About Bill Kammer

Retired NYC Public School teacher, now a full time 'back to my roots' Jazz musician (Berklee College of Music) living in the soul of New York - Harlem. In the past ten years I've seen Harlem grow to what it is today, and want to share it with the world. This is why I have decided to post my duplex apt on this site. I hope all my guests can get a taste of the Harlem culture during their stay with us.

Bill Kammer purchased this townhome in 2001

Why Bill Kammer chose Manhattan

I love Harlem for its Jazz history and hoping to further the tradition.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you very much. We really enjoyed our trip to NYC (I'm still singing "I love New York") and the cozy, comfy apartment. It was well appointed and in a convenient, wonderfully interesting neighborhood. Loved it!

Great stay in Harlem

  • 5 of 5

Just had a wonderful 3 night stay at this property. We were a party of 5 and there was more than enough room for us all. The apartment was as advertised, clean and updated with comfortable furnishings, linens and all kitchen appliances needed for the stay. Location was also great: grocery stores, restaurants and access to public transportation all within walking distance; quick trip to all NYC attractions. Mr. Kammer is an amiable host with a wealth of knowledge about the area to complement your stay.

A great base for visiting the city!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 6 busy days in NYC sightseeing and this apartment was the perfect base for the four of us. Two identical bedrooms and baths, a small well-equipped kitchen, and a place to relax after spending the day and a good part of the evening out - it couldn’t have been much better. The pictures of this apartment are accurate. It is clean and well-maintained. Don’t let the circular stairs between the two floors deter you as there is a proper staircase in the hallway between the two floors.

Bill is the perfect host. Although we planned to arrive much earlier than the check-in time, Bill said we could leave our bags so we could start exploring the city. He was at the apartment when we arrived, showed us around and then provided information about the closest subway stops, alternate street parking, good places to eat nearby, the grocery store and more. He’s a local so he’s a wealth of information. Just ask him! At the end of our visit, Bill checked in to see what we might need before we left the city. Thanks Bill! We’ll definitely be back!!

Good option

  • 4 of 5

The house can accommodate 10 people comfortably.

The host is very helpful and honest. He responds quickly.

The house is close to a subway station which is open for 24 hours, the trains run in every 5 minutes till 11 pm and then in every 30 minutes till dawn. Public parking is also very close as well as you can park your car on the street but make sure you read the parking condition.

All attractions can be reached within half an hour by subways. However you might find homeless people or people gambling on the street if you return after 10 pm. So I would recommend that you walk in a group if you are returning to the house in night.

Overall its a good option to consider based on the budget and location.

Great apartment for a group

  • 5 of 5

The apartment was exactly as represented in both the pictures and description. Two full bathrooms in a Manhattan rental was a much appreciated luxury, and was a fair trade-off for the small communal gathering area. Who needs to hang around in the apartment when you have all of NYC to explore?

The apartment was very clean, the beds were comfortable and Bill was accommodating. We had no trouble finding on-street parking during our week-end stay. We would definitely recommend this apartment.

Great Location.....Great Staycation!!!

  • 5 of 5

Just returned home after spending 5 nights in Bill's wonderful Harlem apartment. We were two couples from Idaho and Wyoming visiting New York City for the very first time, and we could not have chosen a better and more cost efficient place to stay. First, I must note how great Bill was to work with. From the very first inquiry, he was very informative and accommodating. He was in contact throughout the entire process and was available if needed throughout our stay. Thanks Bill for being a great host and allowing us a couple of extra hours at departure due to our late flight! The two-bedroom apartment is exactly as it appears in the pictures. It is clean, has everything you need, and was ready the moment we showed up. As couples, we are in our 50's and 60's, and had no problem negotiating the stairs (though they are steep and narrow). This is a beautiful brownstone in Harlem, so it is not huge and spacious, but is quaint and very comfortable. The neighborhood provides an authentic NYC experience. People on the streets were friendly and paid us no special attention. We did 5 days strictly by public transportation and rode the subway everywhere. $31.00 for a 7-day metro pass, with a couple of mainline subway stops within .03-.05 miles of the apartment. We visited the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, walked the Brooklyn Bridge, took in 2 shows (Cats and Beautiful), visited Times Square twice, saw the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, went up to Top of the Rock, bicycled in Central Park, played golf at Bethpage Red (Black course was closed unfortunately), ate at Harlem Shake and Sylvia's Soul Food in Harlem, and took in a Yankees vs Red Sox game. We did all of this via the metro and LIRR (to Bethpage from Penn Station) and our own two feet. We returned to the apartment several times after midnight and never felt unsafe walking the streets around Bill's apartment late at night. With the Metro App on our phone, we were able to navigate the subway system quite efficiently. We only had to backtrack a couple of times. If I were to visit NYC again, I would definitely consider staying at Bill's place in Harlem once again.
