Very much enjoyed this large gracious home in a beautiful setting.

  • 4 of 5

Our family had a great time in this lovely home. The setting at the edge of the San Gabriel mountains is quiet and very scenic. The house was spacious and very well equipped. The home is older and showing its age a little, but so gracious and comfortable...we would all definitely stay there again. We had a wonderful time. Plenty of space for get togethers, a huge living room with lots of seating, a large game and tv room, 4 comfortable bedrooms....we didn't want to leave...

Owner's Response: It's always nice to have guests who enjoy the house. The house was built in 1933 but is solidly made and upgraded to current standards. Large spacious rooms, entertainment areas, patios, and grounds. Former owner was a JPL director. We are always working on upgrade projects to enhance the house and provide TLC. It is a never ending task. We welcome guests who can appreciate Pasadena/Altadena history. The community has lots of outstanding older homes and prides itself on it.

The house is huge and the views are breathtaking!

  • 4 of 5

The property is lovely. We enjoyed walking through the various gardens and looking at the fish in the fish pond. We sat outside every night with the fire pit going, just relaxing. Our family was on vacation visiting my brother and sister in law, celebrating Easter and their son's 1st birthday. The house accommodated about 30 people for Easter and room for more. We celebrated my nephews birthday with a small family gathering but it was perfect for my brother and his family to come over each day to spend time with them. We had a few issues but the property manager got back to us right away and resolved them in a timely manner. Overall our experience was great! We enjoyed our stay and the house very much!

Owner's Response: Glad to have happy guests. The amazing thing about the fish pond is that they are self maintained gold fish and get large. The property can accommodate lots of people (house on 3/4 acre +3/4 acre in the valley) but we limit it to 30 to keep the neighbors happy. Several patios for relaxation. Glad the fire pit on the front patio was used (next to the spa)

Much nicer than the pictures!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed there the weekend of our daughter's wedding! It was very roomy for the bridal party (four girls) and the bride to get ready for the big day! Also bride's parents and one set of grandparents stayed the weekend. The house is HUGE with enough room for quiet for grandparents and reading for parents AND 5 girls getting ready!!!

No complaints from anyone!

Also we have a morning after the wedding brunch on Monday for the out of Towners and got breakfast burritos from Lucky Boy on South Arroyo for about 20 people!

There was plenty of seating and tables for everybody!

The home was clean and they provided everything, dish soap, sponges, towels, sheets, coffee maker, etc etc

The pictures posted by the owner do not do it justice. IT IS MUCH NICER!!!!!!!

The owner was very nice he even allowed us to check in 2 hours earlier!

We are trying to figure out a reason to go back! It was so nice!!!!

Oh also it was a lovely quiet neighborhood. No rowdy parties on the weekend! I was very pleasant.

AWFUL! DISGUSTING! TERRIBLE If I could give zero stars would do!

  • 1 of 5

Dead skunk & maggots outside door upon arrival (PM did send someone to remove but smell remained). Hot tub dirty - not useable, exterior and interior of house dirty and in disrepair - needs paint and a lots of repairs. Mattresses need to be replaced - one in master bedroom stained with what appears to be semen, urine and ?? - ABSOLUTELY GROSS AND DISGUSTING! Sheets not crisp and clean. Photos DO NOT accurately represent property. We cleaned the deck, furniture, dishes, BBQ and kitchen sink. Some deck furniture broken or molded. BBQ leaks - safety hazard! Brick pathway in front is uneven and not adequately lit; there is a large electrical cord strung across the floor in the media room - another tripping hazard. Strong mold smell from basement came under kitchen door - "gym" in basement - no one was going down there!. Many spiders and webs inside and out. Have NO confidence this property was cleaned before our arrival. We read the reviews and looked at the photos which show outside greenery and a clean, gleaming interior. Sadly, this is not an accurate representation of the property; the photos should be deleted or updated and I question if the reviews were authentic. The interior is also in disrepair: paint is chipping, walls are dirty, mildew is apparent in every bathroom, ceiling has many patches and is discolored. The floors were filthy, tiles, grout and showers were filthy. Some chairs in the dining room were broken. The place was cleaner when we left than when we arrived! We entertained family and friends for a celebratory event; my husband and I were embarrassed by the condition of this house. Our group took photos to document also have text messages between PM and myself.. Makes me wonder if the reviews posted are authentic. Also wonder when this property was last inspected by anyone. I will be sending a complete letter to property management company and VRBO requesting an adjustment of our bill. HORRIBLE, AWFUL, DISGUSTING EXPERIENCE!

