We like to travel and decided to make this into a vacation spot at home with lush low maintenance landscaping and modern upgrades. When in Southern California, this becomes our vacation home.
This large property is spacious with modern amenities for today's living. The Altadena/Pasadena area prides itself on historical homes and this home maintains the feel of openness with modern features.
Privacy, many patios for outdoor activities, beautiful views of the San Gabriel Mountains, and close to the National Forest to take a nice hike at all levels of desired activity. Spacious grounds can easily accommodate a small wedding party.
On your way toward the property you drive past a horse stable and into a really nice community, which sets the tone for your stay. Upon passing through the gate, well-manicured plants adorn the grounds, creating a very inviting feel, and persisting across the property.
Though it’s not apparent right off the bat, the home is massive. There were seven of us, and it felt like we would’ve needed another 20 or 30 to make it seem like our group filled the indoor space. The home is long, which affords the occupants a lot of privacy, and if you were in the backyard for example, you’d be well out of earshot of someone in the master bedroom.
And then on the outside there are all kinds of lounging areas and nooks to take in your surroundings, which we loved. We made sure to follow the instructions and warm up the jacuzzi well in advance, and honestly didn’t have enough time to take in everything in the two nights we were there.
Our favorite part about the home however was how much character it has. This is the home of a very cultured and well-traveled family, and there are a host of statues, figures and paintings from all over the world, spanning a variety of African motifs. We absolutely loved the artwork, fascinating counter-culture literature, excellent record collection, and tons of great old movies lining the shelves in a couple of the rooms.
Our group cooked several meals, which we enjoyed either on the back patio deck, by the fire pit, or in the very proper dining room.
To be fair to the traveler relying on my reviews, I want to be clear that this is more of a ‘cozy’ home, and the furniture isn’t urban-contemporary or anything - but that really works for the way the home integrates into its surroundings, as you’re basically in the woods. You’re able to walk down the street to a pleasant nearby hike, and although we stayed close to home, Pasadena is a quick drive should you want to take in more ‘city’ life.
The owner was very accommodating and hospitable, and our stay was quite relaxing, and a place I would dearly like to return to.
The home is located in Altadena and close to walking and hiking areas. Very nice bedrooms and additional sleeping areas in family room. Very nice kitchen and eating areas both inside and outside on the deck. Great home for large family gatherings.!! We highly recommend and enjoyed our stay!
I had the most wonderful stay with my family at this location. The place had everything we needed. The house was larger than we expected and was perfect for my graduation dinner of 30 guests. There were plenty of different rooms with lots of seating (dining, living room, den, kitchen, etc).It was fun exploring the rooms. There are tons of books in each room! The decor is different than any house I have been in which gave it a unique, antique feel. i love the circular drive way that can fit about 5 cars. The backyard is HUGE and peaceful to walk around. There is also a nice backyard porch to lounge on.
Beautiful home in Altadena with plenty of space for a large group. Close to Pasadena and with no issues getting around. Wonderful stay, would come again.
The property was fine. It's in a quiet neighborhood near the mountains. Lots of parking, a very big, interesting house.
But really, none of it matters when the property is so severely mismanaged. The manager, Eric MacCalla, does an extremely poor job, and is extremely hard to contact and work with.
The property was not properly cleaned before us. There was a dead mouse disintegrating in the hot tub--there for days and days. The electricity was shut off for 24 hours because the owner did not pay the electricity bill. We found four contact numbers--none of them worked, we eventually got in contact via email.
In the end, we only got a one day refund for all of our trouble, despite a night with no electricity (we had to work but could not), being unable to use the hot tub (a key reason we chose this property; if you think we went in there after they fished out the "mouse" and filled it with chemicals, you're crazy), and the big trouble trying to get the owner to do anything about these.
not only that, but it took the owner months to give the refund, and I had to contact him via phone or email at least 5 times to get it done. When "no funds are available", you should take the time to contact the person you own, not silently hope that he'll forget that you owe money for your really, really, terrible service and attitude..
Beautiful location and property that accommodated out gathering well. Hot tub wonderful. Owner easy to work with. The house is not well maintained, (peeling paint,) and was a bit dirty. Worn furniture some which was threadbare, very cluttered. Brick walkways very uneven thus fall were a concern for the older people.
The property is located at the base of the Angeles National Forest. It is 30 minutes away from the hustle and bustle of downtown LA, 15 minutes from Old Town Pasadena, 5 minutes from hiking and horse trails, and easy access to freeways to visit vacation spots of Los Angeles/Orange County.
