Amazing Honeymoon Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Surf Sound Cottage was the perfect spot for our September honeymoon. This was the first time in the Caribbean for my husband and I, and we were NOT disappointed (how could you be in this paradise?!). We were a little nervous going during hurricane season but it was great without large crowds at the popular places. We hit many of the hot spots, Maho, Cinnamon Bay, Salt Pond (a few times), Cruz Bay. It was our first time snorkeling and it was amazing! Plenty of life to see just underneath the surface. Denise provided everything you could think of for a day at the beach with snorkeling gear, beach towels/chairs, coolers, noodles, etc. We watched the moon rise every evening from the deck and was surprised at how bright it was every night. The house is great for a couple. It gets warm during the day but come evening time there is a nice cool breeze and the bedroom has AC. The outdoor shower is a must! It is highly recommended that you rent a 4WD vehicle. The driveway is a bumpy ride to say the least, but you do get used to it after a few days. Denise was fabulous with information and helpful hints about island life. It made everything easy for this first timer!

Surf Sound Cottage is Idyllic

  • 5 of 5

We just spent a week at Surf Sound Cottage and found it to be idyllic. The cottage sits up on a hill overlooking John's Folly Bay, near the southeastern tip of St. John and is 10 minutes or so south of Coral Bay. It is a very quiet location and area, and there is a fantastic view from the porch of Norman and Peter Islands and of the beautiful sunrise each morning. The great beach at Saltpond Bay is just a few minutes away, where there is good snorkeling (we saw turtles there) and a really good hike out to Ram's Head. It is also close to good snorkeling at the Lameshure Bays (especially the western part of Great Lameshure Bay) and at Kiddel Bay, which has some of the best coral (on the western side) we have seen in this part of the Caribbean in many years (it's a bit challenging to find and get to, but worth it; plug Kiddel Bay into Google Map) . It's only a twenty- to thirty-minute drive to the North Shore beaches, which are spectacular. There are good restaurants in Coral Bay, so we found no need to do the 30-minute drive to Cruz Bay, which is much more crowded than the Coral Bay area. Good National Park hiking trails are also nearby, but we didn't get the chance to try them because we spent all our time snorkeling.

The owners are extremely hospitable, helpful and responsive. And they have provided everything you could possibly need for your stay in the cottage.

This is a fantastic place, and we would definitely return. One cautionary note: you will definitely need a 4-wheel drive vehicle to get up the driveway (as the owners' information piece will advise), and it is a challenge to negotiate the driveway because it is steep and takes a sharp turn half-way up. but we were able to deal with it without incident.

Absolute Privacy in a Gorgeous Location

  • 5 of 5

I did a LOT (way too much, really) of research on which island to visit & where to stay, & I am thrilled that I chose so well. St. John, particularly Coral Bay, is a very special place & resonated with me well. Surf Sound Cottage was the perfect place for me to spend the 1st 3 nights of my trip.

Denise was wonderfully communicative, & offers every little thing that one could want or need in her lovely cottage. She's got a great sundeck as well as a covered porch, & the views are incredible. She provides thoughtful extras like Roku TV (you can watch Netflix through it on the TV), DVDs, an I-home stereo, a calling card & phone for guest use (very helpful since my Verizon phone doesn't work in St. John, & I think NO cell phone works at her cottage), a washer/dryer & clothes line, an outdoor shower, everything you'll need in the kitchen, extra bug spray (an absolute MUST!!), A/C in the bedroom, and beach towels. The house did get VERY hot each day & night but the bedroom was cool when I slept with the A/C on. The King sized bed was comfy, & is different from the one pictured. Her couch & chair that are pictured have been replaced with 2 recliners that were comfortable. The Internet worked surprisingly fast.

I would highly recommend that you rent a car on St. John instead of St. Thomas. I had a 3 hour flight delay & missed the last car barge ferry for the night, so you could get stuck on St. Thomas with your car if that happens. Also, if you rent on St. John you can park for free in the lot in Cruz Bay (otherwise parking is difficult & pricey there). The driveway for this cottage is particularly gnarly (like most roads on St. John) & I never really got used to it, but be warned you MUST have 4WD.

