Kenwood House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

Kenwood Cottage is located in the heart of Sonoma's wine country and the town of Kenwood. This two bedroom vacation home is walking distance to Sugarloaf Ridge State Park and biking distance to some of the premiere wineries in the region.

This idyllic cottage rests on a year round creek in the historic Adobe Canyon and is situated in a bucolic setting. With private gardens, luminous canyon scenery and wildlife spilling through your cottage windows, you can walk to hiking trails that lead over bridges and waterfalls to spectacular vistas. Picnic at Sugarloaf Ridge or hike to Bald Mountain with 360º views of Northern California and the Golden Gate Bridge. Spend an evening at the Robert Ferguson Observatory at Sugarloaf Park stargazing and learning about current astronomical events.

The interior design was commissioned by Gracer West Interiors, and meticulously executed by lead designer Margaret Gross. With an eye for sophistication, simplicity and beauty, this “French Country” cottage is artfully appointed with many of the amenities of a 5 star resort. There is a spa/hot tub only a few steps from the master suite overlooking the creek, with exquisite views of the stars, mountains and the majestic trees that surround this private oasis.

This year we remodeled the kitchen and bathroom along with many other upgrades to make your stay more modern and enjoyable. Take a look at our pictures and more posted on our website, kenwoodcottage dot com.

Kenwood is in the heart of the Valley of the Moon and is considered one of the premiere towns in Sonoma's wine country. This retreat offers privacy and serenity, yet is only minutes to some of the best wineries in the region.

Each room at the cottage was thoughtfully crafted with our guest’s comfort in mind. From plush down comforters and 100% cotton linens, to all the amenities of a gourmet kitchen, the cottage is a place for true pampering & relaxation. Each room at Kenwood Cottage has been given detailed attention for our guest's satisfaction.

Our beds are top of the line Serta pillow-top mattresses. The master bedroom opens up to the back deck where the hot tub/spa are a just a few steps from your room.

The outdoor spa is set on the back deck overlooking Sonoma Creek - the largest year-round creek at the Valley of the Moon.

Sip our bottle of complimentary wine while you take a dip in the hot tub under starry nights or have your breakfast on one of the several outdoor tables thoughtfully placed around the cottage. An outdoor grill (Weber gas grill) and fully equipped kitchen is ready for your culinary artistry.

While there are plenty of wineries to choose from in Sonoma Valley, should you decide to experience more of what the wine country has to offer, the Kenwood Cottage is centrally located to the other wine regions. Driving times to other famous regions from the Kenwood Cottage are as follows:

Napa valley 40 minutes

Carneros Region 20 min

Calistoga 30 min

Russian River 25 min

Healdsburg / Dry Creek Valley 30 min.

About Laura Best

We are a happily married couple of over 33 years and live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Wayne is the chief economist at a Fortune 500 firm and Laura spends time with their two grown daughters and manages the Kenwood Cottage. We enjoy cooking, wine tasting, relaxing, travel and sight seeing; all of these we found at the Kenwood Cottage!

Laura Best purchased this house in 2006

Why Laura Best chose Sonoma County

Kenwood is a small town in the heart of Sonoma Valley. We spent over 5 years looking for just the right place in the wine country. Once we became familiar with the differences between Sonoma and Napa, we really started looking hard at Sonoma due to its more laid back and friendly atmosphere. The charming town of Kenwood had it all for us and the Kenwood Cottage with its canyon setting and lovely sounds from the year round creek really sold us.

Not familiar with Kenwood? Look what the Wine Spectator wrote in a recent edition about the area, 'There are beautiful wine roads all over the world, rambling through Tuscany and Provence, or along the Rhine in Germany's Rheingau. But you needn't cross the ocean to find some. The route, coming into Kenwood as you drive north through Sonoma Valley, the mountains ribbed with hillside vineyards, is in the same league.”

This is why we so fell in love with the area and why this is such a great place to relax and unwind.

Experience the much more laid back atmosphere of Sonoma vs Napa valley where it is not uncommon to have the wine maker pouring his own wines, the staff more friendly and passionate than we have found in other regions and often where there is no tasting fee (we keep free and discounted tasting coupons at the cottage to help also!)

