing pool and ping pong and most of all love the nice sized pool and hot tube.

The beach and bay are both a short walking distance from the home, which made beach going very convenient.

We took the kayaks out to the sand bar one day and found many beautiful shells. We walked every inch of the beach and roads on the island, although you can also get around with the golf carts provided with the home.

Steve is an amazing home ower. He is very responsive without being intrusive. He cares about you as a guest and has created one of the most beautiful and relaxing VRBOs I've ever rented.

As for the island, there is so much I could say. We loved visiting the Preserve and riding our fat tire rental bikes on the trails. It was so very peaceful on North Captiva. The lack of cars and sparce residence make this the perfect vacation spot for those in need of some serious down time.

We've been home for a few days and I really miss the Island. We will be returning hopefully every year and will always stay at Las Olas... So many good times and good memories!

Las Olas is everything you could wish for - and then some!

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to North Captiva island and we were enchanted. Everything about this vacation exceeded our expectations.

We've rented vacation properties around the world and I can honestly say this is the best ever. This is one of the few occasions when I can honestly say the photos don't do it justice! Steve has thought of absolutely everything to make your stay easy, comfortable and entertaining. He was remarkably responsive to any questions we had before or during our stay. The caretakers on site, Mark and Helen were gracious, friendly and knowledgeable and made sure we didn't have to waste a lot of time figuring things out when we first arrived.

The house is beautifully decorated and the landscaping is absolutely fantastic. I don't think any other house on the island can compete. The outdoor recreation areas felt so secluded and tropical due to all of the incredible plantings. The kitchen has everything you could need to cook - simply or fancy. Steve supplies all the basics you need (towel, paper towels, toilet paper, trash bags, coffee filters, etc.) so you only need to arrive with your food/liquor.

The outdoor spaces were inviting and comfortable and we simply never wanted to go inside!

The house is in a fantastic location - 2 minutes to the beach via golf cart and totally private and secluded. Great sunset views from the crows nest.

The beach nearest the house is the best we saw on the island. Wide sand and near an entrance to the nature preserve. There is a fantastic sand bar off shore and we used the kayaks to paddle out there every day for spectacular shelling.

The island is truly a piece of paradise. The wildlife was extraordinary: turtle, manatees, dolphins and an unbelievable number of birds. We thought Costa Rica was fantastic in that respect, but this is probably a tie! The vibe on the island is completely casual and relaxing. We dined at Barnaclas several times and felt like family by the time we left. I'll miss those fish tacos!

The grocery service at Publix was top notch. You simply fax them your order in advance and tell them when you will pick up. They have everything bagged and packed in dry ice in coolers. Our stop to pick up took less than 10 minutes and they only charge 10% of your grocery bill. That's a fantastic deal. Order well because there is very limited options to get supplies on the island.

We will definitely be back and Las Olas will definitely be our choice!

Las Olas : Awesome! Awesome!

  • 5 of 5

Everything about the house and communication with Steve and Andrew was wonderful! Kayaks were a huge hit for our family. Star gazing and sunsets every night with my husband taking us on a star tour were enlightening. House has everything you could want. Love that there were some spices, olive oil, etc. Lovely bedding, towels. The pool and house were immaculate. Can't wait to return. Skip the fancy restaurants... Barnacles and Mangos are fun and have great food. Be sure to stop on the way to the ferry and buy seafood. We used Sandie's for groceries and they did a great job. We brought our own alcohol and soft drinks. Next time, I would stop and buy meat and fruit. Loved hiking in sanctuary. Saw lots of turtles...ocean was beautiful .. no sign of any red tide. Andrew and Steve have done a great job with the gardens around the property.. Really interesting plantings. Very private home.
