The first thing people usually say after arriving at the Posada Colonial is that 'The pictures don't do it justice'. We are confident from our reviews that you, your family and your friends will feel the same way. And guests who book with us have exclusive use of the home and property. It is not shared with others, so absolute privacy is assured.

We are central, yet secluded, with patios, balconies and grounds looking on to the world famous Arenal Volcano. This Almendro home has a wrap-around balcony, is gated and very private. We have WI-fi, cable and Sky TV, indoor and outdoor dining with flowers, birds and butterflies everywhere. It is a natural paradise.

We are near the charming town of La Fortuna, and our area is famous for its diversity of interests. These include bird watching, river rafting, jungle cruises, jungle canopy tours, butterfly farms, horseback riding, world famous spas and hot springs or relaxing and enjoying the best views of the spectacular Arenal Volcano. And because we are well located on the main road, all is within easy access. We encourage everyone who is planning on visiting to read the reviews of our home to help determine your decision for your visit to this lovely part of the world.

We have been a Bed and Breakfast for about 15 years, with excellent reviews in the guide books, Our housekeeper/cook Miriam is local, friendly, helpful and has developed a great reputation for her breakfasts, which you can read about in the reviews. She is the soul of the place.

Security: Although the property is on the main road, with easy access to all the local attractions, it is gated, fenced, on a partial rise, and thus very safe and private. The newly formed 'tourist police' make regular checks with all the property owners.

About Grant Carlson

I'm a Canadian who came here in 1993 for a combination of adventure and investment. I built a home in La Palma overlooking Arenal Volcano, and because of the shortage of places for people to stay gradually became involved in tourism. It has been a wonderful experience meeting people from all over the world. When it comes to the wonders of nature, everyone reacts in a similar way. Awe, respect, wonder and delight.

Grant Carlson purchased this house in 1995

Why Grant Carlson chose San Carlos

When I decided on Costa Rica as a place to live in and invest I knew very little about the country, apart from its positive reputation. It was only later that I realized I needed a 'where' in Costa Rica. After driving around the country for a week or so I arrived in La Fortuna and immediately knew that this was where I wanted to be. It was something I still can't explain. I built the home, which eventually evolved into a B and B, about two years after arriving. I drove a fifth wheel down here from Vancouver and lived in that until my home was complete.

What makes this house unique

The Nicaraguan and Costa Rican people Ive become friends with over the years have enhanced my life immeasurably. As well. the climate, the greenery, fresh air, the birds and, of course, the volcano, all serve to make this area a very special place in the world.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Two friends and I recently visited Arenal and stayed at this wonderful home just outside of La Fortuna. We had a great time, mostly because of the wonderful hospitality of the owner and his staff. The home itself is beautiful with wonderful views of the volcano and rainforest. Grant went out of his way to help us plan our stay: he helped set up various excursions and provided great recommendations on things to do. Miriam cooked amazing breakfasts every morning, and we couldn't have asked for more. It made everything so easy. If I ever return to Arenal, I will certainly want to stay here again!

We have a housekeeper who will have everything prepared for your arrival. The house is situated on the Rio La Palma which is a short hike down to the bottom of the property. Across the small river, actually a large creek, is jungle. Monkeys visit regularly but at times known only to them. We have feeders so there are always plenty of birds around. Deer, wild boar, pesote, and other animals have also been sited. Of course there is an abundance of flowers as well. It s a very comfortable home which fits into the surrounding ambiance quite naturally. There are interesting views everywhere. It is private and enclosed yet near everything the area has to offer.

This place was amazing! The house was so pretty and the wrap around decks on both floors made for spectacular views of toucans, the volcano, and a lot of other wildlife. The caretaker was awesome and her breakfasts were delicious. It is in a great location. The hike down to the river was a great activity and the dogs on the property were so well behaved. We fell in love with them. I cannot say enough positive things about this property. The owner was great to work with and I would go back in a heartbeat. if you are looking for a great place to stay that is close to lot's of activity, yet is a quiet and relaxing place to chill out and enjoy nature, this is the place for you.

Nice and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a few days while we explored Arenal and the hot springs. The house is a little old, but big and open and clean, and all the little details were there just like a hotel (soap, shampoo, etc). We loved the outside, felt like you were in your own little paradise, and my son practically lived in one of the hammocks! Breakfast was delicious both days, and Miriam was attentive and let us pick our time. The only negative is that the house is situated close to the main road, so though it is sheltered so you don’t see all the cars, you can hear them and if you’re a light sleeper like me it may wake you up in the morning.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review, and we appreciate it very much. We had to remove the old growth trees along the roadside because we felt they were becoming a danger to traffic and and also to the electric wires (our wiring on the property is all underground). We planted new trees last July intending to prevent any possible erosion as well as to stem any traffic noise. They are not fully grown yet but we've been assured that once they are a meter high with the roots established, and they're almost there, they will grow very quickly and that problem will be resolved. I'll certainly pass your fine compliments along to Miriam. Cheers and all the very best, Grant

Don't Miss This Gem

  • 5 of 5

I cannot say enough about the home, the location, the surroundings, the ambience, the birds, the broad creek and the service. It is centrally located at the top of a small hill with steady though gentle breeze from the Atlantic coming through the interesting trees to keep things cool. There is occasional noise from the main road but Grant and Miriam have plenty of lime/yellow trees to act as a noise barrier and they're growing very quickly.

