This small home of 1400 sq ft is a three bedroom furnished cottage with two new full bathrooms and is located on 18 acres overlooking Hatch Pond, two and a half miles south of the town center of Kent, CT, 15 minutes to the Harlem Valley-Wingdale (Metro North) train station, minutes from area boarding schools and close to area ski slopes. The cottage is a perfect get away for city dwellers, parents visiting students at area schools and for those interested in getting a taste of the area before and while looking for a place to live.
The house sleeps five comfortably with one queen, one full and one twin bed, The sofa is very comfy for one, for a few nights. Five is the maximum number of guests. The washer and dryer are located in the basement. Cable television, wireless internet, a landline with free long distance and a cell tower across the pond will keep you connected to the world if you wish.
There are five other buildings on the compound that was formerly the Southern New England Ice Co. The owner uses the former bunkhouse as an antique gallery and farms a portion of the land with organic vegetables. 'Bunkhouse Antiques' is open on Saturdays from May through September , 10am to 4pm and shares the driveway with the house.
Hatch Pond is a haven for fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and bird watching. Privileges to share the boatshed located across the road are extended. Bring a kayak or canoe! Extended spring and summer guests may have a section of the vegetable garden to plant. Lots of lawn for outdoor games. Room in the garage to store bikes, skis, etc. Pick apples from the small orchard in the fall. No smoking indoors please. A nice clean well behaved dog is welcome.
My rates are listed below. The property is great all year round for different reasons at different seasons. No cleaning fees. No additional guest fees. Taxes are included in the stated rates. It is my preference to have guests for longer stays - monthly, seasonally. Ideally, I seek a summer tenant or two and a school year tenant. Therefore its hard for me to commit to a short stay, weekend even a week or two, sooner than 6 weeks out. I am glad to 'pencil' you in for a short stay far in advance but cannot make that a firm reservation until 6 weeks prior. Early checkin the day of your arrival and late checkout are usually not a problem - come early and stay late, make it a full vacation.

Welcome to Hatch Pond in South Kent, Connecticut. I am the property owner who lives in a home ten minutes drive from here. I consumated my love with this area twelve years ago when my partner and I bought a historic house as a weekend get away from NYC. I started out coming to the area for short weekend breaks from the city. It very quickly developed into a place where I wanted to spend more and more time. I moved my antique business here (to the former bunkhouse of the winter ice workers, about a hundred yards from the cottage). I still go back and forth to the city, but Kent has become HOME.
The Owner purchased this cottage in 2008
This cottage was on our scenic route to town and we always admired the property. When we discovered it for sale, we came up with a way of how to make the dream of owning it possible. I moved my business into the barn/bunkhouse (very small, appointment only antiques), renovated and furnished the cottage to rent for vacationers and began farming some vegetables.
Kent is admired for its beauty and variety. The beauty is obvious; the Housatonic River and the surrounding Litchfield Hills. The variety comes as a discovery after being here for a while. It is a community that has revealed its general openmindedness and 'live and let live' attitude.
Hatch Pond unfolds itself as a place of amazing beauty and serenity yet, very close to the many ammenities of the area. The ability to walk across the road to the boatshed and take in the morning or evening calm with a cup or glass of whatever is a magical elixir - come here and relax.
I think that you and yours will enjoy a stay here even for a brief time. Careful though, you may just fall in love with it yourself and find yourself looking for something a bit more permanent - nice folks, always welcome :-)
My boyfriend and I recently spent 4 wonderful days at Hatch Pond to celebrate my birthday and had the most lovely time. The Kent area is BEAUTIFUL! Everything was perfect and stress free and it was easy to get to from NYC. Tons of activities to keep us entertained like kayaking/canoeing on Hatch Pond and hiking on the Appalachian trail. The town of Kent is cute too and has shops and restaurants, but we really enjoyed just being in the cottage cooking, relaxing and unplugging from the world (though there is a TV with cable if you want!).
The cottage itself is great and well maintained--tons of modern fixtures, wifi, comfy beds and kitchen gadgets while still retaining a real country feel and charm. Even though it was summer it felt cool inside with the fans that we didn't even really use the window cooler. Huge bonus is the amazing garden that Michael, the owner, maintains. Nothing beats walking outside and picking some fresh basil right off the stalk and making a delicious pesto. Speaking of Michael, he is the best!!! He met us at the house, gave us the tour, told us about some of the local highlights and was there as needed. It's really obvious how much he loves the house and the Kent area, all of the great antiques lovingly displayed in the cottage are handpicked by him. You can even visit his antique shop The Bunkhouse to pick up a little treasure of your own to take home.
