Our stay at the Neva Midgett House was marvelous! From the start, the owner (Sharon) was personable, professional, & so pleasant! We walked to Manteo's Waterfront (great shops, restaurants, Elizabeth II Ship, Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, etc.) from The House. An easy drive took us to the Elizabethan Gardens (lovely) ,the NC Aquarium (excellent), along Dare County country side (beautiful), and across the bridge to Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, the Bodie Island Lighthouse, shops, and restaurants right on the Atlantic Ocean!

The easy walks and drives to so many places throughout the area made our stay at the Neva Midgett House marvelous! The house was quite roomy and was decorated with many antiques but it had all the conveniences of modern day life! The towels & linens were plush and there were many supplies (TP, soaps, laundry supplies, etc.) which made our visit very pleasant. We ate our breakfasts on the front porch sitting on rocking chairs with end tables while watching the lovely light porch curtains waving in the wind.

The Clemon's Cottage and The Island Loft were also occupied but we never saw or heard the other renters during our entire stay! We do plan on returning to "Cottages on Roanoke Island." Truly, the house, location, caring owner, and beautiful areas between the Sounds and Ocean resulted in a delightful time for everyone!

It feels like home.

This was our second stay at The Neva Midgett House, and after spending about nine hours on the road – we felt as though we had “come home” when we opened that front door and walked into the very welcome comfort within!

It’s easy to see from the photos that this is a beautiful house with a wonderful front porch and, although January isn’t prime for porch sitting, it can be a month of surprising weather. We arrived when it was just barely above freezing, however within two days we were up in the low 60’s enjoying our vacation from the frozen northeast!

Manteo is a perfect town – completely walk able (or bike able) from its lovely historic downtown, along the boardwalk by the waterfront, into Festival Park and even out past The Elizabethan Gardens. Although Nags Head's beaches are just minutes across the Washington Baum Bridge, we chose to go a little farther south and spent a few hours on Coquina Beach where we met some local fishermen launching their boat into the surf to set their nets for dogfish (AKA as cape shark) - and then were lucky enough to chat with two riders and their beautiful horses who’d come over from Wanchese. This is one of the great things about the area – you meet people who live there year round, not just tourists.

Although our stay in Manteo was a short one, we were able to hit some of our favorite spots including the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge just over in Manns Harbor (about a 30 minute drive), Jeanette’s Pier (an 8 minute drive) to watch the wetsuit clad surfers and pelicans fly over…and then down across the Bonner Bridge to Pea Island where the migrating ducks and waterfowl were really out in full force! If you haven’t driven down there, it’s a must see during any time of year. I highly recommend late afternoon in order to walk out to the observation areas and catch the ducks and birds as they home in before sunset…where you might find yourself in awe as the sunset steals over the never-ending sky, reflecting off the North Pond.

Staying at the Neva Midgett House once again offered us the comfort of feeling at home, having a real kitchen to cook in, yet being on vacation in a charming town. Must add that it’s a pleasure to walk everywhere – including to one of the best little restaurants in town, Ortega’z Southwestern Grill and wine bar just around the corner on Sir Walter Raleigh.

We couldn’t have asked for a better winter break, and Sharon Watson knows how to make her guests feel very welcome.

No better place to stay while in Manteo ....

  • 5 of 5

We've stayed at these properties before but I think this was our most memorable stay. We had some rainy days so it limited opportunities to be out and about. It was a week with my adult daughters and my lovely niece. It felt very much like being at "home" together. We cooked at "home," watched movies, chatted while drinking coffee on the front porch (cocktails too) all while enjoying the rain. The house had everything we wanted and needed. It offered us all a nice and relaxing respite. Thank you Sharon.

Convenient and comfortable

  • 4 of 5

All reservations and logistics went perfectly. Upon arrival we had two bad first impressions. What should have been an inviting rocker-lined porch and front stairs had old cobwebs covering them and the first breath in the door was that old antique smell - not musty, not dirty, just old. I assume this was due to the antique furniture, the hot weather, and the house being closed for a few days.

Things went uphill from there. The A/C got rid of any unfreshness and we cleaned the porch with a broom we found in the closet. And as we explored the house we found it to be clean and comfortable. The linens were high quality, the kitchen had everything we needed, there was a grassy area for our dog to explore, and the wifi, tv, and other systems worked well. The furnishings are somewhere between kitsch and quaint and the structure is sturdy but a little wonky. I guess it's just what you would expect of an historic cottage in a coastal tourist town. Do be aware that the upper attic of the cottage is rented separately. It has its own entrance and other than the occasional foot shuffling and meetings in the lawn this is really no big deal. I guess it could be if the upstairs neighbors were party animals.

Here's the good stuff. The cottage is midway between the main drag and quaint downtown Manteo and within easy walking distance of both. The property location on Roanoke Island proved to be a great central launching pad to explore the wonderful attractions of the Outer Banks. We visited Fort Raleigh State Park, home to Elizabethan Gardens, The Lost Colony, wooded trails, and lots of information on Virginia Dare and her ill-fated colony. The North Carolina Aquarium is also nearby. We ventured off the island to Nags Head for the beach, Kitty Hawk for the Wright Brothers Memorial (A+) and up to Duck for some lovely scenery and dining. Going south visits the beautiful Bodie Island and Hattaras Lighthouses and the beachy culture of Hattaras Island. Further south on a ferry will reach Ocracoke Island but we didn't get there.

Overall, we had a great vacation at the Neva Midgett House. It was reasonably priced, clean, comfortable and plenty spacious. You should consider it for your OBX experience.

Beautiful Relaxing Stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Midgett House with our son and daughter in law. Everything we needed was thoughtfully in the house. The kitchen was well equipped.

We brought a few games to play I was surprised to see there were a few board games already there. We had breakfast in the morning and ate out lunch and dinner except for one night. Matt made his Grandma's special chicken casserole the atmosphere that night was so nice to be surrounded in a home we recalled the good times setting around Grandma's dinner table.

Just what we needed before we started our summer!!!

Thanks, Becky

Couldn't ask for anything more

  • 5 of 5

We spent three nights at the Neva Midget cottage for our anniversary. We couldn't have asked for a more pleasant stay. Beautiful furnishings and all of the conveniences of home. We liked the fact we were able to bring the fur babies along:). They enjoyed the walks near the waterfront right down the road. Enjoyed all of the shops and restaurants close by. Safe and quiet area. The owner, Sharon ,answered all of our questions promptly about the property before renting and transactions were easily handled. We were thankful for the opportunity to rent such a wonderful house in a quaint neighborhood.