Enjoy St. John, & do yourself a favor--stay at Surf Sound Cottage!

Enjoyed our 7 day stay at Surf Sound Cottage. Loved the calm of Coral Bay as our base. The sunrises were spectacular from the deck. At night listening to the surf wash ashore was so soothing. The outdoor shower was a first, we are now converts. Pack light, Surf Sound had everything we needed except 1 thing but it's very fun to fill that need. Hop over to the VI National Park and pick up a $10 beach bag with the most beautiful picture of the beaches. A keepsake! Weighs nothing in your luggage home and allows you to give back to the National Park.

We hit all of the beaches, favorite was Cinnamon Bay for the big waves and soaking up the rays. 2nd was Soloman for the calmness and beautiful swooping palm trees. 3rd was Gibney for the tire swing. 4th was Honeymoon for the long stretch of baby powder like sand and beautiful trees. Since it was the off season several Coral Bay restaurants were closed so we chose Cruz Bay's Joe's Rum Hut most nights for the sunset through the trees and overlooking the boats. The North Shore Deli in Mongoose Junction had great sandwiches. Highlight of the trip was an all day sail on the Kekoa to Jost Van Dyke. Most beautiful boat. The sail was very relaxing. Jumping off the boat to swim to the Soggy Dollar Bar was an adventure I won't soon forget.

Wonderful View, Wonderful Stay

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at Surf Sound Cottage! The use of beach chairs, coolers, etc. made our trip all the more enjoyable. The cottage was very clean and just perfect for the two of us. The breeze on the covered deck was amazing, as well as the views! 4WD is a must for the driveway. It's bumpy, but not scary! After the first time, you'll be a pro! We had a fabulous stay and enjoyed every minute!

Exceptional spot on a gorgeous island

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at the cottage in late May and early April. It was our first trip to St. John. The cottage was a perfect getaway... many areas of St. John have whole neighborhoods of homes, but Surf Sound Cottage is up on its own little side of the mountain, completely private. It was heavenly.

Each day started with the sunrise and coffee out on the porch. We spent a week snorkeling and hiking every day, and each evening we'd come home to Surf Sound for a locally brewed beer with lime, sitting out on that favorite spot-- the porch. We did most of our cooking at the house, and found it very easy to fly in with some basics, even frozen steaks and chicken (not that that's needed-- the grocery stores are well-appointed). The kitchen and grill were great, and fully stocked with all the equipment we needed to make some great meals.

I loved staying on this side of the island. We had a constant breeze, so we never needed to turn on the A/C the entire week we were there. We also never needed bug spray. Salt Pond Bay is nearby for a swim and snorkel, and the hike out to Ram Head (also nearby) was a favorite. The views were stunning. For more snorkeling we'd drive to the north beaches, and we hiked in various spots all over the island. The one time we went out to eat it was in Coral Bay, so for us the cottage was in a perfect location. Away from the commotion, quiet and private, but close enough to everything we wanted to do.

The cottage has everything you'll need. A great kitchen, a super-comfy king bed (with the curtains blowing in the breeze coming off the ocean... perfection!), a landscaped yard and outdoor shower (great for rinsing off after a snorkel), a separate patio with ocean overlook, and that amazing covered porch were our favorite parts of the cottage. We also appreciated the laundry and all the extras provided. The driveway is not that big of a deal. It was fun, and we quickly learned how to do it. I like that at the top of the drive there's an easy, flat parking space.

Before we knew what St. John was like, we were looking at other places to stay. I'm so glad we booked Surf Sound. Now I know that a lot of those places cost less because were in crowded areas, or had views of shops or other homes. Instead we had Surf Sound, with its privacy and amazing views of the ocean and islands. The stunning view from the porch, and our time there, is my strongest, happiest memory from St. John. And that's saying a lot!
