This charming and spacious garden hale is situated on the sunny side of the Paniolo Town of Waimea (Kamuela)

Our peaceful, two acre retreat is the perfect location for exploring the numerous points of interest on the Big Island and a private getaway to relax and experience 'Hawaiian Time'. We are minutes from HPA and Parker schools.

It features beautiful bamboo and stone floors, 9 feet ceilings with fans, and a private lanai with an organic garden and outdoor seating and grilling. The separate bedroom features a comfortable queen size bed with upscale linens. The punee (Hawaii Lounge) in the living room is a true queen size bed for comfortable extra space sleeping or relaxing. The bathroom is beautifully appointed with a walk-in natural stone shower. Free parking is provided.

You will find yourself minutes away from the best beaches on the Big Island. The largest of Hawaii Island’s white sand beaches, Hapuna Beach, has consistently been rated on numerous international Top Ten lists. Mauna Kea Beach, a perfect crescent of golden sand leading to calm water, has been voted among the Top 10 beaches in the U.S. Both offer great conditions for swimming, sunbathing, body boarding and snorkeling.

Beyond the beaches, Hawaii offers a host of outdoor activities and sightseeing opportunities. Head to Waimea and visit the many shops and galleries.

Waimea Town is the perfect starting point for a trip to the Volcano National Park. A memorable drive to Hilo along the Hamakua Coast offers breathtaking views of historic Waipio Valley. This area is also home to Akaka Falls, one of Hawaii's most famous. You'll see deep water-carved gulches and valleys, thick with tropical foliage. Stop and tour gardens full of exotic plants and orchids.

For adventure of a higher nature, the 13,700 foot summit of Mauna Kea provides dramatic scenery and an unforgettable visitor experience. The W. M. Keck Observatory provides a visitor’s gallery with exhibits describing astronomy research and star gazing.

There's no better way to experience the amazing cultural diversity of Hawaii Island than to visit one of the farmers’ markets that take place all around the island. Wonderful stay

My husband and I stayed for a week in October. The hale is beautiful, clean, quiet and cool at night. The kitchen is well equiped, which we appreciated because we ate in most of the time. The lanai is private and we enjoyed having our meals there. Matthew, the owner, made us feel at home and even brought us tangerines from his garden.

The location was perfect for us, as it allowed us to easily get to the sites in the north of the Big island: Mauna Kea, the valleys, the north Kohala region, and the beaches. Since it is slightly out of town, on the west side, it is a quick 15-minute drive to the wonderful beaches of the west coast. In Waimea, we found convenient grocery stores and a market.

Overall, I fully recommend and would love to stay there again.

Nice central location for visiting Mauna Kea

This is not what I expected. The pictures on the site are somewhat misleading. This is called a cottage and really is a converted garage. The exterior garage doors are the first thing you notice when you drive in. Inside the flooring for the main room is painted concrete. There is a large bookcase that covers the garage door bordered with curtains that mask the hard wear.

The kitchen has a toaster oven, a countertop 2 burner induction cooktop, a microwave and a refrigerator. The bathroom is all stone and very attractive. I expected a nice hot shower.....the hot water was enough for one shower then would turn cold. Be sure you bring your own soap for showering. The site does say no bath soap under the bath heading, under general they say basic soaps.

The furniture and decor were attractive. The raised bamboo flooring in the bedroom was beautiful. Lots of books were in the bookcase. The TV was dated and the number of channels to watch was miniscule. The cottage has a certain charm but my expectations were a cottage and not a converted garage. The owner lives on the property, he greeted us upon arrival, anxious to get a signature and give us keys. It would have been nice if he showed us where the washer/dryer were and how to use it. When I discovered no shower soap I knocked on his door, he opened the door I told him there was no soap and he replied we don't provide shower soap cause everyone has their own preference. I explained we were not prepared to provide our own shower soap. He later left a his own body wash on the stoop. That was appreciated.

In conclusion the cottage was clean, the bed linens comfy. I would not recommend to a relative or a friend.