As others have mentioned before us, Miriam is a jewel and the breakfasts are wonderful. No one will ever leave the long wooden patio table empty. My family also used the guest house and at just $20 per person extra per night over the initial amount it was very good value.

An easy five stars.

Didn't Want to Leave!

  • 5 of 5

This was our third stay on this property - wonderful, restful, and very peaceful. Not too far from town - but just far enough! Wonderful birds - including toucans - made Miriam's breakfasts even more enjoyable. Wished we could have stayed longer and hope to return!

Authentic home with stunning volcano views in a great location !

  • 4 of 5

Exceeded our expectations, especially in regard to the views and setting. We loved the solid teak construction with open beamed ceilings and wrap around deck to soak in the view and sounds of the forest. Breakfast on the patio every morning was delightful and Miriam is sweet and gracious. The location is absolutely perfect for getting to/from many Arenal area excursions such as zip lining, hanging bridges, coffee tours, thermal and eco parks, etc., and is just down the road from La Fortuna with many great restaurant options. There are three very friendly dogs (2 small, one medium) on the property that are looked after by Miriam. They made us feel even more secure and were waiting behind the gates whenever we came home after a day out. They have exceptional manners; and don’t even try to come into the house even when the doors are kept wide-open !

The beds were comfortable enough and there are fans in all rooms which kept the air moving nicely. The detached guesthouse is charming and has fantastic views however the early morning traffic sounds from the main road can be quite loud. The front and back gardens are beautiful and full of flowers and tropical plants. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay and all wished it had been longer. Highly recommended!

Car: recommended

The area has many famous natural springs heated underground by the Volcano, and is also famous for its birds and other wild life, and its easy access to rain forests, Lake Arenal is the largest lake in Costa Rica and just a few minutes away by car.and is known for world famous rafting and wind surfing Of course there are canopy tours, horse rentals to the famous La Fortuna waterfall (and other areas as well). It's very easy to fill in an entire week enjoying all the natural activities in the area without doing the same thing twice. The property is not all that difficult to find and I always remind people to ask the locals. It actually is an opportunity to talk to these very friendly people.

I'm not certain which direction you'll be coming fom so will give you both. It's about a three hour drive from San Jose through some very pretty country. The roads are good but two lanes for much of the way, so take your time and leave earlyish.

After you leave the airport you'll see a sign saying Nicaragua and the North and the main Pan American highway. You'll travel northerly for perhaps an hour until you see San Ramon where you'll turn off and you can only turn right. Keep going in much the same general direction until you get to the outskirts of town and then watch for signs saying La Fortuna, or symbols of the Volcano, In case of any concern at all please just ask directions to La Fortuna. Everyone knows it and they enjoy helping guests to their country. Just point and ask "La Fortuna?".

Once you arrive in La Fortuna you'll see an Alamo rental car outlet on the Volcano side of the town, a couple of blocks west of the Church. This is the main road which will take you to our place.

About a mile out of town you'll see a supermarket which might be a good place to stock up on things you may need. Then continue your journey in the same direction passing Las Lagos, Baldi and then, a little later, a small bridge with a large sign on the right saying Volcano Lodge. Just a little bit more and there is a long natural rock fence and our property is at the end of that fence so slow down and prepare to turn. A sharp left will take you under the archway and then you park wherever you want. Someone will be there to greet you very soon. The large home you see in front of you is yours. If we don't see you right away just make yourselves at home because we'll be around somewhere. Our coordinates are

10.5019° N, 84.6914° W

If you're coming from Liberia turn right at the main Pan American highway until you reach Canas and then go left along the main road there. There should be lots of signs and if you are at all unsure please don't hesitate to ask. There is a bit of a tricky turn once you're in Tilaran so be careful there. Otherwise just ask as the people are very friendly and enjoy getting involved.

Once you pass the town of Arenal you'll eventually come to a dam and we're about 10-15 minutes from there. You'll soon see Tabacon Resort and then, on your left, Montana del Fuego and Paraiso Resort. Then slow down because you'll see a sign saying Posada Colonial on the right, which is us. Park anywhere and we'll be watching for you. If we don't see you right away just make yourselves at home because we'll be around somewhere.

Our phone number here is 2479-1594.

Wishing you all a pleasant and safe journey.
