About Pam MacKenzie

I have been living in Key West since 1992 having moved here from Nova Scotia, Canada. I have been doing vacation rentals since 2004 and my three properties keep me plenty busy. My properties are strictly rentals and they are not a second home. I operate as a business using my Florida Corporation called Scotia, Inc. and the rentals are my primary source of income. All three properties are licensed as transient rentals with both with the City of Key West and with the State of Florida.

You can also find me and my business on Facebook as Key West Breeze Vacations.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Hi Pam. I trust you found everything in order after we left on the 4th. I want to thank you again for our cute little rental - it has a lot of classy & well thought out details that many other units just do not have. We had a blast in K.W. & will definitely contact you again should we get another chance to holiday there. Take care,

Wendy

PERFECT PLACE!!

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I rented this place from Jun 23 to June 27 to go to our friends wedding and would most definitely rent it again. The place was clean, had everything we needed, perfect location and comfortable for two people. The shower was a nice size which is always a concern when renting a smaller room. The location was walking distance to everything we needed, just a few steps from relaxation or to the crazy streets for fun. The owner Pam was so thorough with instructions and provided so much information on the area and the room - THANK YOU Pam!

fun trip, ok accomodations

  • 4 of 5

While there was nothing misrepresented, we were still a little disappointed with the Simonton Studio. First, the positives: Comfy bed. Nice bathroom. It's always nice to have a full sized refrigerator, etc., and while we didn't eat a meal at the condo it would work to do so. The adjustable coffee table is nice and having the chest of drawers was helpful. Pam does her best to inform her renters- from the materials in the condo to the communication, she even offered advice on finding deals on the island. The location is good, in a quiet spot in old town (unless the rooster visits.) Now the unfortunate negatives: the front porch is small and shared with another condo. The bikes were old and hard to ride- the chain on my husband's bike fell off twice, the second time resulting in a deep bruise on his knee. The ants were present. As Pam stated in the past there are baits and we are used to these ants because we live in Florida but it's still annoying. This was our first time staying in KW in accommodations other than a hotel or B and B which we'll likely return to next time. Not having housekeeping service (re-using the same washcloth for 3 days! Yikes!) meant taking out our garbage, etc. and felt a bit like roughing it. We also missed having a pool more than we thought we would.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the feedback. Renting a vacation rental is not for everyone and in Key West they are very popular as a more economical accommodation, budget hotel rooms in Key West typically cost around $300 per night and many accommodations add on additional fees for cleaning, parking and the use of resort facilities. I add only tax to my high season rate of $220/ night. The bikes are not new; pretty, new bikes are a target for theft, but I encourage guests to report maintenance issues to me as soon as possible and when I received a text from this guest (that was not intended for me) and it was mentioned that the chain had fallen off the bike but had been replaced, I immediately responded by texting that if the problem persisted I would pick up the bike for repairs. I did not hear about the second incident until this review but both bikes have since received professional servicing and the chain issue has been fixed. I include in my welcome letter, which is kept in the condo, the offer of fresh towels or linens to be delivered if they are desired and I have often fulfilled this request. The insects are annoying but our sub-tropical climate presents seasonal conditions that creates challenges to home owners and I try my best to battle them successfully. The ants are attracted to moisture and food and sometimes I cannot control those conditions. I do have the condo treated monthly by Orkin and if I am advised there is a problem Orkin will respond immediately by spraying both inside and outside. I hope I have addressed any concerns resulting from this review. Pam

Amazing location & Everything we needed!

  • 5 of 5

The studio was a PERFECT place for my best friend and I to spend a few nights in on our first ever visit to Key West. The location doesn't get any better, just a block off of Duval st, a couple doors down from a karaoke bar, and so close to so many cute restaurants and such. We LOVED the bikes that came with the condo and used them frequently. The condo itself was clean, well-stocked with linens, kitchenware, etc, and had lots of helpful brochures and info for visitors. Honestly, we did not spend too much time in the condo because we had so many fun things to do! Would definitely return to this property and recommend it to anyone visiting the Keys.

Great location and clean apartment--would stay here again!

  • 4 of 5

This was our first visit to Key West and we will definitely be back! The Simonton Studio is the perfect location--one block from Duval Street and within walking distance to almost anything in Old Town. The rental includes two bikes, which was very convenient because biking is certainly the quickest and easiest way to get around. The studio is small but a good size for two people. It has everything you need and was very clean. The kitchen is fully stocked, it has an updated bathroom with large shower, comfortable king size bed, and working A/C. Although the rental is located on a semi-busy street, the area was very quiet. Yes, there are roosters around and you might hear them in the morning, but that didn't bother us at all. It just adds to the experience! We loved having the natural food store across the street--they have fresh smoothies and juices that are delicious! CVS is right around the corner, too. Parking was a little tough but we were able to find a spot within a half mile from the rental every time, so it was doable. there are plenty of options if you're willing to look!

One thing we were disappointed about is that there was no mention of an ant problem prior to booking. After we put our deposit down and received additional information on the property, we learned that the owners spray for "bugs" on a monthly basis. I understand that it is an island and there might be bugs, but we didn't realize that it has an actual ant infestation problem. There were instructions in the unit on what to do if there are ants and they conveniently include spray and ant killing materials, yet this would have been good information to have ahead of time. The ants were mostly confined to the bathroom, but there were a lot of them. Spraying, cleaning, and setting out ant traps is not something I would have signed up for on vacation. We would definitely stay here again as long as the ant infestation was under control.

Great Location!

  • 4 of 5

This was our first time in Key West and this little studio was a great location for exploring Old Town Key West, Higgs Beach, Fort Zachary Taylor and Duvall St. The studio was small but so efficient, very well stocked with dishes, toaster, blender, everything you needed. And we loved the "dining" table. That was awesome! Comfortable king size bed. The first day there we walked and walked....the next day we gave the bikes a go....so much fun and we covered so much area!!! Loved the bikes. And also tried some of the neighborhood restaurants suggested; the Cuban one was great! Great place to stay!

1st in key west

  • 5 of 5

This was my husband and my first time in key west and also my first time using vacation rentals.com. The experience was great. The location of the studio was perfect. We were able to walk everywhere. Although bikes were available we preferred to walk. There were some loud neighbors beside us but I guess that is expected for the key west atmosphere.

Notes:
Key West is a town filled with Victorian architecture; it has a history filled with pirates, salvaging and the wealth that those trades once brought. It has been a refuge for writers, Presidents, parrotheads(Jimmy Buffet fans), artists and tourists looking to find a different Florida experience. Key West is funky, eccentric, expressive, tolerant and fun loving. The nearest beach is South Beach, 6 blocks form the condo. Fort Zachary Taylor State Park has the local's favorite beach and is about 1 mile from the condo. For a beautiful pool try Dante's of Key West, a fabulous restaurant located at 955 Caroline Street in the Conch Harbor Marina on the corner Grinnell Street. They offer a wide selection of food, from their fresh seafood, caught by local fishermen to sandwiches that anyone will enjoy. The pool is for patrons of Dante's to enjoy; go in and have some food and drinks, while you are there take a swim in the afternoon to beat the Florida heat.
