|Minimum Stay||5 - 7 nights|
Da Blue House is an awesome little traditional West Indian cottage that offers great value for money as an idyllic taste of Caribbean life for someone on a budget. Surrounded by a fenced-in yard, the cottage is child and pet friendly and the ocean is just a few steps away...
The master bedroom has a king-size bed and the second bedroom has a trundle bed which pulls out to become 2 twin beds. A futon in the living room offers bedding for an additional 5th guest (child only). Both bedrooms have efficient, quiet wall-mount AC units and the living room has a 32' flatscreen TV and DVD player. The one bathroom has a shower and there is an additional shower outside for rinsing off after the beach. The kitchen is equipped with a 4 burner propane stove and a large refrigerator. Adjacent to the kitchen is the dining room, although most people like to eat on the covered side porch which has seating for 6 at a picnic table and bench. There is also a charcoal grill.
The ocean is just across the street from the front yard. There is seating on the front porch as well as large comfortable garden furniture so you can sit and watch the surf, the sunset and the people walking by...or take a nap on the hammock in the shade of the palm trees!
And then of course there's the surf...'off the wall' is in front of the house, also in Carrot Bay is Donkey Spot and School House. Apple Bay and the Bomba Shack are a 10-15 minute walk, Cane Garden Bay is a 10 minute drive.
Carrot Bay really is the loveliest neighborhood in Tortola with friendly people stopping to chat and welcome. The awesome Da Cola Pot restaurants is moving to new premises in Carrot Bay soon and we have The North Shore Shell Museum for a very eclectic setting and offering the best local dishes like rot is, shrimp, fresh fish and fantastic mango, banana and coconut pancakes. There is also the more upscale Sugar Mill for a special night out or their more relaxed beachfront restaurant for lunch (5 minute walk). Bananakeet has the best sunset views and cocktails as well as a great menu and is a 5 minute drive.
There is a telephone for local calls and incoming overseas call and we also have wifi. Just ask to borrow a selection of games and sand toys for kids.
Having lived in Da Blue House for several years we can most definitely recommend it - the views are beautiful, the neighbours are friendly and the surf is closeby (across the street sometimes). We only moved because 2 kids, a big dog and 30 + surfboards is a little more than we started out with!
It's a great deal and it's the real deal if you want to really experience island living! Tortola is awesome for active people looking for some aquatic adventure as well as people looking for just a quiet place with some sun, great scenery and a warm pristine ocean. We love to surf, kite-board, skate board, paddle board and motor boat. It's really safe here and we are constantly told how unspoiled and relaxed it is compared to other Caribbean islands.
We used to have cows wander across our front lawn until we had a puppy and kids and put up a fence....there is still the odd goat, chicken or cow that passes! Da Blue House made us feel part of a community and you never tire of falling asleep to the sound of the ocean outside tor window. Try it out!
After making the decision to pay the scandalously high holiday-week airfares, we were looking to economize on accommodations. Da Blue House was a great fit for our needs. The cottage is modest, but has all the basic needs covered, including air conditioners in the two bedrooms. We loved that it was in a real neighborhood, not a tourist ghetto. We spent time reading and relaxing on the front porch and in the hammock, with gorgeous sea views just across the road (seawall, not beach). It was a great base for exploring the north shore beaches, and handy to restaurants with stunning views.
Best of all was the service provided by Sam, Sharlene, and JC. From our first correspondence on, our questions and concerns were addressed by email and then in person on Tortola. We have rented holiday homes many times, and never have we had friendlier, more helpful service!
My family of four (including two young teenagers) stayed in 'Da Blue House' for a week in July. We really enjoyed our stay. The cottage had everything that we needed and is just as shown in the photos. The location is also perfect. There are multiple excellent beaches within a short drive (Brewers Bay, Smugglers Cove, Long Bay, Cane Garden Bay, and more). We snorkeled for hours at Brewers Bay and Smugglers Cove. Be sure to eat at Gene's Bar and Grill early in your stay (just a short walk to the east...next to Ke Villas). If we had, we might have eaten there multiple times.
Sam and Sharlene were really helpful throughout the rental process and especially when our arrival was delayed due to mechanical issues with our flight. They were quick to resolve a minor issue and checked in with us to see how we were doing. Be sure to let them arrange your car rental through Dedes...our car rental was waiting for us at the ferry...it was almost too easy.
Be aware that the air-conditioning is only in the two bedrooms, that you need to use bottled water for cooking and drinking, and that cars zipping by on the roads outside can be a little loud at times. It was pretty hot outside during our stay...but the cottage was never too hot inside. We did sometimes hang out in the air-conditioned bedrooms during the day though (when we were not at the beach or exploring).
We definitely recommend 'Da Blue House' and would stay there again.
