About Albert Holt

Albert and Linda Holt moved to the Big Island after deciding they needed something to do after working in Silicon Valley for the past 30 years. A Kona Coffee farm seemed to be just the ticket. Having had vacation rentals in Lake Tahoe and Las Vegas they were excited about being able to share the Kona Coffee farming experience, and the Big Island Hawaii experience with others, so they built a guest residence just for that purpose. Pictured here with the very first roasted and bagged coffee from our first year (2007) crop.

Albert Holt purchased this farmhouse in 2006

Why Albert Holt chose Kona Coast

Being away from the resorts and tourist hustle and bustle, yet close enough to everything in order to be able to experience the true Hawaii and Aloha.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Panoramic ocean views, 1400 feet above sea level where the air is clean and cool, wild turkeys and chickens, and the occasional pig wandering the property, night time nature sounds, calm no traffic lifestyle and plenty of property to stretch out in.

Heavenly Holualoa

  • 5 of 5

While it's taken me months to get around to reviewing, I think daily of our wonderful extended stay this winter in Al's guest residence. Waking to the sounds of the birds each morning, cooking meals outdoors, and gazing out at the ocean view are forever etched in my memory. The unit is well-equipped, with a very nice bathroom, comfortable bed, and indoor bar area for the option of light food prep inside. I have never felt as peaceful and close to nature as I did this winter staying in this home, yet it had all the modern conveniences. The location, just outside the artist town of Holualoa, is one of the truly special places in Hawaii, and staying here allowed myself and my husband (and our little dog) to experience the area and relax. I highly recommend this hidden gem.

Beautiful Home in Coffee Country

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful home- the outdoor kitchen with a gas stovetop is a neat feature, the bed is huge, and the rain shower is awesome. It was better than many 4-star hotel accommodations. We brought our dog so the fenced in yard was fantastic. Covered garage and beach gear provided were added bonuses. We didn't get the chance to meet Al but he was very quick to reply to any emails/texts. Very cool to hear all the wildlife, but nothing inhibited our sleep. The location was fantastic- coffee farms all around! Highly recommend walking up the hill to UCC's tasting room for coffee in the morning- or anytime. We can't wait to stay there again!

Our favorite stay

  • 4 of 5

We stayed on 3 islands during our trip to Hawaii and this stay was the best of the 3. As one of the other reviewers noted, the view when you round the corner of the building is beautiful but wait until dark when the lights come out. We stayed in the lower unit and found it to be everything that was described-clean, peaceful, beautiful view, well equipped and convenient. The fact that we enjoyed the slower pace and the entire experience of the Big Island only added to the relaxing and peaceful time that we had. Albert, the owner, was in town while we were staying in the unit and in a 20 minute conversation, we learned more about the Kona coffee business than we did in the tour that we took at another location.

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Our stay started with detailed driving directions from the airport and it got better from there. It is impossible to describe the view as you walk down the hill to the lower unit of the building and then you realize the view is the same from the sliding doors in the bedroom and the outdoor kitchen. During the day we explored the island but choose to come back for a peaceful dinner overlooking the city rather than eating out. The unit itself is modern and well equipped. It has a large bath and bedroom as well as a comfortable living room with a wet bar. If it is important to you there is a large HD tv in the living room. My only suggestion would be to have a pair of binoculars available. This was our first visit to the island and if we come back this will be our place to stay.

Unbelievable beauty and amenities

  • 5 of 5

From the moment you drive down the private road, after following the perfect driving directions, you know you are going somewhere special. The view cannot be described and pictures do it no justice. This is the 4th year in a row we have stayed in Holualoa, and this is by far the best view, location, everything we have ever experienced. In fact, it's the best VRBO experience we have had period. The outdoor kitchen lets you feel like you are really experiencing something out of the ordinary, and the lack of any bugs was amazing (may be the time of year?).

Hotel quality bedding, nicest bathroom have ever seen and a fantastic mix of useful furniture, audio/video and kitchen utensils covers every need. For example, the microwave is a GE Profile, not some cheapo brand, and even acts as a convection oven!

Albert was very hospitable and even made an effort to come see us to make sure everything was ok and gave us a mini coffee farm tour.

We plan on coming back to Hawaii for a few more years and know exactly where we will be staying!

Wonderful up-country Kona alternative to Alii Drive

  • 5 of 5

This property, along with the owner's other VRBO rental upstairs in the same building, are smack in the middle of a coffee plantation far up the mountain yet only a 10 minute drive from the center of Kailua-Kona. Both units are modern, roomy, and bright. The smaller unit, which we rented, is on the lower level, and includes a large bath, a very large master bedroom with a King sized bed from which one can see the lights of Kailua and any liners or smaller boats in the harbor, a comfortable sitting/TV room with a wet bar, and a covered outdoor modern kitchen on the lanai. Well-equipped for lawn and beach equipment, internet, flat screen TV(s), nicely landscaped. We've been visiting Kona every couple of years for 40 years, and this is the first time we've chosen a property such as this one. We definitely plan to do it again. This unit is not accessible to people with mobility impairments because of its siting. The upper unit *should* be OK in this regard. (This isn't yet an issue for us but we are sensitive to it.) I can't remember the VRBO number for the upstairs unit. Contact the owner, who was very helpful.
