Why the Owner Chose San Pedro: Belize is a land of many different cultures living in an unusually harmonious way. English is the official language and the country is governed according to English Law. It is a land of astounding beauty, and one of the last parts of the Caribbean to be fully explored. We were mesmerized with the beauty of the Caribbean water, the sky and the island of Ambergris Caye. This was a place where we knew we wanted to be. Our varied backgrounds includes (among other professions) design and building, and we wanted to build a home that was a 'work of art and spirituality', to be shared with all who chose to visit.

Relaxing Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We recently enjoyed a week long stay at Casa Rana. Richard, Diana, James, and Bea took very good care of us. I wanted to address some of the thing I read and/or concerns I had when we planned this trip.

First, getting to Casa Rana. My wife hates small planes and turbulence in general. Because of this we arranged transport with Nautilus Water Taxi. When we arrived it was very windy with white capped waves. It was too rough to go by water taxi. We were met getting off the jet by Nautilus representatives who explained the situation and arranged plane transport for us. We were on the plane within 30 minutes and received a refund for the outgoing trip. The plane was packed with just enough room for sardines, but was quick, comfortable, and quite honestly fun. People were going on vacation after all and we laughed most of the way there. My wife even enjoyed the ride. Quite a shock. We did the return trip by Nautilus water taxi. It was a beautiful ride lasting about an hour and a half. They met us at Casa Rana dock and escorted us right to the airport. That said, I would have no problems with either mode of transport. Michele and the Nautilus crew were great and I feel this transport felt like we were extending our vacation. Personally, I would go water taxi again.

Next the house. It is a beautiful and comfortable home. We tend to be with those that enjoy air conditioning. Here, we did not have any problems. The bedrooms are air conditioned and the house enjoys breezes to the point that we did not miss central air. So, don't sweat the AC issue. No pun intended.

Richard and Diana are very knowledgable and make themselves available if you so desire. If you prefer relaxing, you would never know they lived out back. They are friendly and enjoyable people, not intrusive at all. The same goes for James and Bea. James was great at masking reservation at restaurants and Bea is a wonderful cook. In fact, Bea cooked for us three of the seven nights. You have to have her key lime pie.

Getting around the Caye by golf cart was an adventure to say the least. It was more like an olympic slalom event. The dirt roads are very potted. It costs about 300 for the week and I felt it was worth it even though we didn't use it every day. It does offer you some freedom. The house is seven miles north of town, so this is valuable. That said, Richard and James can arrange water taxi service to restaurants.

All told, this was a great vacation. I highly recommend this property.

Perfection in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

What do you want in your vacation? Beautiful home? Perfect location? Your own personal snorkeling paradise? Helpful, unobtrusive owners? Wonderful household caretakers? This property has all that and more. We traveled with our 2 adult children, 3 couples in all and this property created an environment of relaxation and fun, a mere 30 paces from the wonderfully warm and gently lapping Caribbean Sea. The owner, Richard was supportive to multiple emails prior to our arrival with questions as diverse as how to book excursions, to what type of coffee filters were needed. He did not rely on email only but actually called to ensure there was no confusion regarding our vacation. He truly empathized with our need to pre-plan to ensure this big, family vacation was successful. Diana, who owns the property with Richard, greeted us and gave us a wonderful house tour, welcoming us to her little piece of nirvana, then leaving us to enjoy each others company and the beautiful setting. Bea and James, the caretakers, were amazing from Bea's fabulous cooking to James taking the time to fish with us, prepare coconuts for our drinking pleasure, and confirm planned excursions. The reef off the palapa contains schools of fish, various rays, conch, and an adorable, green morey eel, now named Ursula.

Travel with your own snorkel gear: you can rent it but having it handy made it easy to take advantage of the onsite reef

Don't overpack, we spend the entire trip in our bathing suits

Take advantage of Bea's cooking. We had our 2 best meals on the island right at the house. Bea cooked us a typical Belizean chicken dinner upon our arrival, then cooked up the fish we caught another night.

Utilize James' local knowledge. Enjoy his help to fish off the dock, explore the island and get to know him. He is a great guy.

