When we first moved to Halifax, we were in awe of it's natural beauty and still are. We bought and rennovated a home in Ferguson's Cove and fell in love with the view, the area and the people there. Just down the road from our old house was a piece of land, located directly across the water from the lighthouse. We thought would be the ideal place to build a home. A few years later, we found ourselves sitting on our deck, feeding our dear friend Sigmund the seagull, watching whales feed and the boats go by. We hope that you enjoy the house, the view and above all the feeling.
The Owner purchased this house in 1995
Location, Location, Location! Not only is the view breathtaking but the house is only a 20 minute drive from downtown Halifax, and sits next to a national historic site and park. The closest grocery and liquor store is 5 minutes away as are fast food restaurants and other shopping.
Meet Sigmund The Seagull
Sigmund has lived with us in Ferguson’s Cove for over 20 years. He was only 2 years old when we finished construction of the house. His gray feathers were coming in showing he had just matured from an adolescent bird. He came to visit us from our old home down the street, and he never left.
Sigmund’s favorite spot to sit is on the left facing deck post, where he watches the water and eats tid bits that we feed him. While they may be left overs and dog chow to us, it is food for for a king to him! His favorite meal is left over fish and chips. Many people told us that if you feed one seagull, you will have a hundred show up to dine. This is not the case as Sigmund only allows his mate, Suzie and his family to share a meal with him on the deck!
He's married 14 years now and he and Suzie make a really cute couple. Sigmund had a son last year, whom we named him Freud, even though he doesn’t look overly bright! They have babies every year and move them along. Sigmund stays here year round, but Suzie flies off and returns in the spring. You would laugh to see the site of Suzie's home coming as she is allowed to eat his food and he keeps his wing overtop of her so she isn’t cold.
Sigmund and Suzie have a large family now, and every year they visit for a week, until he has had enough of their free-loading and he chases them off! What a rabble! He also tries to move the Bald Eagles and the osprey that come to nest – what a brave bird he is!
**Feel free to give him some food (there is a jar of dog chow on the kitchen counter for him) and if you wish, fill the bird bath with water, sit back and be entertained as a mixture of birds and Sigmund can put on quite the show!**
Peaceful, relaxing, beautiful, with options for things to do in the city and in the country.
We stayed for 6 nights in September, and just loved the peaceful sounds of the ocean and watching all the big and small boats go by. We even saw the Queen Mary pass, and a submarine. The seagulls were entertaining too! House was beautiful and very clean, and Sherri and Dan were great to deal with. We mostly traveled the south coast, and saw the lighthouses and fishing towns. We went to the north coast to see the Bay of Fundy. My only regret is that we couldn't stay longer! Do recommend this house.
We had a really wonderful stay in The Cove House, which is superbly equipped, very comfortable and restful and yet only a few minutes from the city (around 15-20 minutes to Downtown). The house in architecturally stunning, perched on a steep slope above the waves, with a deck and huge windows giving panoramic views up and down the harbour and across to McNabs Island. We saw thrilling and varied wildlife from the deck every day, from humming birds, squirrels and chipmunks to seals, porpoises and occasional Minke whales, not forgetting every variety of sea bird including ospreys and of course Sigmund the resident guard seagull, who is really charming. All the maritime traffic in and out of Halifax is right there in front of you so, while The Cove House is a superb base for getting to know the Halifax area, you can also find yourself very happy and entertained without going out at all! Sheri and Dan are the most helpful and considerate hosts imaginable, and have encyclopedic knowledge of the local area and wildlife so they can always help if there is anything you need to know. We would love to stay here again - thank you so very much, Sheri and Dan!
Beautiful property with an AMAZING view!! We rented this place for an girls (birthday) weekend. Ages ranged from 18-75. Everyone had a GRAND time and hopes to return again one day soon!! Thanks for helping us to make memories that will last a lifetime.
Just a tremendous experience. Ended up booking on a day's notice and coming in after midnight, and the owner's could not have been more accommodating. Even a bottle of wine on the counter when I arrived. House is as advertised - remarkable views, beautiful setting. About 20 minutes outside of downtown, so I'd have a car, though it's only about $25 to take a cab out. Sauna and hot tub are great. A little piece of heaven out on the coast.
And honestly, Sigmund the Seagull made my day every day.
My husband and I just recently stayed here for 5 nights. The home is beautiful and location can't be beat. Our problem is that on the day we left we found out the owners were staying in what they advertise as "an additional suite upstairs that can be rented for extra people". They also scheduled a new roof to be done the day we left. The roofers came at 7:30 am in the morning. My husband and I both feel a little violated by these owners who did not disclose that they would be living upstairs while we were there. They had total access to our belongings (we were gone every day) and I would have taken certain things with me during the day. For the price we paid we feel they were very wrong. We think it is somewhat creepy that they were up there with their dog the whole time. The owner emailed me several times during our stay when she was actually just upstairs. Although we enjoyed the home we would never stay there again after this. We feel they were totally unprofessional in their behavior.
York Redoubt, a National Historical site and park is just a few minute walk up the road. It has spectacular views of the water, great walking trails but has a unique history. Visit the site, and enjoy the hiking trails just minute from your door. Herring Cove, a beautiful community is just a five minute drive away where you can take gorgeous photos, go for walks and ejoy some fish and chips.
