About Nikki Spencer

PapaLani has been my labor of love since 2003... i am so grateful to steward this land. I have been doing all kinds of body work since 1995 so have a large variety of offerings if you would like. i have been interested in all aspects of health & wellness & will be happy to share with you.

Nikki Spencer purchased this farmhouse in 2003

Why Nikki Spencer chose Papa

I purchased this farm because i am interested in creating a sustainable life & peaceful country living. I love to know where my food is coming from and be involved in the process. I like being away from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the cycles of the moon. The farm is spacious and private and offers endless opportunities.

What makes this farmhouse unique

I enjoy the fruit trees, gardening, herbs, vermiculture, raising chickens, making mulch/compost, creating a beautiful and safe environment for people to explore themselves and their connection with nature.

Lovely stay in the Green Room at Papalani Farm

  • 5 of 5

The property is incredibly beautiful! There are SO MANY different plants, even beyond the fruit trees and macadamia nut orchard and Avocados... The Gardens are fascinating (several different types!) and well-kept by Nikki (and her farm-hands, when they are here.) And the dog that follows her around is the sweetest and quietest in all the land! The little fruit stand by the road here is kept stocked of Organic avocados and whatever else is in season that's been harvested, which local travelers love to stop for. I stayed in the Green Room, which was comfortable and quaint, and gave me plenty of room. Its furnished, so plenty of storage space for clothes and bags. I had access to the bathroom as well, which is simple, and kept clean. And a GREAT outdoor shower was available too! What's better than a refreshing shower under the open sky and over sweet little lava stones and colorful pebbles! For a smaller budget, this is a sweet little spot!! It's about 30 minutes to town for an incredible Farmers Market, food, yoga/meditation, and more! Lots of accessible and beautiful beaches nearby the property as well, with great snorkeling opportunity. Even a black sand beach. Mornings can be chilly in the winter, so I'm glad i had a couple layers, but the coqui frogs sang me to sleep each night, and the hot sun kept me going by day! Mahalo for the room and kindness, Nikki!

Beautiful and BlissFULL!!!

  • 5 of 5

Papalani is a home away from home in a tropical paradise! Each time I experience Papalani Organic Farm it gets better and better!!! Nikki is constantly upgrading her farm with new garden designs, updating her eco cottages and tending to her landscaping. I feel the 'Aloha' dancing and drenched on her property, feeling it in each morsel of her delicious organic papaya and avocado. It is a very close drive to one of the most beautiful beaches on the Big Island and Nikki is a gracious, loving, happy, considerate and accommodating host. Thank you for the best time of my life! Aloha, Mahalo nui loa. I'll be back! :)

The only part of our trip we didn't enjoy

  • 2 of 5

Fact: roaches in kitchen drawers. It's Hawaii, so not unexpected. Only saw 1 in the bathtub. Keep food in fridge.

Fact: Nikki asks guests to discard scraps in her compost bins.

Opinion: composting is environmentally responsible; not always convenient on vacation.

Opinion: Beds/pillows are the most comfortable we've ever had in a rental.

Fact: You will hear highway noise at all hours of day/night . 1st night I thought cars were driving to the property.

Opinion: Highway noise is only minimized by the ridiculously LOUD coqui frogs that screamed from dark to dusk. Not exaggerating. Take white noise if you intend to sleep.

Fact: When I braved the outdoor shower, a stranger walked up from the highway and began talking to me. Uh, ya. Really creepy.

Fact: We left the outdoor light on once, knowing we were returning after dark. When we returned, Nikki had turned the light off, which as far as we could tell is only accessible from inside the house. That was weird too.

Fact/Opinion: The way to the house is a quaint, uneven stone path through her herbal garden. If you can't leave a light on, be prepared with a flashlight.

Fact: Nikki provided us 2 bath towels, 1 each, for a 5 night stay. If you like to have a dry or fresh towel after a couple of uses, take your own.

Fact: There are 3 exterior entrances to the house: Kitchen, living room sliding door and bedroom. The sliding door locks do not work. It took us several days to discover the wood dowels behind the bookcase, and until the highway guy showed up, we didn't care. The exterior bedroom door is only a privacy lock that could be opened with a butter knife. Nikki said she never felt unsafe here, but we did. She told us we were crazy.

Fact: As noted in description, water is not potable. Typical for that area. Nikki provides county water for drinking.

Opinion: we found the county water difficult to use. It's a spigot with a small bowl on the floor to catch excess. Not possible to wash fruit or brush your teeth that way. We ended up buying bottled water at Costco, which for environmental reasons dislike doing. We recommend taking re-usable water bottles. We often felt washing our hands just made them more contaminated.

Fact: Shower temp randomly vacillates from normal to scalding to ice. We both have master degrees and couldn't figure out how to not holy *#(!) dance. Opinion: painful!

Fact: Critter noises in wall between blue bdrm & living room.

Opinion: Hr to Kona. Location good for so- out of spa

Owner's Response: oh my goodness... i really don't even want to respond to this review as it is so off. i feel terrible about this negative energy ever being at Papalani Farm... i ask that you please read the other reviews to get other opinions... all i would like to say is that these guests told me upon exiting that if i didn't give them their full money back they were going to write a terrible review and sue me. i did not give them their money back and you can see what happened. i think this may be how they attempt travel around the world for free....

Wonderful!

I love this place! We loved walking around the property and each time we did we discovered new delights. The beauty and the abundance is intertwined in the best way. Papayas, bananas, macadamia nuts, avocadoes and much more are everywhere. Very comfortable too. Spacious. The kitchen is well supplied with everything a cook needs. And we enjoyed grilling out on the lanai. I highly recommend coming here to renew your sense of connection with the natural world.

an ideal blend between rural farm tranquility and tourist activities on beaches/excursions/volcanoes

  • 5 of 5

The main farmhouse at Papalani Farms could not have been a better place for my spouse and I to spend the first week of our Big Island holiday tour with some close friends. Nikki was there to answer every question, put us in touch with local inexpensive tour guides, and direct us to the best beaches and hiking trails. When resting back on the farm, we were supplied daily with the best of avocados, mangos, passion fruit, bananas, lemons and squash one has ever tasted.

Our days began in fresh morning mountain air with a cup of coffee or tea and quiet contemplation on the lanai, overlooking the marvellous Hawaiian landscape. After relaxing sightseeing activities during the day, we were supplied at night with magnificent star gazing around an outdoor fire, with some local music even thrown in to complete the atmosphere. I have never had a more relaxing holiday experience, and the fascinating locals and fellow farm guests were a big reason why.

If generic tourist hotels far removed from meaningful interaction with locals are not your cup of tea, then this place is probably for you. We completed our vacation with a few days at Hilo and then the northern part of the island, providing a diversity of activities and climate regions that are simply not available on the other Hawaiian islands.