Overall, highly recommend this gem, would love to go back!
The perfect escape - close enough to NYC that travel is not a problem, but far enough away that you forget about the city. My girlfriend and I were there for 10 days, but we could have easily stayed the entire summer. The cottage itself is a gem, beautifully decorated with antiques (collected by the owner) that really make the place feel like a home. Rustic charm, but with beautifully updated bathrooms, comfy bedrooms, cable television (although I doubt you'll want to turn on the TV), wi-fi, stereo and kitchen. Then there are the grounds, immaculately maintained with a terrific garden. We picked squash, tomatoes, garlic, broccoli, basil, kale (and more). The owner, Michael, doesn't advertise 'free food', but he does encourage you to take whatever you want from the garden. It was an unexpected extra.
Located just minutes from the center of town, a picture perfect Main St., brimming with antique shops, great dining, a cozy bookstore, artisanal cheese, coffee and chocolate shops. A little further up the road is Kent Falls, a beautiful park to picnic or bbq and hike up the Falls.
We did all that, but the best part of each day was just relaxing outside the cottage. Sitting on Adirondack chairs on a hill overlooking the lovely Hatch Pond. Reading, relaxing, decompressing. We've never had that sort of vacation - ever. We came back to the city feeling incredibly refreshed, but we're already dying to go back. Thanks, Michael!
Our family with two kids ages 6 and 9 were lucky enough to rent the beautiful Hatch Pond cottage for June and July. It is an easy drive or train ride from NYC and a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the beauty of Kent and Litchfield county. Highlights include kayaking on Hatch pond, playing ping pong in the boathouse, relaxing on the beautiful grounds near the house and near the pond, and enjoying the bounty of amazing vegetables and herbs from the garden! The owner is very caring, friendly and simply a wonderful person and host. The house is very comfortable and charming with lots of nooks and crannies and cozy places to read and relax. We highly recommend Hatch Pond!
We had a picture perfect Thanksgiving weekend on Hatch Pond in this lovely cozy house. Can't wait to come back for more when the pond isn't frozen! But even in the cold, the woods were lovely, and the stars at night were bright and beautiful. The wood burning stove kept us warm (with some help from the perfectly modern thermostat-control heating in every room). And the kitchen was stocked with everything we needed to make a delicious turkey dinner. Overall, the experience was everything we were hoping for, and we'd recommend this tasteful, comfortable house to anyone looking for a cozy country getaway.
My family and I had the pleasure of renting this beautiful cottage on Hatch Pond for the month of July 2013. We loved everything about it - the tasteful decor, across the street location of Hatch Pond with access to a boat shed full of kayaks and canoes, proximity to the center of town which is filled with chic boutiques, great restaurants, and grocery stores, and most of all, the fabulous grounds of the house which include an amazing vegetable garden which has a variety of herbs, vegetables, fruits, lettuces, etc, and last but not least - the owner Michael. Michael was so fantastic, generous and hospitable and made our stay even better. The house is fully stocked with every modern amenity you need, all you have to do is bring yourself! This place is not to be missed! A very easy commute from NYC and a great central location in Lichtfield County from which to explore the surrounding areas.
I am a teacher at a nearby prep school who rented the Hatch Pond cottage for the last two school years (Sept-May) and had a wonderful experience. The cottage is comfortable and very well appointed. There is great cell reception (ATT) and wireless for those, like me, who need to work while staying at the cottage. The setting is just beautiful all year round. There is lots of space outside and although there are neighbors nearby, it is very private. The town of Kent is 3 miles away and is only one of Litchfield County's many beautiful small towns. There are lots of restaurant options within 20 minutes of the cottage. Finally, I have never had a better landlord. He is flexible, easy to reach, and happy to address reasonable concerns. He keeps the place in beautiful shape because he so obviously loves it. He is there when you need him but respects his renter's privacy. I hated to leave this great little spot.
Kent is part of the Litchfield Hills which are just below The Berkshires and is located on the Housatonic River. Kent is a one streetlight town with quintessential New England charm.