Owner's Response: Wow!! I am very surprised to see this review. Out of seventeen previous Garden Hale reviews, fifteen are 5 Star and two are 4 star. Leslie, First and foremost the photos and description of Garden Hale are ABSOLUTELY accurate! Secondly you are most welcome that we could grant your request for a last minute reservation of only 2 nights instead of our policy of a 3 night minimum as well as an early check in. I will always try to accommodate a special request. The Garden Hale was originally an art studio. That is why it has 9 foot ceilings, acid stained floors a skylight and Venetian plaster walls in the bathroom. The oversize door made it easier to move in large pieces of art, etc. We provide hand soap in the bathroom and kitchen, dish soap in the kitchen and laundry detergent in the laundry room. We no longer offer bath soap or shampoo as most of our guests prefer to use their favorites but I was very happy to provide some for you. Garden Hale is in a perfect central location close to the best Kohala Coast beaches, three miles from Waimea Town and an easy drive to explore all the sites of Hawaii Island. The first thing you see when you drive onto the property is the lush vegetation the covers our two acres. The Garden Hale is a beautiful, private and quiet retreat that offers all the amenities needed for a short visit or an extended stay. Inside and outside we strive to reflect our love of Hawaii and this property by offering a serene and comfortable space that we love to share with our guests. Again, all I can say is please read the reviews from previous guests of Garden Hale. I promise you will not be disappointed with your decision to be our guest. Mahalo, Matthew and Rose

Lovely, spacious vacation place

The place was very spacious, clean, and wonderful for hanging out. We also loved the back enclosed porch. The birds seemed to be having a party back there. We would gladly stay here again. Thank you Matthew!

Perfect location

Garden Hale was perfectly situated- close to the beaches and the Center of town for shopping needs. Very quiet, clean and private. Matt was very attentive and the eggs were a nice welcome! The cottage had everything we needed for our 4 day stay. We hope to come back , again!

Our best decision

We could not have made a better choice. Not only is the pricing VERY reasonable for the area, but location is everything on the Big Island. We happily returned to the Garden Hale each afternoon knowing the sun would be shining on us.

Our accommodations were perfect for two, with everything neat, clean, and in good working order. We particularly liked having access to beach chairs, snorkels, etc. It made our daily trips to the beach more comfortable. The Hale setting was very quiet even though other guests were on the property. Having laundry facilities was also a bonus for our week long stay. Of course, no review would be complete without mention of the fresh eggs and papaya left in our kitchen for our use!

While we managed to visit most of the major sites on the island, the area around Waimea gave us the most enjoyment. From multiple beaches (snorkeling with mantas just down the road was a highlight) to a variety of golf courses, fine dining (Merriman's in Waimea) to local farmers markets for home cooking, native history to the Parker cowboy legacy, and, of course the gorgeous views all add up to having it all within a 25 mile radius.

We hope to be able to enjoy many return visits to the Garden Hale in the future and would not hesitate to recommend it to others. Mahalo!

The best for our needs

Garden Hale was a highlight of our trip. Definitely the best of all our accommodation in Hawaii. The house was quiet, clean, very well equipped and comfortable. If you are seeking for privacy, this is a place for you. We were welcomed by fresh eggs and coffee, which was very nice too. Sorry, we couldn’t meet the owners personally, we would be interested in permaculture and their travelling experience. I’d like to say “next time” but Hawaii is so far away…Thank you.

Waimea, also called Kamuela, is the largest town in the interior of the Big Island, and is the center for ranching activities and paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy). This historic area full of rolling, green pastures is still home to cattle, cowboys and ranches. The Parker Ranch in and around Waimea is the largest privately owned cattle ranch in the US, and the annual Fourth of July rodeo is a major event.

But there is more to Waimea than just paniolo. This area is now home to a thriving community. You’ll find one of Hawaii Island’s finest chefs at Merriman’s Restaurant. Peter Merriman is three-time finalist in the prestigious James Beard Awards for Best Chef and is one of the founding members of Hawaii Regional Cuisine. You can also find the Kahilu Theatre here, a 490-seat cultural mecca on Hawaii Island featuring performances by renowned musicians, dancers and artists.

The Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival, held annually in the first week of February, has recently become another major event of the town. In the center of town you can find Hawaiian art at the Isaacs Art Center and the Wishard Gallery.

Waimea is also home to the headquarters of two astronomical observatories located on Mauna Kea, the W. M. Keck Observatory and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. It is also headquarters of the International Lunar Observatory Association

To explore the road less traveled, the Kohala Mountain Road (Highway 250) leads north from Waimea to the charming town of Hawi. Most visitors miss this beautiful drive, but it’s a scenic way to get from Waimea to Hawi and the stunning Pololu Valley Lookout, which showcases breathtaking coastal views of the Hamakua Coast.
