About Owner/Manager

Joy and Larry Kleefeld: Owning a piece of paradise in Hawaii has been a lifelong dream of ours and we are very happy to share our vacation home with you on your next Hawaiian vacation. We have 6 children, and 5 grandchildren. Joy is involved with patient care at a local hospital. Larry is a chiropractor, looking at retirement on July 15, 2016. We are hoping to spend a good part of the year in Kona after retirement. We enjoy spending time with each other, family and friends, and our avid cyclists and snow sport enthusiasts.

We chose Kailua-Kona with its unique weather, dry climate, beaches and recreation including scuba diving, snorkeling, boogie boarding and surfing. It is well known for the Iron Man Triathlon.

"The Kona Seaflower has everything you need to enjoy the BIG Island. The unit had wonderful views in the distance of the ocean from the balcony. The condo was within walking distance to the Kona Brewery, Downtown Kona, and a short drive to some incredible beaches. Our favorite benefit of the condo was the snorkel equipment, boogie boards, and plenty of towels for beach use. We went snorkeling every morning at a local beach with sea turtles, tropical fish and amazing coral reefs. It was clean on arrival and private. We went out most nights but the kitchen is full size with everything you need to cook meals. The loft upstairs did get a little warm in the summer for our taste but there are fans provided in the unit. The Wifi worked without difficulty. Overall our experience was incredible and we hope to stay here for future vacations. it is a true home away from home. Thanks Larry and Joy for sharing this gem!!!."

Good location, but property needs some upgrading...which I understanding is going to happen.

The property is located about 2 blocks (walking distance) to the King Kamehameha resort, which has a nice sandy cove beach. The Hapuna Beach shown in the pictures I saw advertising this property is over 30 miles away, up the highway.

We found, as others have already noted in other reviews of this property, that the upstairs loft bedroom is unusable in summer weather. Others have stated that's because hot air rises...well, that's only part of the problem. The problem is that there is no insulation between the asphalt shingles on the roof (which is exposed to the intense tropical sun) and the upstairs ceiling so the heat from the sun makes the upstairs bedroom an oven set on 'broil'. Turning on the upstairs ceiling fan just exacerbates the problem. Without the fan the hot air next to the ceiling stays up there. With the ceiling fan on that hot air is disbursed and heats up the entire condo, especially the upstairs room. Other than those few days during the stay when we had either a late rain or an exceptionally cool and overcast day, we simply could not use the upstairs bedroom. It was just too hot to sleep. I have had extensive emails with the owner about this and he said he already had plans to add insulation. Also, the downstairs pull out sofa was worn out. If I were to return, I'd first ask if those had been corrected before booking.

Another problem, which is really a criticism of VRBO and _all_ owners who advertise on VBRO (not just this one), is the characterization of their properties based upon how many people it "sleeps." All the owners just count up the number of beds, of any size and including rollaways and pull-outs, and multiply by 2, and then say that's how many the unit "sleeps". While that _might_ be ok for 1 night in a motel, for a vacation rental I want to know how many people the unit _accommodates_! Here, yeah, there's 2 beds and a pull out, so yeah, that's 3 "beds" and yeah 3 x 2=6, but there really isn't enough space for more than 4 people to sit down and eat a meal together, for example. VRBO should have owners identify the size and type of each bed instead of just saying "sleeps x." Also, all owners should be asked to give a estimate of the number the unit can reasonably _accommodate_ (i.e., not just for sleeping) to give a better idea of what's being offered & to aid comparisons with other offerings.

Just what I needed

Excellent stay overall. Very clear directions and everything in order on arrival. Very well equipped kitchen and living space. Importantly the property is within a 5 minute walk of the nearest restaurants and nightlife and and a 15 minute walk will get you anywhere in Kailua-Kona you might want to see in the evening. National grocery stores just round the corner for stocking for a longer stay.

Kailua Bay Resort

We had a family reunion in Kona in June. We rented 3 condo's in the Kailua Bay Resort. This location and resort worked out well for us.

The pool and BBQ area was a perfect place for us all to get together. The caretaker was very helpful in showing the area and how to use the grills.

The condo was well furnished, clean and fit our needs perfectly. The condo was furnished with ocean equipment, chairs, boards, etc. It was such a money saving items to have at your use.

I would recommend this resort and condo for your vacation stay in Kona-Kailua, Hawaii.

Loved Kona Sunflower

We loved the Kona Seaflower. Had everything we needed for our vacation. Excellent location and can walk to many locations and a drive away from a lot of adventure!

Very comfortable condo with great views from lanai which was very nice for morning coffee and evening cocktails. The condo has everything you need from blender to boogie boards!

Loft area was great for our teenage daughter! It was warm at first, but got the fans going and it was fine.

We had a great time and would stay here again!! Thumbs up from us!!!

Great Location in Kona

My wife and I stayed 4 weeks in this apartment in January- February 2016. There is a town beach behind the Courtyard King Kamehameha hotel that is only a 15 minute walk from the apartment. Also 15 minutes away is a large grocery store and in the other direction a craft and vegetable market. The town beach is small and crowded so it is best to have a rental car and travel north to some of the other Kona beaches. The apartment is on the top floor of a three story building. The apartment consists of first floor bedroom, bath, living room, kitchen and a large terrace with a four place eating table and a view of the ocean. There are steps leading to a large loft bedroom with bathroom.

The loft bedroom looks inviting with its large closet, makeup table and an expansive view out of a full length upper window. Inviting as it looks, it is somewhat impractical because the A framed loft ceiling traps the heat and there is no efficient way of cooling this area. There is a ceiling fan directly above the bed, but I found that the room is hotter with the fan on because it is pulls the hot air above it down on you. The loft needs somehow to have its own air conditioning unit. It helps to close up the apartment at night and run the living room unit, but as cold air tends not to rise, it takes a long time before it reaches the loft bedroom. I do emphasize this problem for any group intending to use the loft. If there is only one couple they can be comfortable in the lower bedroom with its own window air conditioner. It seems like a waste however, not to be able use the loft bedroom.

The main living area of the apartment is very inviting and practical. It is an open design with a corridor kitchen open toward the living room that leads to the open air terrace. The kitchen is well equipped and contained most all supplies and condiments that are usually not found in rentals. The living room furniture was roomy and comfortable. A much appreciated plus was the large beach umbrella, beach chairs and boggy boards available for our use.

Lots of stairs

Although the location is great and the property owners are wonderful. I feel that it should be disclosed that there is no elevator and there are 4 flights of stairs you carry your luggage up after a good distance walk from the car. As an RN perhaps I just think about this from a health stand point of someone that is not physically up to this. Also the 2nd bedroom being a loft situation is VERY HOT and really needs to have some type of free standing AC placed up there; the box fan along with the ceiling fan doesn't compensate for the heat that rises upstairs. I may also add there is another flight of stairs in the condo that you get to carry your luggage up to to the master bedroom.
