We are 25 year residents of Durango Colorado. Our kids have been born and raised here and do not remember a time before they were skiing and enjoying the summers at Durango Mountain Resort - or Purgatory, as the locals still refer to the place. In short, we would not consider living anywhere else. We love to share this special place with our friends and guests. Please come and spend some time here in this special corner of the world.
Mark purchased this condo in 2008
We bought what we consider to be the best unit in Purgatory Lodge because we intend to spend the rest of our lives here and think this property represents all the best attributes of Purgatory at DMR.
The unit overlooks both the plaza and the bottom of the main lift. You can watch your family ski from the living room window. All amenities are just an elevator ride away.
Lovely setting, large corner unit with views, cozy fireplace, and a small veranda with a grill
where we barbecued steaks. The mountain view where breakfast is served on floor 1 is stunning.
The children enjoyed making waffles. We also had family fun in the large jacuzzi and heated pool with a slide.
Mark, the owner, went out of his way to be helpful and responsive. We are looking forward to going back.
This is our 3rd year our two families of 4 have stayed at Mark's home-away-from-home at Purgatory Lodge. This condo has everything you need and want. There is so much room here, the 4 adults and 4 pre-teen and teenage boys have plenty of space to spread out and never feel cramped. The kids sleep in the bunk beds so the 4th room is used as an extra space for toys, luggage or piling on the fold out bed and watching a movie (which rarely happens because there's so much to do!). The kitchen is stocked with all the staples and more. We cooked all our dinners and enjoyed gathering around the 8 seat table for dinner then games.
There's is no need for AC in the unit as all the windows open and cool the condo down to the point it gets chilly- even in July!
There's plenty to do at the condo- zipline, alpine slide, ropes course, hiking, renting bikes (you can take your bike on the ski lift and have a fun yet challenging ride down), swimming, hot tub, game room (w/ a pool table, foosball, Xbox and Wii) and across the street you can now rent paddleboards and paddleboats. We always enjoy off-roading in a rented jeep to drive up high in the mountains and get our feet in snow and taking a rafting trip down the Animas.
You will not go wrong renting this condo. Mark is very responsive and, as a local, can help you should you need recommendations.
We stayed at the Purgatory Resort in Durango and totally loved it! The place was very clean, had nice furniture, and all the amenities of your own home. If you just want to stay close by the lodge their are many fun activities and shopping for all ages. We definitely will return!!!
This is the second year in a row our two families have spent a wonderful week in this warmly welcoming space. I really cannot imagine more ideally arranged accommodations. Both sets of parents had a spacious bedroom with en suite bath, and the middle bedroom --with two sets of bunk beds and a bath --was perfect for the four cousins. The balcony is a great place to catch a cool breeze and see the kids trying out the trampoline, climbing wall, alpine slide, zip line, and other activities in the plaza below (purchase passes after arrival) while you grill dinner. The dining table seats 8 comfortably, and is a great place for game night when you're done eating. Or you can move to the comfy couch and arm chairs around the fire for a game of charades. In addition to the immaculate grill outdoors, the kitchen is well-equipped (coffee maker and toaster are to be expected, but it even has a blender and a crockpot!), and the pre-stocked staples may save you a trip down the mountain for basics if you forget something when you stop in Durango. The condo is decorated very nicely and makes it easy to feel at home --pillows and afghans on the couch, footstools by the chairs all say "come in and relax." The location is lovely, with hiking /biking trails just outside your door, a lawn for tossing a ball, and some fun shops on the plaza. The kids have also been fans of the rec room, enjoying foosball, pool, and (sigh) video games together. This year, a bug bite sent us to the Urgent Care at the entrance to the resort, which we found to be fast, friendly, and genuinely caring. Purgatory is perfectly located between Durango (white water rafting! jeep rentals! restaurants and brew pubs!) and the fun in the mountains (Rapp Corrals is great for horseback riding, Trimble Spa massages are amazing, Silverton and nearby Mayflower Mill and Old 100 Mine are worth a visit, and backroad jeep adventures lead to breathtaking views and haunting ghost towns). And you don't have to worry if you get wet or grubby, because the condo has a washer/dryer! Two parking stalls make it easier for families to meet here. The owner is lovely to work with -- genuinely kind person and quick on responses. We're already planning to come back for a third year -- so I mean it when I say that this is a wonderful location with a lot to offer families looking for a comfortable base to spend time in with lots of options for adventures all around. All eight of us are counting the days till next summer's visit!
We stayed at this home during February. It was out first trip with our kids and all of our grandkids, three of which had never skied. It was perfect.
We had two minor issues and the owner was there within the hour to address them. It was a perfect location and the accommodations were great for our family. We will definitely try to book this unit every time we can.
We had an absolutely wonderful time staying at this rental. It was extremely spacious and clean. We had a total of 9 people. Five kids plus my parents. The extra master bedroom was great for my parents, giving them their own space. There were tons of summer activities for the kids outside in the courtyard. We could watch them from the balcony. Zip lining, trampolines, bounce houses, obstacle course, alpine slide, and the ski lift were just a few activities that our family did. These are all an additional cost through the condo complex. I would highly recommend this rental. The game room area was also a nice addition for the kids to go to in the evenings. They got a new foosball table while we were there and are also going to get a new pool table. The swimming pool was getting a facelift, so we were unable to use it this trip, however the hot tub was very nice. We also got two parking spaces in the garage which was convenient.
The kids are already asking if we can go back next year!
This condo (exactly like the pictures!) was an excellent accommodation for our two families of four: the four cousins loved having the bunk-beds to share, and having a bathroom attached to that room meant that they didn't have to navigate an unfamiliar environment in the dark. Each set of parents had a luxurious bedroom and private bath as well, so we were all together, but not on top of each other. The kitchen with bar seating and an open plan into the dining/living room areas meant the family bonding didn't stop when cooking or cleaning had to get done (the kitchen could use a few more utensils, dish towels, and things like mixing bowls, but the pantry was generously stocked, which was a plus). The dining room table sat all eight of us comfortably, and was the ideal location for an epic domino game after dinner. The bar seating at the kitchen made a great place for the kids to have breakfast while the parents packed a picnic lunch. Having a washer and dryer in the condo meant we could pack lighter as well. In general, the property was very clean and well-maintained. The balcony overlooked the fun on the plaza, and we could let the kids go down and check out the games while still keeping an eye on them from above - perfect! The zip line, alpine slide, and other activities were fun for the whole family, too. And having multiple hikes or mountain bike trails available just outside the door was terrific (though of course there are other locations to check out like Silverton - the mine tour is well worth taking!, Durango, etc). The pool/hot tub and game room were also huge hits with the kids, and meant that even "lazy" days were fun. The grassy area outside was great for family frisbee games, and the pizza place served up fantastic pies. We've taken four family vacations together in VRBO properties, and this is the first one to which we've planned to return -- a perfect location, comfortable and attractively decorated without feeling too "breakable," spacious, and all around just a wonderful spot for families to share. (The other reviewers' suggestions about hitting the groceries in Durango are spot on, and I have to throw in a plug for Outlaw Rafting if you're looking for a whitewater adventure - they have an excellent safety record and family friendly tours, plus super friendly guides! We also had a wonderful time at the Mesa Verde cliff dwellings -- there are three different tours to chose from, so everyone can match their own activity level.)
Located along Colorado's famous 'Million-Dollar Highway'. Some of the above activities, such as racquetball, museums, live theatre, movie theatres, and health spas are located in Durango, which is 25 minutes away and also close to Mesa Verde National Park.
