About Kelly Romich

I fell in love with this cabin at the top of the mountain. Once my son started playing basketball and pursuing a college scholarship, there wasn't much time to relax in Blue Ridge and I started renting the cabin. Now others can enjoy it as much as I do!

Kelly Romich purchased this lodge in 2009

What makes this lodge unique

Raccoon Ridge is centrally, if not 'perfectly' located. The Toccoa River flows past the bottom of the Ridge. Sandy Bottom adventure center area (kayak, canoes and tubing) is a mile east on Aska Road. You can rent or put air in the tubes, load up the truck, drop folks off upsteam at the National Forest canoe launch and pick them up an hour and one-half later at Shallowford Bridge. For the really good fishing, drive east to the far end of the County to Cooper's Creek, also part of the National Forest. Two miles to the west are the Aska National Forest Hiking / Mountain Biking trails. There is a marked trail leading to this area through back country from Raccoon Ridge. Head east to the end of Aska road, turn right and you come to Noontoola Creek Farm which has one of the finest sport clay shooting facilites you'll find. Thirty minutes northeast you can enjoy whitewater rafting on the Ocoee river. Two hours north is Clingman's dome (the second highest peak in the Blue Ridge Mountains). There is a new local public golf course, Old Toccoa Farm, you can spend an afternoon in Blue Ridge or just 'chill' on the deck overlooking the valley.

Beautiful home with amazing views!

  • 5 of 5

This home was really beautiful! We had a large party, 8 adults and 7 kids, and there was plenty of room for everyone. Both the bedrooms upstairs had private baths, as well as the master bedroom, so that was a huge plus. Kitchen completely stocked with every utensil and more to make cooking for a large group possible. The beds were incredible, and the king in the master was literally dream worthy. So comfortable, with beautiful french doors at the foot of the bed that we left open to feel the breeze. Incredibly peaceful. Lots of extra blankets and pillows throughout the house to accommodate a large party. The owner Kelly was quick to respond to any emails, and even took the time to email me just before we came to let me know that she had just found out there were a few broken chairs around the fire pit. I appreciated that because otherwise we would not have known to bring camping chairs! That was helpful!! (there are still several adirondack chairs on the property that are not broken, the nice wooden kind. I believe there were 4 of those. Plus 4 rocking chairs on the deck) The house is on the top of a hill, secluded and quiet. Hot tub and pool table were a big hit with the kids in our group.

A few things that didn't really affect our stay, but do be aware of.... Be careful on the stairs to the basement, they are beautiful but very steep and a few of them are quite short (see other reviews) Also, be aware that you will have to deal with your own trash as there is not a place outside to put it since it attracts the wild life. Overall a wonderful vacation for our big group!!! I definitely recommend this house!

Nice but not luxury

  • 3 of 5

The cabin is in a great location. Nice wooded and remote feeling lot with good parking. It's easily accessible and quick to reach from the interstate. Getting the key wasn't too bad but once inside it was disappointing to have a cabin of this size not cooled. It took most of the evening for the AC to get the temperature of the cabin to something mid 70s. The hot tub was took until nighttime to get hot enough and had a heavy chlorine smell. These aren't huge issues but don't align with 'Luxury'.

The cabin inside was very spacious. The living room was small/limited seating but the dining table was a nice plus, being oversized with lots of seating. The decor was nice. I appreciated the lack of usual cabin rental kitsch/clutter. This one had room for groceries, bags, phones, etc. The bedding was also nice and everyone appreciated having a proper bed to sleep in (no sleeper sofas)! The stairs are slices of trees with the 'bark' end of the tree. It makes for them to look nice but going down is a risk (We had a few falls, slides, & scraped heels). Descending the stairs sideways proved to be the best option but should be reviewed if your party has elderly or young guests. The cabin also had plenty of lights but the kitchen/dining lights put out a LOT of heat (which didn't help an already hot cabin). Even after the cabin was cooled the pot lights heated things up uncomfortably so we stuck mainly to lamps. Unfortunately, many of them had either burnt out bulbs, or broken/missing knobs to turn them on (again, not luxury).

The cabin tech was sub-par. Wi-Fi was weak/spotty (we had IT/techy folks in our group). We saw no outdoor speakers as advertised. Both surround systems were poor. Neither had Bluetooth connectivity or connections for newer than an iPhone 4. With the weak wi-fi they there fairly useless. Additional speakers in the cabin were all for older phone models. We resorted to portable speakers we brought. The kitchen equipment was well stocked but many items were in rough shape (ALL of the knives were as dull as spoons, drip-stop coffee maker didn't, etc). The pool table was nice but the sticks were all in pretty bad shape so we didn't play much for fear of damaging the felt. The game room TV was big (living room one was OLD) but without the surround working properly it was useless.

Overall, we had fun but things could have been better given the price. It's nice but not luxury. The owner said she is addressing things so maybe we'll try again!

