Perfect little cottage for us!

  • 5 of 5

I've been debating on writing a review because I don't want to give away this hidden gem.

Our family stayed in this cottage and it was perfect for us! If you are high maintence and need fancy furnishings and brand new appliances etc., then this place is not for you! We thought the location, the view, the vegetation surrounding the cottage and the wildlife made up for the minor issues we found. We mainly went for the beach and total relaxation which we more than got! There are plenty of resturants on Captiva and Sanibel if you choose to dine out. We cooked breakfast and lunch everyday and 5 out 7 dinners. The kitchen was well stocked as far as we were concerned.

We have been to Sanibel many times in the past and this was our favorite. The separate cottage was a huge plus! It provided plenty of privacy so you don't feel you are right on top of each other if you go with a group. The air conditioner in the bathroom was strange at first but we got used to it. I mean how much time do you really spend in your room anyways!? About the windows, anyone that has ever been to Florida knows that it rains a lot and there's an abundance of salt air. Even if they were to clean the windows after every rental they would still get dirty everyday from the salt air alone. Once we got there and settled, we cleaned them up a bit, taking all of 5 minutes. It definitely helped the view! I hope others get to enjoy this charming cottage as much as we did. We'll definitely return!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for the wonderful review and taking the chance of exposing this hidden gem! We'll always hold the home for you if you re-book shortly after arrival:)! You are spot on with the appointments of the home as it is not newer but what a location! We are thrilled this is your favorite home for a vacation and it is apparent you are experienced with the window comment! Thank you so much and we hope to see you soon.

great little place, perfect location

  • 5 of 5

This lovely cottage was perfect for our family, grandparents, myself and 2 teenagers. It is just across the road from a lovely beach, no crowds there when we were staying. Minor problems (eg running out of gas for the barbecue) were dealt with promptly and without fuss. Recommended

Not worth the high rental cost

  • 3 of 5

While the cottage was charming and a suitable size there were many things I found to be lacking especially at the price point for the rental. I was expecting a fully useable kitchen because I cook and bake but I did not have everything I needed. Cabinet doors would not stay closed and I would have to be careful not to bang my head. Dishwasher only cleaned items on the bottom rack. Everything in the kitchen was tired, run down and very old. The HVAC unit did not work properly we would wake up to freezing temperatures and the thermostat would read otherwise and the heat would do the same with very high temperatures. Only certain windows could be used because they didn't operate or the frame around the window was rotten. All the bath towels had to be washed because they were new and were shedding excessively which led us to shaking them outdoors and sweeping up the lint. This project took most the day because the washer could only handle two towels at a time.

On the positive side the cottage is charming. There are beautiful beach views and private beach access with stellar sunsets. The windows were so dirty that it was hard to see out and that is disappointing. The outdoor deck was very comfortable and a wonderful place to grill and dine. The separate cottage with bedroom was a bonus and served us well, however, the window a/c unit next to the toilet was odd and did now cool the bedroom adequately. The location was perfect distance for walking and biking and restaurants. My hang up is the price of the rental with the kitchen needing so many updates and the cleanliness. I would rent there again if upgrades were made, repairs to the HVAC were done and it was given a thorough cleaning.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We are glad that you found the deck comfortable for grilling and dining and that the home location perfect. We would agree that the kitchen would be well served by an upgrade(our description on vrbo and our website states-"older finishes throughout including the original kitchen"). This probably is not the kitchen for you if you are hope to spend a lot of time in the kitchen. If you want to spend a lot of time at the beach this home has a lot to offer. We are sorry this home was not a good match for you. We have found that a good conversation with a potential guest about their needs and expectations is very helpful. Please do not hesitate to call and we will go over the highlights and shortcomings of a specific home. Because of these characteristics and the fact that the home is older(historic actually!), we priced this unit to be one of the best priced single family, beachfront(must cross the street) homes on Captiva and feel the value is there. We appreciate your knowledge from use of the home and will utilize it to correct the issues with the cabinet doors, dishwasher and HVAC. At any time during a stay; we are ready, willing and able to address items like this, please call and we'll be right out! We are glad you found the cottage charming, appreciated the beautiful beach views and private access to the beach and stellar sunsets. Thank you again for taking the time to write this review.

Perfect location. Looks just like the pictures

  • 4 of 5

This is a very cute house. Perfect location right across from the beach and if you don't mind walking close enough to walk to town to eat dinner and watch the sunset at the Muckey Duck. With a few updates it would be a 5. The separate bed/bath is very nice for privacy for more than one couple. The biggest drawback was the king bed was the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept on and the TVs in the bedrooms need updating. Overall my entire family enjoyed this rental

very relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from our first visit to Captive. The Cottage was exceptional. Quiet, clean, convenient to the beach and to the village. The "honeymoon cabin" housed our son, his wife and their dog. My wife and I enjoyed the house itself. This for us was the PERFECT Captiva stay. Unpretentious, comfortable and very functional. We want to return next summer. We watched from the deck as Porpoises were swimming in the gulf.

We really enjoyed our stay at this cottage. The gulf view was great and the house worked well for our family which included my in-laws. The separate bedroom was great for their privacy. It was very conveniently located near town and right across the street from the beach. We spent a lot of time on the deck area though it is showing signs of wear. We hope to return next year.