Rent golf carts and go toward town. Great beach bars, and fun sites to be found with an adventuresome spirit. It is worth traversing the pot-hole laden roads.

Go! Have Fun! This is the place to be!

Relaxing and rejuvenating

  • 5 of 5

My adult children with their spouses and my husband and I spent the week before Christmas at Casa Rana. We found it to be beautiful and relaxing! Highlights included: cave tubing and zip lining in Belize one day, Scuba Diving, and fishing off the dock with James the caretaker. He and his wife Bea were fantastic! They attended to every detail with accommodating all of our requests and Bea cooked us 3 delicious meals. We also had great meals at Portofino, Mambos and Costa Blu - all easily accessed by walking or a water taxi. The house is beautifully decorated and well equipped, but the pool is very small and there are only two lounge chairs which made it difficult for 6 adults to hang out by the pool. Overall, for a relaxing and beautiful tropical get-away, Casa Rana at Ambergris Caye is very special and a wonderful place to create lasting family memories!

Owner's Response: Dear Brenda, It was a genuine pleasure to host you and your family, and we are happy that you had a good time. I would like to make a clarification for our future guests regarding the pool area. First of all, we describe the pool as a plunge pool, not a full size pool. We think it's perfect. In 7 years we have had more than 200 groups of guests. You are the very first family to make a comment that the pool was too small. Additionally, there are 2 chaise lounges and 6 extremely comfortable, and expensive, Adirondack chairs with cushions on the deck. They can easily be moved for 'hanging out' together. Also, there are individual foot stools for each chair. Besides the pool area, we have a private dock and palapa with 2 more comfortable Adirondack chairs. Our opinion is that there is more than adequate chaise lounges and chairs to satisfy our guests.

Wonderful stay at Casa Rana

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I chose to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary at Casa Rana. Our stay was perfect - the house and grounds are beautiful . We particularly loved sitting under the palapa talking and soaking up the beautiful view - it is truly a magical place.

The owners of Casa Rana, Richard and Diana, are extremely helpful regarding activity and restaurant suggestions The caretakers, James and Bea are a delight. Bea prepared two delicious meals. James arranged restaurant reservations and water taxi pick up as well as coordinating a private fishing, snorkeling, and beach BBQ excursion.

We would love to visit Casa Rana again and have recommended this beautiful home to all our friends!

Very nice property away from town and very well appointed. Many comfortable living areas

  • 5 of 5

Casa Rana was a very nice place to spend our week in Ambergris Caye. We had 6 adults and plenty of room to move about both inside and outside. Richard and Diana, the owners, are very helpful in making the stay enjoyable. Bee and James, the onsite caretakers are terrific and willing to help as much as needed. We fished off the dock one day and caught enough fish for dinner that night. Bee cooked for us 2 nights and her food was fantastic- her key lime pie was the best. You will definitely want to rent golf carts as the ride to town is a 30 minute kidney busting ride but is fun to make the trek into the city. The snorkeling trip was the best we have been on when considering how many different fish, turtles, sharks and rays we saw. The trip to the Mayan ruins was interesting but not something I would do again. It was a whole day event and quite expensive. We enjoyed our evenings sitting outside enjoying the warmth of the Caribbean and the sound of the waves hitting the barrier reef. If you are seeking a house to relax and enjoy the peacefulness of the area - Casa Rana is a place we would highly recommend

Recent stay at Casa Rana

  • 5 of 5

My family of 5 and I recently stayed a week here and it was everything and more! Richard did a great job lining up all of our daily adventures, we did it ALL as an active family! Diana did a wonderful job on the home, it has everything you need and they are great at making sure you have all you need, wonderful hosts. James and Bea (property employees) were VERY helpful as well... James helped educate my kids on the island, they fished, cleaned conch shells, snorkeled right at the dock (they have their own man-made reef)… And Bea is a phenomenal cook!!! She cooked for us two of the nights (was amazing), we went out to Mambo a couple nights (was great) and we cooked the fish we caught a couple nights. In hindsight we would have used Bea more. It was a wonderful family vacation and it is everything they described and more.
