Your host, Julie , was raised on the James Ranch in Durango, CO, left the paradise of the Animas Valley for six years to travel and complete a degree at Colorado College in Colorado Springs. John, a native of SW Colorado and a geologist with a degree from Fort Lewis College came into her life soon after arriving back to Durango. They quickly realized The James Ranch and the wholesome community of Durango was the place for them to live and raise a family.
Julie purchased this studio in 1993
I can't tell you how much we enjoyed our visit to Durango, especially because we got to stay in your darling cottage. It is so beautifully appointed with so many thoughtful touches. We loved the decor with the pictures of the animals from the ranch. The view is spectacular whether it is raining or sunny. You have made us feel welcome and comfortable.
This was our first trip to Durango and we are already planning our next trip back! We especially enjoyed meeting your Dad and taking his tour. What a wonderful plan you all have for a sustainable farm and the future of your family.
Finally, our visit would not have been complete without the comforting presence of your two beautiful "guard dogs", Izzy and Bella. It was so much fun seeing them as we came back from somewhere and first thing in the morning. Just like home!
Very nicely maintained and equipped. Directions and instructions were clear and concise. Julie was very responsive to questions, including the need to change our arrival and departure dates. For the very active traveler, I'd consider this a good base. There isn't walk-out-the-door and onto a hiking trail right at the property, but many trails can be found within a 10 to 15 min. drive.
James Ranch is a great place. We stayed 7 nights and enjoyed everything about it. Julie's studio is clean, cute, quiet and special. The view from the back window is amazing. This is not your typical property, she has everything you need in the kitchen. The eggs, cheese and meat from their store were so fresh and good. I would definitely recommend James Ranch!
We experienced a truly wonderful week at the James Ranch studio and must say that that everything was outstanding and deserves a five-star rating. It just took us one look, as we stepped inside, to realize that we had selected the perfect location for our vacation. From the beautiful, panoramic views through the large picture windows to the smallest detail inside this cozy and welcoming studio, we agreed that John and Julie have put their heart and soul into this holiday home. The ‘Property Description’ listed on their site is spot-on correct as this studio is centrally located and it is equipped with everything you need for a very-relaxing and comfortable vacation.
One of the features that that drew us to Colorado was the chance to stay on a working ranch where we could take advantage of the organic food that is offered at their nearby market. We purchased eggs, beef, cheese and other items on more than one occasion. We grilled some of their steaks and cooked up some of their ribs and were delighted with the results. Twice, we ate delicious meals at the Harvest Grill and Greens and during one of them we were treated to some toe-tapping tunes provided by a gifted local musical group. The food was unlike anything we have experienced and the hospitality was tip top as well. Julie went above and beyond to make us feel welcome...A bowl of their pasture-raised eggs and a pint of pure half-and-half greeted us upon our arrival and these were certainly appreciated. In addition she shared some history of the Ranch while at the same time providing us with great tips for things to do and places to see including a memorable ride on the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. We rode the train to Silverton, spent a few hours walking through the streets and the shops and ate a tasty lunch at Handlebars Restaurant & Saloon. Our trips to the outlying areas included beautiful lakes, luxurious pastures and ranches were unexpectedly rewarding and will not be forgotten. We highly recommend this studio for everyone and we hope to return sometime soon. Finally, we must thank our charming hosts, John and Julie for allowing us the opportunity to experience the pleasures that abound in and around the James Ranch.

It just took us one look, as we stepped inside, to know that we had selected the perfect location for our vacation. A bowl of their pasture-raised eggs and a pint of half-and-half was a great treat and unexpected surprise. One of the reasons that drew us to Colorado from sunny, Southern California, was the chance to stay on a working ranch where we could take advantage of the organic food that is offered at their near by market. We purchased eggs for breakfast, rib eye steaks and short ribs to BBQ at the studio which were delicious and eggs and cheese to bring home with us. Twice we ate at their Harvest Grill and Greens and we were lucky to be there for their Thursday night Burger and Band night they have during the summer months. We were treated to some great tunes provided by a gifted local musical group. The food was some of the best we have had and the hospitality was tip top as well.
Julie went above and beyond to make us feel welcome as she shared some background and history of the Ranch while at the same time providing us with great tips for things to do and places to see including the memorable ride on the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. As city dwellers, we enjoyed watching as they milked the cows in the morning and also as my husband called it we watched "Cow TV" as the herd grazed the numerous pastures that border the Animas River. There is a lot to see and do around Durango, Chimney Rock, beautiful lakes, and Cortez are just a few things we did but I have to say it was always so nice to come "home" and watch Cow TV. In the afternoon Bella and Izzy would come and visit us. They are 2 yellow labs and their job is to protect the farm animals from predators. If by chance you hear them at night just smile and roll over knowing all is being kept safe by Bella and Izzy as they quickly chase away unwanted visitors. This is all part of the charm of staying on a working ranch. We hope to visit again...soon.
Finally, we must thank our charming hosts, John & Julie for allowing us the opportunity to experience the pleasures that abound at the James Ranch.

We have been traveling outside of the states for the last 2 1/2 yrs...leasing some stunning homes. We have just begun to travel in US. Wow what a start.....Julie's studio at the James ranch is at the top of my list. I found the cabin exceptionally clean, the view was magnificent, decor charming, she paid attention to every small detail. Thank you Julie for making it seem like home.
My husband and I stayed here for a long weekend, and had such a relaxing time! The little guest house was even more beautiful than the photos suggested! Our favorite part of the day was opening the windows to the amazing view! We loved watching dogs chasing the farmers in the distance, and the cows grazing in the field. It felt so remote, yet it was such a short drive to everything Durango has to offer! We cooked at least 3 or 4 times, and had absolutely everything we needed. We will definitely be back!
