We fell in love with Prince Edward Island on our honeymoon in 1996, returned in 2001, and haven't missed a year since. PEI reminds us of how Martha's Vineyard used to be. When we bought Cape Tryon House in 2004, we wanted to preserve the island character of the house while completely updating, renovating, and adding extensive living space. We love the people of PEI; down-to-earth, hard-working, and very talented. We are both choral singers, and love the music, theatre, and visual arts of PEI. We have a large extended family, and we love to share our home on PEI with them.
Thomas Upson purchased this house in 2004
There are many attractions nearby, such as beaches, amusement parks, historic sites, art galleries, restaurants, and shopping; but the house is in a peaceful area on the north shore, overlooking farm fields and the Gulf of St Lawrence.
We love the walks to nearby lighthouses (Cape Tryon and New London Lights). We also enjoy gardening in our well-established private garden (thanks to the previous owner). Our friends love having a golf course across the road. The kids love flying kites in our field, and our beagle loves walking the property with us. We have spotted whales in the Gulf from our deck, and often see bald eagles flying overhead.
My partner and I decided to marry this August and to bring our respective families together for the first time. To extend this family time together we selected Cape Tryon House as our base for this family "union" for the two weeks following the wedding. We could not have chosen a better place for our needs for our five adult children, their spouses and our grandchildren. We found the house exceptionally well equipped with everything we would need from cooking and glassware and condiments for large group meals to several common spaces for visiting and playing games and relaxing. All situated on at least three acres of well maintained grounds where we enjoyed croquet, kite flying, and general running around during the day and "smores" and more by the fire pit in the evening. There was even satellite TV for the sports minded among us to follow the Rio Olympics. We had no issues at all but Dwight, the manager had introduced himself to us our first evening to make sure we knew we could contact him with any problems.
The views from the decks on two levels, the easy access to the Yankee Hill beach and others, the toys and bicycles supplied all made our time at Cape Tyron very relaxing and enjoyable.
Our children all live in western Canada and some had never been to PEI before. All of them left with fond memories and a true appreciation for the quiet and peaceful ways of this beautiful island and their stay at Cape Tryon House.
We have finally arrived home after 8 weeks away. However, the highlight of our trip was staying at Cape Tryon House. Our family had a fabulous time as the house had everything and more than we needed. Our great nieces, nephews and grandson had so much fun running around on the grass in front of the house and playing with the play box equipment. Meanwhile our nieces, nephews and children had a wonderful time catching up with each other around the fire pit and deck at night. We very much appreciated the master bedroom as a place for us to retreat, just every now and then.
You have certainly thought of everything which was appreciated by all. Your manager also gave us a very thorough orientation to the house and surrounding areas.
We did spend time at Cousins Shore which was beautiful, thank you for the recommendation.
Our family kept saying all week that the house was just perfect and we agree.
Thank you so much for opening your home to us.
We would like to thank the owners of this dear Cape Tryon House for donating a week to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation as a fundraiser with sincere and deep gratitude.
This home welcomed us into its great spacious rooms filled with warmth and comfort upon our arrival. There is no hotel room in the world that can replace the hospitality that we found here.
PEI has a terrific history and so much of it is represented through out the house.
There is beautiful artwork, carvings, mosaics, and trinkets everywhere. The furniture and rugs, lighting and wall colors all played together to make coming 'home' after a long day of fun a treat.
Our grandchildren loved the bedrooms on the third floor. The rooms were created with a lot of love and forethought, which was not lost on the kids. We adults enjoyed sitting below stairs to listen to their giggles and play.
We found that the kids enjoyed a fire in the fireplace in the mornings and so we all gathered there for breakfast and to plan the days adventures. We returned there at the end of the day to enjoy the extensive selection of books and music that we found tucked here and there in little corners.
Green grass and the ocean beyond is not only a fantastic view but a fabulous place for the kids and pup to burn off extra energy. A few kites, and a bat and ball did the trick!
We have already started to plan our next trip to this excellent place that is Prince Edward Island and to our new friend, The Cape Tryon House.
We stayed for one week at this beautiful home. This is a large home, with expansive views of rolling farmland and an unobstructed, view of the ocean. The home is very well maintained, comfortable and tastefully furnished. We enjoyed the local beaches (warm water), bike rides, great seafood and just relaxing in the perfect weather during our stay. The location is quiet and very private, although the the wireless internet also allowed us to stay connected. The landscape of PEI is spectacular and there is plenty to explore.
A week here in July was delightful, happily accommodating the 8 of us, in the form of 4 couples. The setting is nice, with a good outside space even while being right on a low traffic country road. The shore is not readily accessible from the property but you can reach it with some adventuresome hiking.
The house itself is quite nice with a large private master suite while the other bedrooms are on the upper 2 floors. Bathroom facilities are good with an en suite in the master. The outside shower was great. The kitchen is very good and the second sink comes in handy.
The home allows for comfortable quiet space and one living area can handle a group.
I can easily recommend this rental.
This is a splendid retreat in a peaceful setting with an expansive view of the St. Lawrence Gulf. We walked to 2 lighthouses, played lawn games, and on a rainy day still had space for group activities (in addition to the family rooms there are two dining rooms) or found our own nooks for reading or naps. You are in the middle of the north shore with privacy but conveniently located for day tripping. We loved the experimental wind farm at North Cape, which is so today, as well as learning about confederation and early island life at museums in Charlottetown and easterly. No restaurant on our excursions stands out as much as the delight and conviviality we enjoyed back "home" fostered by the family throw downs involving everyone in turn sooner or later, the best usually having to do with the great seafood available locally. Pick your group and go; there's something for everyone, even a 30-amp. hook-up for that peripatetic cousin with an RV!
