We sailed to Hawaii from the South Pacific in 1991 and the Island welcomed us so much that we are still here today! We love to travel and explore new places preferably from a nice , home-like base. We used our travel experiences to create a welcoming home away from home for you.
We are cabinet makers by trade and have included our expertise as well as our love for detail and beauty into our home.
We love local food and gourmet cooking so our kitchen is very well equipped .
We support sustainability- we have solar power ( with electric back up), we compost and recycle, we have herbs, nuts and fruit in out garden that we are happy to share with you.
We both meditate and Kerstin practices yoga. We are very happy to share our Yoga and Meditation Shala with our guests.
Kerstin Preyasi Exter purchased this house in 1998
We love this community because it is laid back, rural and real. People know each other here ! This is a beautiful, lush and tropical region of the Big Island and we take pleasure in living Hawi.
The Zen-style home is private and romantic. We have 2 ponds and a waterfall around the house and one of the biggest pleasures is to sit in the soaking tub in the morning and watch the lotus open in the pond. Having evening cocktails on the lanai and a nice al fresco dinner is not too bad either!
If you like beautiful woodwork and attention to detail you will love it here. We have put our expertise and our hearts into creating this home and garden.
You know how sometimes the pictures are far better than the actual place...well not so in this case. The cottage is amazing, very large, clean and beautifully decorated. We enjoyed cooking in the large kitchen and lounging on the lani. I highly recommend staying at either one of the Exter rentals. Their attention to detail is outstanding as is their organization and impecable communication with coordinating your stay.
We can't wait to go back next year!" - Nipomo CA
This was our second stay in Kerstin's home and it was just as amazing as we remembered it to be on our first visit. My sister and I decided Hawaii would be a great place to take our parents' for their 50th wedding anniversary. We ended up renting both the house, and cottage and spent a week in Hawi with the whole family. Kerstin went above and beyond in making sure we had everything we would need to be comfortable.
The home is more than fully equipped with everything we've ever needed. It's beautiful, clean, incredibly well crafted, and the outside shower is absolutely the best shower I've ever had the pleasure of using.
Hawi is a small town with excellent galleries, several great restaurants, and is located approx. 1/2 hour from Hapuna and Mauna Kea beaches, and about 20 minutes from Pololu, a beach definitely worth hiking down to see.
The first time we stayed on the property, my husband and I found ourselves developing a routine of heading down to Hawi every morning for coffee, and found ourselves following the same routine this time too. (although there is an espresso machine and coffee pot at the house.) The Kohala Coffee Mill has a great local vibe, good coffee, and ice cream with plenty of outside seating.
Both of our sons went zip lining with Kohala Zipline in Hawi, had a fantastic experience, and loved every bit of it.
I, without any hesitation whatsoever, recommend this house for anyone who is looking to stay in a beautiful home, enjoy the wild and northern part of the island, and enjoy what Hawi and the surrounding area has to offer.
Mahalo, Kerstin again, for allowing us to stay in your beautiful home. We left again with yet more incredible memories of our time Hawaii.
My husband and I had the best 1 week vacation at this beautiful and unique home--the home is even better than the pictures--we didn't think that was even possible! Everything is high quality--the woodwork, well thought-out layout, high-end kitchen, outdoor double shower, outdoor tub--and it's all in a peaceful setting just 1 mile from the town of Hawi and only 30 minutes from Waimea. The fishpond and waterfalls are beautiful with hundreds of tiny orange fish and even a few small frogs--it just adds to this amazing setting. We enjoyed the peace and quiet to read a book or just plain relax. The owner, Kirsten and property manager Atulyo were very responsive, even though we didn't really need anything because everything was already provided! We could have easily stayed for at least another week or two and we hope to visit again very soon.
My fiancé and I really enjoyed this property. It's right up the road from Hawi which we spent a lot of time in getting coffee, eating breakfast, and dinner. It's a small town and super relaxed and that's what we liked most of it. As for the house I can't say enough good about it. Everything was carefully thought out from the welcome booklet with all the info about the house down to the cooking supplies. There wasn't anything overlooked at all. The outdoor master bath was the highlight of the place. Can't beat showering and soaking outdoors surrounded by lush rainforest and the sound of the waterfall. For the price I don't think you can find better. The owners and property manager were extremely attentive and helpful during our stay, although, we didn't need much. They even leave a starter pack of coffee and some basic cooking ingredients for you upon your arrival. There's plenty more I could say positive about the property but you'll just have to see for yourself. If your looking for something quiet, super clean, and an outdoor custom bath you'll be glad you booked the Zen house. Oh by the way they have a personal yoga/meditation structure next to the house that's also really nice and convenient if your into that.
Beautiful house, had everything we needed. Great location, really nice owners (gave us our space). Loved the instruction book - very thorough and answered our questions. Great overall experience! Mahalo Kirsten and Atulyo!

Our stay at the Zen-Style home was amazing! Kerstin and her husband have created a peaceful retreat. They were also very helpful in getting us situated and ensuring we knew how everything worked in the home. The house is very private and there was enough room for our two young boys to run around and explore, they especially liked the pond! The workmanship on the the home is amazing! We especially enjoyed our mornings watching the many geckos while sipping our coffee. The house was well equipped with everything we needed for our outdoor excursions. We stayed here for 9 days while exploring this side of the Island and it was a great choice as a home base. We definitely would stay here again.
i was expecting the zen house to be a nice house, but i wasn't prepared for the quality of craftsmanship and detail that went into the house, making it feel more like your own home rather than a rental. nothing is overlooked. from the thread count of the linens, the artwork, rugs, and furniture, the quality of the appliances and fixtures, to the cleanliness of the house. it is truly that beautiful. and the outside showers...why anyone would shower inside is beyond me.
and the frogs were in the mood for love, their calling was so much fun to listen to. not at all like the sweet coqui call, but much more guttural and amusing. (they turned it off at a decent hour.)
we loved hawi and the smaller feel of the town. it has several great restaurants, (bamboo and sushi rock are the two we ate at and loved.) a great coffee shop, kohala coffee mill, (where we spent each morning sitting amongst the locals drinking our coffee.) and some fantastic galleries and shops.
the house is approx. 20 minutes from hapuna and mauna kea beaches, which are so picturesque. perfect beaches for swimming, and boogie boarding with decent snorkeling. (get to mauna kea early. before 10, parking is an issue as they only allow so many cars down to the beach, which is nice in that there will only ever be so many people.) waimea is a great town with a malasada truck parked next to the mcdonalds parking lot. (BEST malasadas and lemonade.) and the mountain road between hawi and waimea is gorgeous. i would without a bit of hesitation recommend this house for your stay in a little slice of paradise.
obviously, we loved our stay and hope to return, sooner than later. mahalo, kirsten for letting us stay in your beautiful home!
