I meant to leave you a note. (I left a little note in your ‘wedding’ journal on the desk)
We – I – LOVED your space. It was so cozy, welcoming and absolutely perfect. How delightful to wake to the sound of the song birds and to enjoy my morning tea while strolling in your lovely tropical garden. I will and have – recommended your space to others. In fact – told my family about it and suggested we return and experience the magic together.
I felt the love you have placed into this precious little oasis. Your attention to details did not go unnoticed.
How convenient to the park entrance and to be able to see the glow of the caldera lava lake.
We returned to the area because of the current state of the lava flow for photography purposes and wanted a convenient location. We were intrigued with the listing and photos and weren't disappointed when we arrived. The property, located in a rain forest is itself a photographers dream. The house is very well appointed and has a spacious great room with fireplace which is wonderful on a rainy afternoon. The individual bedroom space heaters are a very important touch that many homes don't offer! The Volcano Park and many good restaurants are located nearby.
My sister, Maria, recently rented this beautiful home in the Rain Forrest as part of our trip to The Big Island. The pictures don’t do it justice – it is beautifully decorated and very comfortable – and the grounds are stunning – you definitely know you’re in a Rain Forrest! The fireplace was all set up for us to enjoy – cozy way to end the day - thanks Roxane (owner) for thinking of everything!
The home is located close to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park so we were able to view the Halemaumau Crater glowing in the night and return to see it the next day! I highly recommend a trip to the Hilo side of the Big Island – even if only for a few nights – to see this spectacular site!
Thank you Roxane for making our trip one we’ll always remember!

We recently spent a few nights in the town of Volcano on the big island of Hawaii. This home was a very convenient place to stay in town near local activities and restaurants. Volcano itself doesn't really have a town center to roam around in and the homes are carved out of jungle plots off of the main highway. They are secluded refuges from one another like private jungle compounds, you could easily drive through this town and not know there are any houses in the area. Are goal was to be out and about for all the daylight hours so most of our time at the home was in the dark, and or sleeping. We were traveling with five people and needed three beds so this home rental worked for our needs, but we didn't really take advantage of it from a stay at home perspective. It was nice to have a fridge and eat our breakfast before we started our day and if we stayed for more days we might have had other meals here too. The yard/property was very nice and the wildlife was pleasing to see and hear, it's too bad that the tourist helicopters have to fly over every morning on their way to the nearby lava flow. But, that is probably the cost of living near a volcano and the tourism it brings to the area. The wild pheasants that visited us in the morning were very beautiful. If we were to return to the area with four or less people, we would consider staying here again, however, my wife and I slept in the converted garage/extra bedroom and it was not as nice as the main home itself. The garage/room did have its own bathroom but the bedroom has a very strong smoke odor from the wood burning stove and the bed wasn't very comfortable. Also, there must be some kind of pump in the garage the pulls or pushes water, or drain water to or from the house/septic system... and when that pump kicks on its not quiet. So, my wife and I didn't sleep that well in the garage, but our kids and my mother in law slept okay in the main house.
We were intrigued by the beautiful pictures online, and so we booked a few days for a romantic getaway without the kids. The Anthurium cottage was even more beautiful in person. We flew into Kona and had about a 2 1/2 hour drive along the coast (would recommend flying into Hilo if you can as it's a bit closer). The cottage is very close to everything in the small town of Volcano, including Volcano National Park. The restaurants in town were surprisingly amazing for such a quiet place. The town is very low key, not many people. It is definitely not what I pictured Hawaii to be like, but in a good way! The cottage was very clean and beautifully decorated; you felt as though the inside of the house blended into the outside, especially with all the french doors open. The fireplace and hot tub were fantastic. When you walked outside, you truly felt as if you were in the jungle; even though there were houses around, it was incredibly private and quiet.
The lady that I dealt with (Roxanne) was amazing as well. She responded very promptly to any question I had. She was very helpful when I couldn't pay through the VRBO website. Due to a quick and unexpected change of plans, we were getting to the island a day early, and when I emailed to see if we could get the cottage for an extra day she made it happen. When there was an issue with the hot tub, she coordinated to send someone over within a few hours to fix it.
Overall, I would highly recommend this beautiful cottage for a romantic getaway or a peaceful retreat. If we ever return to the Big Island, we would love to stay here again.
While our trip to Anthrium Vacation Rental was not without problems, the house was so fabulous and the owner so helpful and accommodating that I still give it 5 stars. The home was beautifully decorated and we loved the huge windows that looked out into the gorgeous grounds. The photos look very accurate. It was clean and miraculously, given the wetness of the rain forest, was not musty smelling or moldy in the main house. The extra cottage is quite musty smelling but also had apparently not been used in some time. The garden is incredible - a fantasy land with gorgeous plants and abundant bird life. The location is very convenient yet private. It was very chilly when we arrived and the house was quite cold initially but warmed up with the radiant heaters so that it was comfortable within a few hours. If you are wanting the third bedroom in the extra cottage, be sure to let them know this when you make your reservation. We thought it was part of the house rental, but it is not automatically so. However, they were very accommodating and cleaned the extra room for us and didn't charge an extra fee for it due to the confusion. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it highly.
Our stay was not without problems, but the home was so lovely and the owner so kind and accommodating that it still easily gets five stars. I'd definitely stay there again. We loved the decor and the books. Be sure to be clear and let them know if you are needing the third bedroom, because that is not assumed unless you have five people or more in your party.
