The University of Hawaii Hilo Astronomy Center offers exhibits and shows that could fill an entire day. The Tsunami museum tells all about Hilo, how it was affected by tsunamis and how it was restored to what it is now.
Hike through lava tubes big enough for a bus, check out the steam vents as natural saunas, see ancient petroglyphs, snorkel over colorful live coral reefs, swim with giant sea turtles and schools of tropical fish, see lava pour into the ocean as it creates new land.
There are great mountain bike and hiking trails. Did I mention the Volcano National Park? The visitors center also has a great exhibit of the wildlife and history of Hawaii including a theater with hourly shows of the same.
Then a short drive to the Kileaua gift shop with a cafeteria and restaurant overlooking the huge caldera as steam rises from many spots within, which also can be hiked into and across.
You'll love strolling through historic Hilo Town, as it's the origin of the Hawaiian culture. This quaint, turn of the century town with it's Victorian and plantation style architecture will charm you with it's shops, stores, art studios, and restaurants.
One of the biggest Farmers Markets is there in old town with the best and most diverse selection of produce and flowers from local farmers you can imagine, as well as many artisans and merchants selling their goods in the many booths.
As I mentioned, our warm, clean, cozy garden cottage couldn't be more centrally located from all these activities and sites, this is a great place for your Hawaiian home base.
We can offer guided tours, surf lessons, mountain bike excursions, as well as just point you in the right direction. Call us with any questions and ask about our special rates for seniors.

My wife, Barbara and I, Michael, are generally very active. We love to hike and bike right here from home as well as surf, swim, and snorkel in the warm waters near by. I'm an artistic, creative carpenter/builder that built our home here in '05 and recently finished building the cottage on the same 3 acres (far enough apart to maintain mutual privacy). Barbara is a waitress at the best restaurant in the area). Pineapples Island Cuisine, in downtown Hilo. We love what we do, and are thankful to have a piece of paradise. Come experience old Hawaii, you won't want to leave.
Barbara Genaro purchased this cottage in 2009
We bought here 15 years ago after many years living on Maui (nice place to visit but you want to live here). It's Old Hawaii, not so touristy. And when they say the 'Big Island' they mean it. You can buy acres here compared to square feet. It's all spread out and roomy. You don't even see your neighbors in these rural areas but at the same time everyone is generally very warm and easy to get to know. It's a very friendly place to visit and live.
When your here you'll feel like the only people on the planet, other than an occasional and distant passer by. You'll be taken by the unspoiled Hawaiian landscape and the sounds of birds singing. Sunrise is my favorite time, but sunset is pretty awesome too, from our lanai.
I stayed here with my boyfriend Shannon and our friend Tod this past August. Barb and Mike were excellent hosts and very welcoming- we even had a little tequila together! The grounds are lovely and you will get a piece of the Big Island experience while staying here. The cottage was great for 3 people- we were very relaxed for the 5 nights we stayed! The loft is pretty cool as well. The outside shower is lovely in the rain. Thanks again for having us Barb and Mike!
Instead of private cottage is was a tiny dark room, loft was advertised for kids but is highly unsecure. Water rainwater, not treated, no hot water. Room was extremely hot, refrigerator very loud, we hardly sleep because as soon as you lie down on the bed a lot of insects starts crawling on you. Owners told it is a fruit flies. If you turn oven, the power goes off, if you turn on microwave power goes off. One bulb in the ceiling. Mattress wet and foam rubber rotten. Never saw something so cheap looking. And insects were the worse.
After sleeping a night, having a headache we approach the owners and ask what if we will move away. Mike, the owner came to us and agree to give a refund for 3 days left. We went to the hotel. 2 weeks later still no check, I tried to contact owner, they did not call back. When I finally reach Barbara, she told she is not planing to sent us money (as her husband promise to us) because "we were difficult from the beginning, run away because of just 4 fruit flies and she can rent it to somebody else". Then she just drop the call. I very often use VRBO for vacation rentals and never had such as experience. The most amazing part that they agree fast to refund us, probably knowing they will not do it. By the way, for the same price we got a nice renovated hotel with AC and clean beds, not rotten mattress and fruit flies.
Even we local folks need to "get away from it all" once in awhile. And what a nourishing and calming experience it was to stay at Barb and Michael's cozy cottage. They can be as friendly as all get out or leave you well-enough alone. Perfect! The cottage is "cabin-like" as someone else mentioned and thus has a going to a summer home feel to it--like when we were kids maybe, going to visit our grandparents. How comforting is that? On the other hand, it is so convenient to just everything so there's no doing without fun and activities. The outside shower is an amazing experience--even when it's raining! The kitchen has everything you need, EVERYTHING--just bring what you like to eat! And, we go to bring our two little dogs, the first family vacation they have ever been able to experience with us : ) So many Mahalos Barb and Michael.
Hello! We have been there end of April for 4 nights. Yes a true hawaian experience would be a good description. From my point of view it is more a cabin then a cottage. Very quiet in the nature. I loved the "jungle look" around. Peaceful. In the morning all you can hear is the bird waking up and at night the frog concerto.
Barbara was a great geo, telling us where to go. No tourist, lots of reef fish, giant turtles. Close to the volcano park, by the way, it cost 10$ per car and the entry is valid for the week... good to know for activity planning. Ask Barbara about the Carl's beach turtle spot and the scuba diving spot. queens bath super nice too.
Beeing north american, I was a bit surprise by the outdoor shower but getting use to it, it was a nice experience. I would have like the curtain all around though :)... at least the 2 first time :)))..
We were 2 girls and we felt perfectly safe. I would defenetely go back and could bring my kids. Note that You have to plan a couple of bottle of fresh water as water is coming from rain water reservoir.
Thank you so much for that pleasant stay, we really appreciated your hospitality and we are referring your place for the people who likes camping and outdoor. This is not a 5 stars bling bling hotel but for us it was a 5 stars adventure.
All the best

If you are ready to get away from the crowds and experience the real Hawaii, this is the place for you. Set in the middle of 3 acres of rainforest, the only sounds you hear are the birds, frogs, and the occasional car. Barbara and Michael love their property and it shows in the care of construction, furnishings, and the way the landscaping blends with the natural surroundings. The cottage was very clean and fully furnished with all of the necessities. The hosts are welcoming and dedicated to helping you enjoy your stay at their bit of paradise.
This place was great! It is in a great location to see Volcanoes National Park as well as take in the sites on the East side of the island. This cottage is nestled in among the tress and beautiful foliage of the island. We were serenaded by croqui frogs every night and birds in the morning. The outdoor shower is a lot of fun. This isn't a four star plush resort but more of a rustic experience. Still had hot and cold running water, flushing toilets and everything you need to cook for yourself (to help save on expenses while on the island). Barb and Mike are great hosts. They helped us find the best places for snorkeling. They also referred us to a fantastic restaurant that we ended up eat at TWICE!!! This was our first experience on the Big Island we fell in love with it!!!
We have a 2 person kayak, beach chairs, snorkel gear, bikes, lots of great adventures to share, close to Volcanoes National Park where the lava is bubbling right now. Many places to snorkel, warm or cold ponds to swim in, great white sand beach with inside reef, to keep it safe for moms and dads with babies and kids. The Zoo is close by as well and many farmers markets with local produce and fruit..