Owner's Response: I go to my cabin to get away from it all! The cabin is not that techy--there is one wi-fi provider for the area and the TVs upstairs are old (the 400 lb kind). The TVs in the basement and upstairs bedroom are smart TVs. The Welcome Letter that I send out informs renters that the hot tub takes 4 hours to heat to 100, as well as the fact that the stairs are uneven and steep. As for the chlorine smell--I would prefer that to dirty water! Light bulbs do burn out--but there are extra light bulbs in the laundry room and there is a knife sharpener in the kitchen drawer. Frankie told me that he didn't happen to look in those areas. I have changed out the light bulbs to LEDs--to be honest I hate it because the light-even though the box says "sunlight"-is still too unnatural for me. I don't think that my cabin is for Frankie--but it is perfect for those looking for a nice getaway on the top of a mountain in a nice gated community!

Fantastic Family Gathering

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the cabin for our family reunion. There was room for everyone to sleep comfortably. The beds were dream worthy. We all loved the gorgeous decor. I spent some time on the upper deck reading, catching a few moments alone during a busy weekend - loved that there was space for people to do that. I also loved the large dining table that was long enough and deep enough to have the family meal. The kitchen was well stocked for meal making. The drive up the hill was a bit intimidating/thrilling the first time, but the view is totally worth it and none of us had any trouble with it, even in the rain. I'm already trying to figure out when we can go back! Thanks for sharing your lovely cabin with us Kelly!

Perfect house for family & friends

  • 5 of 5

Great house! I have rented at other houses in the area and I was not happy with the beds. These bedrooms were perfect and comfortable. The set up of all the rooms were perfect. Plenty of room for all of our family. The view was beautiful and more than enough outdoor space to enjoy. The kitchen was well stocked with cooking utensils and pans. We had a great time and will be back to rent this great house. Beautifully furnished. The house is located in a great and safe neighborhood. We were at the very top of the mountain so we had great view. Thanks for sharing this home.

THIS CABIN IS STUNNING!!!

  • 5 of 5

Everything about this cabin is perfect! It was very clean, nice linens, well stocked kitchen, nice hot tub, beautifully decorated, lots of room for parking and tons of room for sleeping. The view is from the very top of the mountain and still convenient to rafting and downtown Blue Ridge. Our entire group raved about this cabin. This was our first time in Blue Ridge but we have rented many cabins in Gatlinburg with larger groups and this was by far the nicest we have seen. Kelly was very responsive and great to work with. We even saw two black bears in the front yard. Thank you for allowing us to use your beautiful home. We will definitely be back!

Wish I could give this house 5 stars

  • 1 of 5

My family rented this property for the week for our vacation. We all traveled very far to get here and we were looking forward to a nice and relaxing week! The house was beautiful and very comfortable but there was a lot of broken, non-functioning, poorly maintained aspects of the house that made the daily living with so many people extremely difficult. The one bed was broken and when the owner was alerted she sounded as if she knew about it and it was no big deal but didn't offer to send anyone out to fix it but is now trying to charge us for the bed that was broken when we got there. The oven never heated over 200 degrees, the satellite TV was out the entire week, the grill didn't work, the decks were infested with termites and carpenter bees and extremely dirty, the landscaping was a complete mess and obviously was never touched and had over grown weeds everywhere, breakers were off all throughout the house, the only bathroom on the main floor (not in a bedroom) didn't work and there was things like cords, tools, hoses, etc laying ALL over the outside property. The house is gorgeous and we had a great time but it's a shame that the maintenance was so poorly kept. We own multiple rental properties and would never have left a negative review if not for the poor communication and handling of the broken bed situation. It is a shame that such a great vacation left such a sour taste in our mouth. We love Blue Ridge and definitely will return but probably not at this house.

Owner's Response: I was only notified of all these issues after the renters checked and were notified that they would charged for the repair of the broken bed. It is never an easy conversation to inform a renter that they will be charged for damage. I was in France when the renters emailed me to tell me about the broken bed (which included a picture). I told them that I was very sorry, did not know the bed was broken and would see if I could have it fixed. He responded that "it was no big deal for us--we made it work". I did not hear from the renters again until their departure. There was no mention of a single problem about the cabin until I notified them that they would be charged for the broken bed. I sent the picture to the prior renters and my housekeeper and confirmed that the bed was not broken prior to their stay (the railing was broken and the mattress was lying on the floor). I then received a scathing email with a long list of issues (most of them noted in the review) and accusations. I called Dish and was able to obtain a credit for the TV not working and I provided the credit to the renters. As to the landscaping, the renters were correct. I found out while I was in France that my landscaper had moved and had not been to the property. Given the 4th of July holiday, I found someone to come and "weed whack", but the landscaping was not in good repair. The carpenter bees have been awful this year and my pest control company is currently treating the carpenter bee issue, but it is a 4 treatment process (I am on treatment 2). Arrow also checks for termites and I am sure that the decks are not infested with termites. As to the breakers and electricity--the cabin often loses electricity (no underground cables on the mountain). When strong storms go through the breakers can get tripped. This is very easy to remedy. As to the toilet, I had a plumber go out, but he could not find an issue with it. As to stuff lying all over the property, I can only imagine they are referring to an abandoned irrigation system and outdoor lighting wiring. I take pride in my cabin and work with renters to address any issues. I don't enjoy notifying renters of damage. I talk with people prior to renting and rarely have damage. I wish I had been informed of these issues-- it is hard to fix problems that you don't know about.