Owner's Response: A PRODUCT OF NATURE We are adjacent to Angeles National Forest. It has coyotes, bats, bears, mountain lions, rodents, snakes, possums, and skunks that visit the neighborhood. It’s part of the nature experience. The guest had two dogs. A dead skunk was found on the side patio closest to the National Forest. Housekeeping was at the property a few days earlier and did not notice a dead skunk. On guest notice, they immediately went to the property for disposal. It takes time to eliminate the smell. This affected the overall perception of the house and it went downhill from there. Guests who stayed there the week before (6 day stay-Sept. 15-21) had a fantastic time as can be seen in the posted review. The guest said they were making a list. We never received a list. Housekeeping commented that the guest was very upset and complained about everything. It was obvious that nothing she could do was going appease them. Housekeeping did find calcium deposits on a set of dark dishes from the LA hard water. Dishes were set aside and treated. With 3 sets of dishes in the house and not using one set did no harm. There was a call about a light and outdoor table conditions. The outdoor tables were cleaned previously but the tables and patio are under 25’ olive trees which drop olives. On notice, the electrician called with no answer. Management scheduled housekeeping and the electrician to come in the afternoon. When the electrician called again, he was told not to come because they were entertaining. Similarly, housekeeping went to the property and was denied access. We did the best we could during their 2 night stay with the above restrictions. Following departure, both housekeeping and the electrician made requested repairs while performing normal maintenance. LANDSCAPING DRYNESS Southern California has severe drought this year. Consequently, watering cycles are severely decreased and left the vegetation dry. A special trip made in October implemented various improvements and addressed the water problem. We anticipate a month for landscape recovery. COMPENSATION A $100 cleaning fee refund was offered as compensation for inconvenience. Crews are making continued property improvements, notwithstanding the exaggerations as a result of the skunk. We only received this review and a complaint to homeaway and emails demanding full compensation. Nothing stopped guests from using the property and entertaining for the weekend.

Comfortable and Spacious

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at the unique 'Altadena Estates' home was very comfortable and pleasant. Unfortunately we were unable to spend much time enjoying the outdoor spaces or nearby hiking, Jacuzzi, or peruse the massive collection of books because of wedding festivities in Pasadena. The home comfortably slept 11 and the large dining room table became the spot for enjoying games, dessert, and conversation. This home has the conveniences needed for an enjoyable stay, and the photographs give you a true sense of the estate. As stated by another reviewer, this home is filled with a variety of artwork and is more of a ‘cozy’ home.

Access to the Pasadena/LA area was straightforward and we were given clear household information. We were also contacted on several occasions during our 6 day stay to ask about our comfort and needs. We would stay here again if the need arises.

Owner's Response: It is always a pleasure to hear that guests have enjoyed the house. Over time guests have provided recommendations which we include to continue guest enjoyment. Currently (October) we have dedicated a week to incorporate improvements and welcome future guests to an enjoyable stay next to nature and minutes away for active LA.

Absolutely Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

On your way toward the property you drive past a horse stable and into a really nice community, which sets the tone for your stay. Upon passing through the gate, well-manicured plants adorn the grounds, creating a very inviting feel, and persisting across the property.

Though it’s not apparent right off the bat, the home is massive. There were seven of us, and it felt like we would’ve needed another 20 or 30 to make it seem like our group filled the indoor space. The home is long, which affords the occupants a lot of privacy, and if you were in the backyard for example, you’d be well out of earshot of someone in the master bedroom.

And then on the outside there are all kinds of lounging areas and nooks to take in your surroundings, which we loved. We made sure to follow the instructions and warm up the jacuzzi well in advance, and honestly didn’t have enough time to take in everything in the two nights we were there.

Our favorite part about the home however was how much character it has. This is the home of a very cultured and well-traveled family, and there are a host of statues, figures and paintings from all over the world, spanning a variety of African motifs. We absolutely loved the artwork, fascinating counter-culture literature, excellent record collection, and tons of great old movies lining the shelves in a couple of the rooms.

Our group cooked several meals, which we enjoyed either on the back patio deck, by the fire pit, or in the very proper dining room.

To be fair to the traveler relying on my reviews, I want to be clear that this is more of a ‘cozy’ home, and the furniture isn’t urban-contemporary or anything - but that really works for the way the home integrates into its surroundings, as you’re basically in the woods. You’re able to walk down the street to a pleasant nearby hike, and although we stayed close to home, Pasadena is a quick drive should you want to take in more ‘city’ life.

The owner was very accommodating and hospitable, and our stay was quite relaxing, and a place I would dearly like to return to.

Owner's Response: The home is at the base of the Angeles National Forest. You get as much nature as you want and you are only 20 minutes away from central Los Angeles (downtown). It is truly spacious and we are glad when visitors like our taste. It is a home away from home to us.
