About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 7-8)

This house is like stepping inside a Currier and Ives print or a Beatrice Potter illustration of simple, country good cheer. It is a few minutes' drive to two ski slopes and provides a snug place to relax whatever your day entails. It has a wonderful layout and is deceptively large inside. It's cozy enough for one person or a couple but also spacious enough to easily hold a family.

First floor has dining room, step-down living room, small hideaway room and den. Wood-burning fire place.

Second floor offers a wing for the master bedroom with its own bathroom. The main upstairs hall connects two bedrooms and large bathroom. This design means two couples can have relative privacy; adults and kids can enjoy some distance. Two of the bedrooms are furnished with queen bed (so 2 queens in the house). One bedroom has twins. A downstairs room off the TV den has single bed. One of the couches is suitable for an overnight guest.

The house was renovated two years ago to update the bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchen. New kitchen appliances, wi-fi. Washer/dryer in basement. Screened porch in back of house for skis with pass-through window from kitchen for summer. Dogs are fine but sorry, no cats since many people are allergic. Parking in back, along white fence.

Part of the charm of the house is the way it catches light through the antique windows. Some built-in cabinetry, uneven floors and surprising nooks and crannies add to the delight. Kitchen is well equipped and there is ample linen. It's nicely located in the heart of historic *South Egremont, in a row of similar white clapboard houses. House is bright and sunny in winter; leafy and relaxing in summer. Have a nap, take a bike ride, grab a book, wind down, slip out of time.

Rivers, lakes, tennis courts within minutes in a car. Hiking options all around. 5 minute drive to Catamount Ski Slope, 15 minutes to Butternut Ski Slope. Walk a few minutes to Old Mill restaurant, post office, country store, liquor shop, Kenver ski outfitter, public golf course and free library. Lots of antique shops and auctions and tag sales. Five-minute drive to Great Barrington with art-house movies, nightlife, gourmet and organic food stores and Saturday morning farmers' market. Minutes from Tanglewood, Berkshire School, Bash Bish Falls, and Shakespeare & Co. 30 minutes to Pittsfield theaters or Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. Just over two hours from New York City and Boston.

House is located in village of South Egremont. The listing says Great Barrington because that works better with navigation devices.

About Corinna Barnard

I've owned the house for three years with a family member but I've known and loved it my whole life since it belonged to my grandmother, and after her, my parents. I live and work in New York and come up often, but a team of three local people run the place on behalf of guests. I hike with my dog in the woods, gather with family and friends, go to the local Triplex movies in Great Barrington, check out local historical sites, garden, read, think, bike, play tennis and cross-country ski.

Corinna Barnard purchased this house in 2008

Why Corinna Barnard chose Berkshires

I bought this house because it was in my family and I love getting away to the country from New York. The night air in the Berkshires, the heavenly hills, the beauty of walking, driving, biking around. The Berkshires are a rarity in that they offer the relaxation of a beautiful natural setting with plenty of cultural offerings. I'm still discovering things here, the variety of places to hike and swim is extensive as well as the array of historical sites and theaters, concerts.

What makes this house unique

It's a rarity to sit in an early American house in a casual comfortable way, but this house provides that. Here you can sample the heart of an authentic, old, New England village, from the inside, looking out.

Charming historic home!

  • 5 of 5

The rental was exactly as described and reviewed. The home is large with lots of unique spaces. It was convenient, well-stocked, and clean, and the beds were very comfortable (bathrooms were great too). We most especially loved having fires in the evenings (wood provided by Corinna). The location was great. We enjoyed the local shops in the village (a great outfitters and resale shop, across the street from each other) and of course all that Great Barrington has to offer! We were very happy to enjoy the breakfast items that Corinna supplied for our first morning too! I would recommend the property for large families or family get togethers since there are so many spaces to spread out. Corinna was very professional, responsive, and accommodating throughout the entire process of inquiry through check-out.

Great old house perfect for our needs!

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking to stay near Great Barrington with a large family group plus a pooch, this property is wonderful. It's comfortable and offers plenty of room for a large crowd. Great dining room. They thought of everything to make our stay a pleasure. Much New England warmth, character and charm.

Great house in a great location!

  • 5 of 5

This house is in a great location. There are many board games to play. The beds were very comfortable. The view from the back porch makes disconnecting from reality a breeze. The house was stocked with many necessities that makes traveling much lighter. The owners are very friendly and were great. Even stopped by to empty out trash for us. I would highly recommend this house for anyone staying in the area!

A very comfortable stay

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at this property for five nights with my two sons (19 and 21) and my friend and her son (16). The house was ideal for us with three bedrooms, one of them with three beds for the boys. The beds were all very comfortable and having two bathrooms was great.

Downstairs was really spacious with lots of comfy sofas for relaxing, books to read and games to play - although we spent a lot of time in the evenings watching the olympics! It was incredibly hot during our stay but the A/C and fan downstairs worked well (and the A/C in the bedrooms). The kitchen is small but had everything we needed. We barbecued outside most evenings.

This really felt like staying in a family home rather than a rental. It's a beautiful old house with antique furniture which feels lived in (i.e. you can relax without worrying that you're going to damage something pristine).

Corinna and her partner both called round to check we had everything we needed. They were very friendly and helpful and gave us some good suggestions for things to do in the area - the beach in Great Barrington, hiking Monument Mountain and a visit to the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge. Everything is a 15-30 minute drive away. We could have done more but it was very hot, the house and garden were very inviting - and, did I mention, there were olympics to watch (and as Brits we got very excited about Team GB's success!).

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this as a place to stay. Thank you Corinna for providing us with the perfect restful interlude between our Boston and New York City stays.

Cozy house perfect for a retreat

  • 5 of 5

This is a very comfortable and roomy old New England house that will make you feel at home. It's great for children, as there is room to roam outside and a wonderful screened-in porch. The house is well situated near the Taconic and a short drive from downtown Great Barrington, with its many shops and restaurants. It's also a short drive to beautiful Lake Mansfield and to many hiking trails. We enjoyed eating the breakfast the owner provides in the charming dining room. The owner is very responsive and helpful.

Perfect weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

The house was great, everything a small group of college buddies needed. The beds were comfortable and the yard was amazing. Dining room table is excellent for a card game. Right around the corner from the golf course. Perfect, great time.