From the planning to arrival and the stay as a whole I was in Heaven! Sam is so very helpful in suggestions for groceries as well as car rental and other information. You will be in good hands following her lead! She is accessible and friendly and while I didn't need to contact her other than for one question, she was very responsive!
The cottage is just as depicted in the photos. Bright, clean, comfortable and perfectly situated. I was traveling by myself but the cottage would comfortably hold perhaps three-four adults (depending on how comfortable everyone is with each other). I like space so I would probably limit it to one or two other adults. If you have kids, it's great because the yard is fenced.
I do recommend renting a vehicle to explore all that Tortola has to offer. Driving on the left side of the road (for North American tourists) really isn't that big of a deal. You'll get used to it quickly. Pack a little cooler and throw your beach and snorkel gear in the car and GO! And, then when you return home, make a little snack and sit in the front yard or at the cute little dining table outside the kitchen. Perfect. Each morning I made a little egg white omelette, fruit and coffee to get my day going.
Da Blue House is a short drive to some of the most beautiful beaches Tortola has to offer. The closest beach is also walking distance and if you are going for the Full Moon Party that is also walkable--although perhaps a little longer walk than some might enjoy.
Most importantly, if you like your own space, Da Blue House is PERFECT!
Going back in early 2016. Already booked!
My husband and I along with our two boys spent a week in "Da Blue House" We have been to the Virgin Islands several times and decided to rent a house. This was perfect. The house is very close to Cane Garden Bay which we found to be wonderful. The house has all the amenities that you will need. The owners and managers were wonderful, making sure our vacation was perfect. It was a wonderful getaway and if we travel back to Tortola we will rent this house again.
My family of 6 (kids 9,5,3,1) recently stayed at the Blue House in August 2015. We had a great time. The house is super cute, fully fenced which was great for the kids, has a beautiful view of the ocean, St. Thomas, and Jost Van Dyke). Sam and Sharlene were great to work with us and help coordinate our arrival. The owner of the home (who lives in the house behind the Blue House) was an absolute sweetheart. She came out and introduced herself, and every morning brought us mangos from the nearby mango tree. The house itself had all the things we needed as advertised. The outdoor dining and BBQ area was perfect. They gave us a pre-paid cell phone which came in handy!! Everything about our stay was great! Our trip was 4 weeks long and included 1 week in Puerto Rico, 1 week in St. Thomas, 1 week in St. John, and our last week in Tortola at Da Blue House. Of all the places we traveled, Tortola was our favorite and Da Blue House was our favorite house!! All the beaches nearby are great, Smugglers Cove, Cane Garden Bay and Brewers Bay were our favorites and all so beautiful and calm. All are a short drive from Da Blue House so a car is a must but the drive is amazingly gorgeous! We were there during Carnival which was fun and entertaining! If were were to come back to Tortola, we'd definitely contact Sam and Sharlene to schedule Da Blue House again!
Our family of 4, including two children (ages 3 and 1) absolutely loved "Da' Blue House"! From booking through departure, J.C. and Sam were incredibly helpful, guiding us through the entire process, from ferry scheduling, to car rental, to provisioning and beyond. We found the home to be quite nice, just as described on this page. It's in a great location, convenient to many beaches, and offers a real "local feel" from a rental perspective.
The home itself is a cute, little cottage, offering everything one could need. From the air conditioned bedrooms, to the well stocked kitchen, to the outdoor eating area, and the fenced large front yard complete with palm-shaded hammock, you simply couldn't ask for more, particularly for the price! Plus, anything extra you may need, like a pack-n-play or high chair, J.C. and Sam are ready and willing to help!
The "Da' Blue House" is in a great location in Carrot Bay; it sits just across the street from the water, offering spectacular views toward Jost Van Dyke and the setting sun. While the area across the street doesn't have beach access, due to rocks, there are several in close proximity. Just over the hill to the west, about a 1-minute drive away is Little Apple Bay, and about 2 minutes past it you'll find Long Bay. Another 10 minutes and you can explore Smugglers Cove; one of our girls' favorites! To the east of "Da' Blue House," you'll find Cane Garden Bay, about 8 minutes drive, and Brewer's Bay about 15 minutes drive. Keep in mind, it's not that these beaches are all that far, it's just the roads to them include numerous switchback turns as they lead you up one hillside and down another. The drive to the beaches is half the fun! If you're up for surfing, which we were, it's worth the 30 minute drive to Josiah's Bay on the northeastern coast of Tortola, which offers relatively consistent wave action, in a safe, sandy-bottom environment. Needless to say, there are plenty of beaches from which to choose!
Ultimately, if looking for a great getaway in a tropical paradise that allows you to truly experience the local culture, "Da' Blue House" is a sure thing. We'll definitely be going back!
