Overview

Virginia Cabin Rental Photos and Description

1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, built for 2 adults, but can sleep 3.

If you are looking for a place to relax while surrounded with the sights and sounds of nature, stay in Fireflies. The cabin is located along the New River waterfront across from the 57-mile New River Trail State Park. The cabin rests 200 feet from the water not far from a bend in the river. You can watch the sun come up over the mountain and the mist rise above the river while sitting on one of Fireflies’ two porches. The New River is 350 million years old and retains the pristine beauty of an unspoiled waterway. Enjoy canoeing, tubing, kayaking, hiking, biking, horseback riding, or fishing from our floating dock. If you would like dining and entertainment options, Fireflies sits midway between Wytheville and Christainsburg with both cities just 35 minutes away. Located within 45 minutes of 3 wineries.

Why the Owner Chose Barren Springs: : We are originally from New Jersey. While vacationing in the New River Valley in 2004 we fell in love with the area. We purchased property on the river in 2005. As this was our second home we rented it as a vacation rental for 3 years before our retirement. In 2009 we moved into our home and began to build a small cabin on the property close to the river. The cabin, which we call Fireflies, is now ready to be enjoyed by vacationers looking for a place to relax.

The Unique Benefits of this Cabin: : Year Purchased: 2010 - The cabin sits just above the riverbank and has large windows and two porches that have been designed to enable you to enjoy the abundance of nature. It is common place to see the deer in the early morning and again in the evening. Water birds of many varieties fly up and down the river each day and it is not unusual to see a bald eagle.

Owner Description/Comments:: This property is owned by Bill and Kathie Conaway both of whom are retired. Bill and his father spent the last year building the cabin.

About Kathie Conaway

We retired to the New River Valley in 2008 having lived in the southern portion of New Jersey. Kathie was an elementary school principal and Bill ran a small contracting business.

Kathie Conaway purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Kathie Conaway chose Virginia

Bill and his father built the cabin in 2009. The cabin was designed and furnished with our future guests in mind. Our aim has always been to make our guests' stay relaxing. We make every effort to make Fireflies Cabin your home away from home.

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin has been designed and located on the property in such a way that you feel like you are far 'away from it all' while being only 5 miles from Interstate 81 and 800 feet off of route 100 (Wysor Highway). Our very own floating dock sits on the river in front of the cabin. It is great for fishing and swimming.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for the gorgeous accommodations! We had a lovely stay here during our daughter's graduation and only regret that we never found this little piece of heaven before! The word "cabin" is truly unfair to your beautiful little home! We will definitely be back! PS. the pumpkin muffins were awesome!

A warm, welcoming home away from home.

This property is by far the best that I have stayed in through Homeaway. Everything about it so far exceeded our expectations. From the extremely, well-stocked kitchen to the unbelievable bathroom with whirlpool. Added to this is the spectacular scenery, the river, the wildlife and the quiet peace. Bill built this house with impeccable attention to detail and Kathie and Bill have maintained it beautifully. The porch on back is a great place to relax. We will visit again soon and hope to make it an annual trip!

Great, peaceful mini-vacation!!

  • 5 of 5

This is a rare place to experience total peace & quiet -- we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! This was our second visit to Fireflies and everything there is just about perfect! It is spotlessly clean and the owners have obviously put a lot of thought and care into making this the perfect getaway. We enjoyed the muffins and eggs the owners left for us, and all the care put into every item in the cabin. We love the porches for great R&R spots, and just sitting on the dock watching the occasional canoe or raft float by. The magazines and movies in the cabin are well chosen, as are the furnishings and decor (even the little soaps in the bathroom!) Everything has that special touch that show the owners care about their guests. Took a trip to Cascades Falls and enjoyed the hike. We'll be back -- loved it! Thanks for a great vacation.

Fantastic!

We had a great time! The cabin and land were beautiful and peaceful. And just as the name suggests, there were tons of fireflies to enjoy as we sat on the porch at night. We will definitely be back in the future.

Relaxing...Beautiful...Homey

  • 5 of 5

I rarely post reviews, but feel this exceptional property should be highlighted. This was our second visit to Fireflies, so we could meet family and bicycle the New River Rail Trail. The bicycles we rented at the Draper Merchantile were finely tuned and responsive, which made riding a pleasure on this most beautiful rail tail.

Once again we arrived to find a fully stocked kitchen, the cabin was impeccable, the bed and furniture were very comfortable and the entire cabin was beautifully decorated. Communication with the owner was very good and it is very obvious that they take great pride in their property, with exceptional care to the maintenance of cabin and grounds. The cabin is located below the owner’s home in a beautiful location above the river and it feels like you have the whole valley to yourself. P.S. The pumpkin muffins and fresh eggs were delicious and there were fireflies galore in late May, what fun!
