Four generations of the island-based Black family have owned and loved this special oasis by the sea, presided over by the oldest and largest banyan tree in Puako. The family’s handiwork is present in the ocean-side groves of coconut palms soaring 15 to 35 feet high: on the right are palms named and planted by individual family members, many as young children, or in honor of special friends; on the left, special events are marked by a separate grove. Together, the palms frame sunsets and the neighboring island of Maui, dominated by the 10,000-foot-high mountain of Haleakala.
The property was chosen by the family matriarch in the early 1950s for its location along some of the best tidal pools in Puako, where children can swim, fish and play, protected by a perimeter of ancient lava flows. The adjacent “Big Rock” rises above the pools, setting the stage for social gatherings and sunset watching. Turtles come to call daily, feeding on the seaweed at the Big Rock’s edge. In the winter, humpback whales pass by, 100-plus yards offshore, cavorting with their young. With the constant sea breezes, the rustling coconut palms and waves provide a natural rhythm of music to this idyllic setting.

The home was sparkling clean and more well stocked than we expected. The best part of the experience was the privacy and tranquility. As well as the sound of the surf when falling asleep and the of course the Sea Turtles! This is our third stay at this home and we have already booked for next year!
Gorgeous relaxing steady cooling breeze with wonderful snorkeling , no need to leave!
We loved this house and its absolutely beautiful setting! The house was perfectly located, right on the ocean with lots of big lounge chairs on a big lawn leading to the ocean, a hammock, comfortable, attractive furnishingsinside, a very well-equipped kitchen, and beautiful, airy bedrooms overlooking the ocean. We rented the little house in the back, too, which was also really nice with a great view. No need to go any further than just out front for amazing snorkeling. The staff was very accommodating to our needs which was very much appreciated. We will be back!
We are not resort people and always prefer visiting Hawaii by renting a home in the less traveled areas. Having fallen in love with the Puako location on the Big Island, we began renting homes there. We will not look any further, as this one is exactly what we were looking for. We traveled with our son and his wife and toddler, and rented only the main house. The Treehouse (studio on same lot) was vacant while we were there and i believe they said that is their policy, but you may want to ask to verify. The house had everything a vacationer needs -- beach chairs, bbq, snorkeling equipment, boogie boards, towels. The kitchen is equipped with everyone one needs (except a good toaster).
More importantly, the location was ideal! This home is located toward the end of the Puako Beach Drive on a small point where there is no need for a "sea wall" due to the lava beds that protect the home. Consequently, you can enjoy the sea from the lawn without looking over a wall. The lava beds provide great swimming holes for children and adults. Furthermore, the snorkeling directly out from the house is some of the best! We all ventured out beyond the lava beds to where the deep turquoise water begins at a huge drop off. It is stunning and the sea life amazing! We saw several snorkeling tour boats anchor directly out from Beach Banyan. When the tide goes out, the tide pools created by the lava beds are fun for kids also. If you are looking for a sandy beach, you need only drive 5 minutes to Beach 69 or Hapuna -- both incredibly beautiful!
The upstairs bedrooms open to a lovely deck with the welcoming trade winds . The bathrooms are large and airy. Although the indoor seating/living areas were very comfortable, we spent little time indoors. The outdoors has comfy lanai furniture as well as two dining areas and a hammock. The sunsets are out of this world.
2 Papayas were great to deal with, giving us a good tour of the home and some great local advice. We will definitely return!
We spent 10 days at Beach Banyan property - wonderful! House has everything you can think of including a natural alarm clock birds in the beautiful Banyan tree, waves and ocean breezes. Kitchen was well stocked, 3 bathrooms and sleeping arrangements worked great. Beautiful grounds, with lots of seating choices, turtles to watch and snorkel with. We used the barbeque several times and ate in. Looking forward to going back next year or the year after and we will definitely stay here. Reasonable drive time to other activities. Property was clean, a maintenance item came up while we were there and it was taken care of the next day. If you want to stay in a house in Hawaii, right on the water this property is a great option.
I celebrated my 75th Birthday with my family in the Banyan House. We stayed for 9 days. It was everything we expected. Clean, excellent well organized full kitchen, abundance of towels - simply, all one needed for a perfect stay. Most of all the location is superb, it could not have been more enjoyable. Every room had views of the ocean, lovely front lawn receding into the lava rocks and ocean. The children played happily in the tide pools which were safe. Shopping was easy and parks and snorkel places nearby.
All in all, a perfect stay. The Management of 2Papayas was most caring and attentive.
We learned about Beach Banyon from friends of the owners, so we were a bit biased from the start. But what we experienced was totally beyond all expectations, meaning near perfection. The position of the house under the commanding banyon tree was amazing. It was just two of us in the house, but six could be accommodated easily. Our days began taking our coffee down to the lava rocks and watching whales swim by. Then we searched the tidal pools counting turtles as they swam about. We walked endlessly up and down the lava beds, exploring all the nooks and crannies. We did venture out during the day, (Whale Watching, North Shore hikes, Volcanoes NP) but were reluctant to leave the setting to go out to dinner, so we loaded up on food (the Puako General Store is a gem) and ate at home. We wanted to soak up every moment of our time and the views to take home. The folks at Two Papayas we fabulous, always there if there was a need, but totally respectful of our privacy. We would return in a heartbeat, but for a longer stay, and maybe with grandkids! There's nothing not to love.