What makes this house unique

Nearly all the other properties listed above and below this one on VRBO do not have the quiet, canyon setting with a creek running through the property and the ambiance that creates for our guests. Don’t be misled - other properties are often in residential neighborhoods and are not a serene, relaxing environment. Yet the location of the Kenwood Cottage is so ideal: only a mile from over 25 excellent wineries, yet romantic and secluded. It was everything we had hoped for after looking for a second home for over 5 years.

We use the cottage when it is not rented and thus, have it fully equipped the way we enjoy it and make all of these ammenities available to our guests.

We provide a complete guest guide that tells you not only everything you need to know about the cottage, but also all the great wineries, restaurants, and things to do around the cottage. We also provide numerous two for one or free tasting coupons for wine tasting.

Walking on the seldom traveled road is a favorite in the morning hours. Coffee on the secluded rear deck overlooking the creek (or while in the hot tub) is a morning favorite. We often head to a local store (we provide many ideas in our guest guide) to pick up picnic supplies (we keep a picnic cooler for you at the cottage) and then head out for wine tasting picnicing. The exciting part for us is that every year, the wines change! So we often revisit the local wineries several times per year to enjoy their new offerings. Once back from wine tasting/exploring/hiking, we relax in our front yard garden with some wine and cheese and then either enjoy one of the many great restaurants within minutes of the cottage or prepare a feast with our fully equipped kitchen. We finish the evening sitting in the hot tub looking up at the millions of stars (it is amazing what a slight elevation change from the valley floor will do to make millions more stars appear!). Tell me, what is there not to LOVE about this destination!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Great Get Away

  • 5 of 5

We've been to Napa and Sonoma several times and this had to be the most relaxing stay we've had thanks to Kenwood Cottage.

We had a great stay at the Kenwood Cottage and highly recommend it if you're looking for a comfortable and quiet space to unwind for a few days. The home is thoughtfully appointed for guests who want to move right in and not have to worry about a thing. The kitchen is nicely stocked with the basics (including spices, and coffee!) and the bathroom and bedrooms are comfortable and well-kept.

It's clear that the owners care for the property from the moment you enter the gated driveway and see the beautifully manicured lawn and gardens. The back deck and patio lead to the Adobe Canyon Creek and we enjoyed mornings and evenings listening to the stream and the beautiful flowers and natural surroundings.

The house is also conveniently located. It's a short drive or bike to the opening of the park and you can enjoy several hikes around the Bald Mountain area. The owners also provide a set of recommendations for dining and shopping in the area so that you can can act like a local. We used several of their recommendations to good results. The nearby wineries that they recommended had nice tasting rooms (and good wine!) and everything from grocery to gas to dining options was a short drive away.

Highly recommend.

Perfect Sonoma Cottage!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for a wonderful stay at the perfect sonoma cottage! The cottage is secluded, peaceful, and quiet but is very close to some amazing wineries and restaurants. The cottage itself is beautiful, immaculate, and updated. The beds are all comfortable, the couch is perfect for cuddling up for a movie or chatting next to the fire with friends, and the kitchen is open and easy to navigate. The grounds are gorgeous with a blooming and spacious private front yard, large deck looking over a running creek, and hot tub. The house is very well thought out and cared for; it has all those things that add up to an amazing stay, including... Personal recommendations for nearby food and wine, coffee, fluffy pillows and soft quality cotton sheets, and all the utensils and appliances you would need. Immediately this was a place I wanted to return to, it is spacious but warm, personal, and cozy. I came for a girls relaxing weekend, but imagine this would also be a great place for couples, or small families. I would without a doubt recommend staying here, and hope to return myself in the near future!

Nice property, low privacy.

  • 3 of 5

Upon arriving at Kenwood Cottage, you're met with a quaint cottage with gated entry to the driveway. The grounds were in outstanding condition and well manicured. Heed warning to the guidance that you're given prior to arrival, and back your vehicle into the driveway....the property is located on a bend in the road with limited visibility to oncoming traffic.

The location of the property was fantastic...just a 10 minute ride into town, or the various wineries. There is also a small grocery store close buy, which was very convenient.

