Guestbook comments from the manager

Aloha Marie

I meant to leave you a note. (I left a little note in your ‘wedding’ journal on the desk)

We – I – LOVED your space. It was so cozy, welcoming and absolutely perfect. How delightful to wake to the sound of the song birds and to enjoy my morning tea while strolling in your lovely tropical garden. I will and have – recommended your space to others. In fact – told my family about it and suggested we return and experience the magic together.

I felt the love you have placed into this precious little oasis. Your attention to details did not go unnoticed.

How convenient to the park entrance and to be able to see the glow of the caldera lava lake.

Huge Mahalo!!!

Unique and spacious cottage in the Rainforest by Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Very quaint and charming.

  • 2 of 5

The owner was a wonderful person to deal with. The furniture in the home is as beautiful in person, as they are in pictures. The backyard was just beautiful. Unfortunately we only lasted 1 night. The house was extremely damp and musty. Everything was damp and musty smelling - bed sheets, towels, pillows, even the toilet paper. I let the owner know right away, and she said it is not always like this. It was so damp and musty that it triggered an asthma attack for me. We told the owner that we were leaving, and she refunded our money. The reason I am writing this is not to bash the owner or her home; I am writing this as a warning to others who may have similar respiratory issues, to let you know this may not be the home for you. It is extremely damp inside the home. It may get better if the owner were to put a couple of really good dehumidifiers in the home...instead of a container of Damp Rid. It doesn't seem like the home is well insulated, so that could be the problem as well, especially since it gets so much rain. I had read a prior review by another renter, who mentioned they could hear the rain on the tin roof. Well, this is VERY true. At first this may sound very is not. It is very, very loud. It reminded me of being in a tin shed during a torrential downpour....which sounds like putting your head inside of a steel drum while somebody sprays water on the outside. It rained all night, of course, so neither one of us got any sleep.

At least it was close to the volcano. Mahalo.

Owner's Response: First of all, I want to reassure every potential guests who would wish to reserve that the house is very well built and the guests just before and hundreds of others, as well as the guests right after, were very happy with the house and its beautiful Rainforest. This house is well adapted to its unique environment. We provide a fireplace, a wood stove and also electrical heaters in the bedrooms, which are the most efficient means to provide a dryer environment, and guests are welcome to use them at their convenience. To address our reviewer, while I am sorry you had a flare up of your asthma, our house and its natural environment can not be held responsible for your health issues. The refund was actually a nice gesture and in no way a reflection of the “state of the house” you depict here in a description as detailed as a "home inspection", after spending one night. I do hope you feel better. Mahalo.

Very nice remote secluded property

  • 5 of 5

This by far is one of the best properties that i have rented around the volcano. We just loved the property and Roxann was great. I had a minor issue with the initial payment but she was understanding and we got it worked out. (My fault not hers) The next time we decide to go back to vistit the volcano we will make our reservations around the availbilty of this property, thats how well we loved it. Close to the village and volcano,

Thanks Roxann for offering such a nice property.

Spacious cottage but not for everybody

  • 4 of 5

This is a spacious cottage with the main house and another detached unit with its own bath. This whole setting would be perfect if it weren’t for the musty odor permeating the whole establishment especially the detached unit and the spider webs in every corner and above your beds. The garden is beautiful and the location excellent, close to the park, hiking grounds and volcano village with restaurants and limited grocery shopping. The hot tub is a plus. Kitchen is well supplied and we enjoyed our breakfasts there. Flashlights are a must as the surroundings get very dark after sunset. If you plan to eat in I suggest you do your grocery shopping in Hilo before heading for Volcano.

Beautiful, Unique Property in the Rain Forest, Close to Volcano

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed this house. It was beautiful, with a lush yard surrounded by rainforest, with birds everywhere. Very quiet at night, beautiful antique furniture. The hot tub was great after a long day, and my kids enjoyed getting cosy in front of the fire place. We really enjoyed being so close to the volcano at night. Just wish we had more time just to relax at the house; we drove to Hilo for day trips, which was great too.

Quiet location close to Volcano

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful spot in the rain forest. Mature trees surround the property.

We stayed for only two nights as we live on the north end of the island and wanted to visit the National Park without traveling 4 hours round trip all in one day.

The house is beautiful and furnished with some very unusual pieces.

We did not use the hot tub, but it appeared to be clean and ready to use (hot).

The kitchen was well equipped - but we were unable to find any measuring cups.

Thanks for the quick help when the key was not where expected when we arrived.

One note - the bathtubs/shower combinations were raised and difficult to enter and exit. My mother (73) was too concerned about losing her footing to use the shower. Adding some safety rails for support would help a great deal.