The house itself was very nice...the pictures to an adequate job in displaying what you'll find upon check in. We found the house to be a of a bit cluttered decor, and the bathroom area, specifically the tub and sink, needed some attention, but it served our needs. While not present for check in (which wasn't a problem) the owners were generous enough to leave a bottle of wine for us to kick of our stay in wine country. Thank you!

The back yard of the property is the hidden gem. There is a quiet creek that runs behind the property, as well as a large deck, overlooking the creek. There was also a grill and hot tub...unfortunately, we didn't have time to utilize either.

With all of the the above, the property is an obvious 4/5 star rating., and a great value There were a couple of unexpected features that we felt had a negative influence on the appeal of the property.

1: There are instructional notes throughout the interior of the home. These notes, pasted onto the walls, included items such as "remove shoes prior to entering bedrooms", and " if you are a couple, please only select one bedroom to use for your stay", or reminders to lock certain doors throughout the house. While none of these requests was outlandish, the notes always left a feeling that big brother was watching you.

2. Speaking of big brother, we also found it uncomfortable to have cameras on us while we were staying at the property. I understand California law to allow for a reasonable expectation of privacy while residing in a rental property. We felt that the cameras were absolutely an infringement on that right, and also felt like we were being watched at all time....similar to the TV show Big Brother.

The property itself, while a bit dated, was amazing, and just what we were looking for. The uncomfortable feeling that we were not alone in the property would steer me away from being able to recommend this property.

Owner's Response: The Kenwood Cottage is our vacation home when not rented. So we are constantly upgrading and improving the property. Early 2016, we completed an extensive remodel of the kitchen and bathroom to keep it modern and helpful to our guests. I'm sure many of the comments this guest made would now not exist due to this upgrade. (Pictures coming). We have numerous compliments from past guests as to our "notes" or signs in the cottage to explain everything on how to use the thermostat to what could be a complicated television/cable remote. When you only stay two nights somewhere different, guests have said this can make for a more relaxing experience. For those that don't need that assistance, they can just ignore the signs. As our vacation home isn't always rented, and although we do have good neighbors that keep an eye on it for us when not occupied, we do have a camera focused on the creek in the rear of the property to monitor the water level. Further we also have one camera on the driveway that can tell us when someone arrives on property. It serves that purpose only. We feel these are both prudent to owning a vacation property away from where we normally live. This guest was upset because he misled us with the contract he had with us. He claimed only two people would be at the cottage and in fact 5 were there. At the time of his rental, we charged extra when over two people were there and so he attempted to circumvent this additional fee. This became an issue as he checked out. So his comments need to be considered with that as a backdrop.

Favorite New Place to Stay in Wine Country?

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed in quite a few VRBO and other private lodgings over the years. I do believe we have a new favorite. The house was spotless. The kitchen stocked with plenty to use for eating at home. Bring your own food - Safeway is quite close - but spices are plentiful. Gas grill needed tank replaced (under stairs) first attempt to use. Beds and chairs and couches all comfy. Loved the back deck and area to sit by the creek. Tons of instructions for how things work. Thanks for the welcome bottle of Kenwood red. I did not see a wine key strangely enough, but we always travel with one. A quick run up the road from 12. Watch for deer. Just be careful with the driveway - on a curve - back in when coming home if you can.

Thank you for a great stay at such a pretty cottage, with all the amenities you could wish for. Kenwood is in a perfect location to visit the surrounding area, but is also perfect to relax in without going anywhere.

Notes:
Over 20 World Class Wineries are less than one mile away. See our google map below with a number of wineries listed to give you a sampling. And note how close -- and far you are from them: they are less than one mile away but when you are done tasting, you return to a canyon setting, non-residential type neighborhood. Compare and contrast that with the other properties listed on VRBO in the wine country that have close neighbors and no feeling of 'getting away from it all.' We also provide at the cottage a complete guest guide that details restaurants, stores, coffee shops, and many outdoor activities to consider. In addition, we put together a document called 'Kenwood - the Perfect Day?' that details where to pick up picnic supplies, where to have a picnic, what wineries to see, etc to take all of the guess work out of what to do while here in case you don't want to just relax in the gorgeous setting. We do all the work for you! We also have a number of discounted or 2 for 1 coupons.
